Saturday, when I got home from cake class, DH told me that my friend had called asking if I could do a last minute cake for a little girl who just lost her father, as her mother was, as I'm sure most of us would be, deep in depression. Anyway, I called my friend and left a message on the machine... you know, what does she like, how old, etc.... No return call. At church the next day, I saw my friend, who apologized for not calling back, and she gave me the details. Well, I had a cake in the freezer, so baking wasn't a problem. I had plenty of icing already made up due to my class, so that wouldn't be a problem. I asked her when she wanted it and she said this afternoon, once again, no problem. I tell her okay, I'll do the cake.
This morning, the phone rings and her kids are here for the morning (I watch her kids between the time her babysitter goes to work and my friend gets home from work), I get up and start to work on the cake. Nothing fancy, just pink and purple girly stuff. Anyway, my friend calls to let me know she's home and I tell her that the cake is done but I need to get a cake box because the cake is too tall for my carrier, so she can come and get it this afternoon and she said she'd be here by one. It is now seven p.m. and guess what I still have on my kitchen table? Did you say to yourself a pink and purple cake? Uh huh, that's right!
So not only did I waste the time I needed to practice making my roses for class, but my cake for the final class next Saturday is now wasted, and I have a cake that more than likely won't be eaten as we haven't eaten all of the cake from Sataurday.
Here's my lesson learned..... from this particular friend, whom I love dearly, I will no longer be taking orders unless paid for in advance.
