My son is new to this cub scout pack but they're anxiously awaiting my cake for their Blue & Gold banquet in Feb because they saw my cake book (and DH sings my praises, what a sweetie). icon_smile.gif

Anyhow, we're going to DC in April, as a Pack, so I thought about doing the Capitol Building and some of the surrounding grounds with cherry trees and maybe some of those tiny street lamps you can get at Michaels this time of year for the Christmas villages. So far, this is my favorite idea but looking at pics of the Capitol Building I'm feeling like that's a very daunting task.

The theme that month is ABC's of America. So I thought about doing a cake with some American landmarks and scouts at those landmarks...not sure how to pull that off, and it started seeming like alot to put on a cake...

My original thought before all the American stuff came in the picture was to do a stacked cake with outdoorsy, camping stuff and the pack logo, or something like that. But I just wanted this to be something special for them, so that's why I thought about incorporating the America part of it.

Someone else mentioned doing the United States and putting flags at the locations of the landmarks, but that's more of a sheet cake idea and I don't care too much for sheet cakes (no offense to sheet cake lovers).

So, I'm hoping you creative cake lovers can throw your ideas out there. I've been asking everyone and racking my brain...

Thanks in advance! icon_smile.gif

I remember long ago when my brother was in scouting, my mom did a cake for their blue and gold banquet with the same theme...she carved the flur de leaf ( I know i didnt spell that right) and then took some of the buildings we had from the game of life and placed them on the board with writing under it as to what it was and if there was a scouting event that happened there. I dont have any pics of it and it was 20 some years ago.

Othwise maybe you could do a map of the USA...there are several huge things that happen all over the country for scouting... off the top of my head, there's a Jamboree ( I think it's held in a different place every so many years.) Then in New Mexico there is a huge mountain that they climb. ( I remember my brother doing that)

HTH and Good luck!

Hi, sorry I JUST found this post by accident.

I'm currently making the cakes for the Blue & Gold. I'll have them finished tomorrow.

It's pretty elaborate. I ditched the "ABC's of America" theme and just went with the scouting theme. I'm making 2 mountains. One mountain is cubs and the other is boys. On the cubs mountain I made a bear, wolf, tiger, and bobcat out of fondant. They're sitting by the fire, roasting marshmallows. I have tents and a path winding around the mountain. On the boys mountain instead of a path there's a river winding around the mountain. I have 3 boys in a canoe and one boy sitting by a big bonfire, roasting a marshallow (but his is on fire because he's watching the Webelos who are bridging over). The Webelos are on a bridge I made of wooden dowels. All the boys (including Webelos) are made of fondant. The Webelos, since they need to stand on the bridge, have wire frames inside them. They're hamming it up as they cross the bridge (kind of showing the personality of each of the boys we have bridging over).

I worked on the fondant figures yesterday for 9.5 hours straight. Actually that time includes the time it took to make the bridge, too. I'll post pics when it's done. It's going to be HUGE. LOL

But, we have 100+ people expected and it's not just for them, it's for my son, too. So, I want it to be great.

Thanks. I'm finishing it tomorrow but it won't be fully assembled until Monday night when I deliver it. I'll post pics as soon as I can. I'm having alot of fun with this one. It's going to be WAY more cake than they need but it's just one of those ideas that kept getting more elaborate as I went along...I do that alot. LOL

WHEW! It's done! Just got back from the banquet and I couldn't wait to post my pic. I'm pretty happy with it. I saw alot I would have done differently, but it was a huge hit at the banquet, so I guess I can't feel too bad about it. LOL icon_smile.gif

Wow! What a terrific B&G cake! What was the reaction at the banquet? I foresee many calls in your future..."Can you do...?"

I can't help but wonder what your Eagle Court of Honor cake will look like (never to early to think about the cake, right? icon_rolleyes.gif )

Funny you should mention that...the Pack Leader's wife came up to me and said both of her boys are getting their Eagle Scout this March and she needs a cake. I guess I'm going to have to do some research. My knowledge of scouts hasn't extended that far yet! LOL

I'm just starting on the fondant pieces for the cake for our Blue & Gold which is on March 7. This is just for the Cub side of our pack and we're at 220 attendees. My husband is one of the den leaders for the Tigers and we have a total of 71 in the Cub Pack. At this point we're at wedding cake size and I'm getting a bit nervous since this will be the biggest that I've done. But my Mom decorated hundreds of cakes as I was growing up and she is helping me as much as she can at 73 years old. I'm actually doing a pedestal cake with a 14, 12, 10 and 8 inch and each cake will be on it's own pedestal and placed so that it will "spiral" up. On each layer I'm making little easels with the Cub Motto, Do your Best and the Core Values. Then there will be an semi circle "wall of Cub" behind the easels with the 14" being the Tigers names, then one for Wolves, Bears and the top 8" will be the Webelos. Around the sides of each will be Flor de Lis in gold with white and blue rope upper and lower boarders. Then I will also be making 3 half sheets that will be ghost scored with Flor de Lis alternated in blue and gold on each piece and again the blue and white rope boarders. My husband is making the pedestals from large wood dowels with bases on the top and bottom to make them sturdy and the last detail if I can get them done as well and make it look right will be balsa wood ladders that will connect the cakes. Hoping it all turns out, I'm a week behind my schedule on getting the fondant done since my youngest just had his tonsils out on Tuesday so this weekend will be a busy one! I'll post a pic next weekend after the banquet.

Wow! I hope you come back and post a picture (or 2 or 3) icon_smile.gif

I see that was your first post. Welcome to CC (Cake Central)! I'd love to see your cake because I have to do another one next year, and I'd love some new ideas. (look, I'm already thinking about next year's cake) LOL

I hear you about being behind schedule. I wondered if I'd ever get it done, but it all worked out at the end. There were more trees that I would have liked to have had around my cake, etc, but people really didn't notice the things that I thought were "wrong" with my cake. Get your important pieces done and you'll be fine. icon_smile.gif

The cake I made was the biggest I'd ever done, too. I just took it one step at a time. I carried each cake in it's own box to the banquet and showed up 2 hrs early. I had as much done for each cake as I could, prior to stacking. So, all I had to do was stack them, put the fondant pieces on them, and finish piping last minute stuff. My husband actually piped some stuff for me, too (I was feeling pressed for time at the end of the setup).

And one word of "advice" that came to mind as I was reading yours was, if it's going to be a pedestal cake, make sure it's level and make sure the table is not wobbly. I did a non-pedestal cake once and it was on a wobbly table at a place that had a floor like a trampolene. Kids kept running by and you could watch the table bounce everytime they did. You're going to have alot of kids there, so I would check those kinds of things.

Good luck! I can't wait to see the pics. icon_smile.gif

Just a thought, but perhaps you could work in something related to their Eagle project. Your B&G cake looks great, by the way. icon_smile.gif
