Ok so my niece has asked me to help her make a volcano cake for extra credit for one of her school classes .. it doesn't need to be anything spectacular, just the shape of a volcano and to be able to serve 35 kids. I was wondering what size rounds I should start with to be able to get 35 servings, yet still be manageable enough for her to carry to class, but also to look like a volcano? Thanks for any help/ideas.

Hi! I've made a volcano years ago, using the "wonder mold" pan (for doll dresses) - it serves about 20 I think, so I would put a another round under it. If you don't have that pan, I would stack the 10, 8 & 6" rounds (or the 9/8/6 if you have a 9"), and just add a little frosting inbetween layers to stick them together (don't tort the cakes, but do level the tops)... After sticking them together, cut-away the edges to make into a mountain shape - it doesn't have to be perfect, because mountains/volcano's aren't perfect. When I did mine, I made it chocolate & covered it in milk chocolate frosting, added a bunch of plastic palm trees & candy rocks, and then poured red/orange icing from the top & let it glob down wherever it wanted. It turned-out pretty good for a beginner cake for me, and I can try to find a picture if you e-mail me directly at [email protected] - but I can't promise I can find it. I think it's on my old computer & everything....... and definitely e-mail me directly if you have any questions about what I said here. One change I would make if I did another one, would be to make the very top more "column like" instead of as rounded as I had it. I hadn't looked-up a picture of a volcano & I would now opt to make a very distinct volcano shape - but the "mountain look" is good too! Good luck & I hope you guys have FUN!! =)

thank you for the reply .. I do not have that pan so I would need to stack rounds .. do you think I should do double layers of 10, 8, and 6 to get 35 servings? And I should not torte these cakes? Thanks again!

My records indicate that 2 10" rounds = 35 slices on it's own. So, I think if you did 1 of each, you'd be fine........ however, I think you should stack the pans to make sure the volcano will be tall enough. Maybe you will want 2 10's, then an 8 & a 6....... or maybe 2 10's & 2 8's will be enough, (which would equal 59 slices before carving at it)... I'm sure they will be fine with left overs! (or do one 10, two 8's & two 6's?) - just play with the pans to get a visual. ..... two 8's & three 6's might look cool, but maybe be kind of small........... good luck!
