I'm making my nephews 4th birthday cake, his birthday is on Christmas Eve and is ALWAYS overshadowed or forgotten...sadly...my SIL said they haven't ever really celebrated his birthday.

Since he's never had a birthday i'm trying not to make it a Christmas themed cake (decorations) its going to be all about him. What i do want to do though is try and make Christmas'y flavored cake and filling combination's. Any ideas? I was thinking

-Chocolate cake with mini chocolate chips and crushed peppermint candy canes mixed in the batter with a White Chocolate peppermint buttercream filling.

-Caramel cake with toffee bits and an apple pie filling

That's all i've got so far. I want to try and incorporate favorite Christmas goodies into cake flavors like turtles, peanut brittle etc.

So, Let me have it! Any ideas?

i make a vanilla-cinnamon ladyfinger cake, fill it with a caramel bavarian and frost it with a spiked (usually bourbon) buttercream......YUMMY!

for the kiddies obviously omit the bourbon but i highly recommend trying it with it for the adults sometime

Egg Nog Poundcake, with rum extract and Nutmeg? Not sure if this is appropriate for kids, though!

How about gingerbread?

I think the chocolate cake with the crushed candy canes is your best bet for a child's cake. Sounds great!

Actually my friend's son LOVES eggnog and I'm going to try the eggnog cake recipe (CC recipe) . He's turning 10. His dad told me that the other day he saw eggnog in the store and tears of joy were in his eyes...LOL

Although most kids seem to like chocolate,so the candy candy ideas with that sound great.

Or you could do something as simple as chocolate or white cake and serve it with a premium peppermint ice cream.

I think of apples as a fall flavor. I love the idea of gingerbread and egg nog for Christmas. You could pair up the candy cane with the gingerbread and maybe a candy coffee crunch with the egg nog.

I'm thinking exactly like GI is. He's 14.......I would ask him what his favorite cake is, have one of his friends ask him so he doesn't know. At that age they have their dislikes and likes for sure. Go from there. Good luck!

Any cake roll done up like a buche de noel... I did a pumpkin cake roll for Halloween.

Just saw a recipe for a chocolate rum raspberry cake roll. I think that will be my Christmas cake.

Maybe there is an egg nog flavor cake... Might be spice though.

I think the OP said her nephew was 4. That's why I suggested more little-kid type cakes with little kid flavors. Sheesh, that would be embarrassing for the Mom if she had never thrown her 14 yr/o kid a birthday! Perhaps even if they did a 2-hr mini party at the kid's house in the afternoon.

shoot, she could even tempt the other kid's parents with "give yourself a 2-hr break" by dumping your kid off at my house!

My personal favorite is dark chocolate cake w/ peppermint buttercream. If you don't like the idea of peppermint buttercream, mint oreos crushed up in buttercream & used as a filling or to ice the whole thing. I too like pumpkin cake w/ a maple cream cheese frosting

Thanks for all the ideas, and he's going to be 4 not 14. Im making a 2 tier topsy turvey cake and its going to be the only desert there and people are complaining about having cake on Christmas eve. "Who eats cake on Christmas eve" blah blah blah....I was planning on doing all chocolate cake with oreo filling

I saw a recipe in Bon Appetit Magazine for Devils food cake with peppermint frosting that looked amazing! It was featured on the cover. It is a layer cake with dark chocolate ganache and white chocolate filling between layers of devil's food cake. then the whole thing is iced in peppermint frosting.

I havent tried this recipe, but I'm planning on making it for Christmas Eve! The recipe is very long, but if you're interested, PM me and I'll type it up for you. Or else you could pick up the December issue!

I'm going crazy over here!! I had a recipe for an Orange cake with a Cranberry filling that I wanted to try, but I misplaced it. It sounded really yummy!

Short answer... Most kids that I know like yellow cake with chocolate filling...lol I'm with the folks who say use NOTHING related to Christmas. My sister's B-day is December 22nd, and my Mom Always made sure that there was a special event just for her birthday.

BTW, if you want it covertly Christmasy just cover the chocolate cake in MMF and tell them it's a hot cocoa cake!! Yummy.

He's a lucky boy to have such a great aunt! Can't wait to see the pics.

bprwatson, chocolate cake with Oreo filling sounds great to me, I made chocolate cupcakes with oreo/buttercream icing a couple of weeks ago and they were a big hit with all ages!

I don't think it will be too hard, i'm just going to make it a topsy turvey and then since there will be a lot of people there i'm going to make a bunch of cupcakes as well. My MIL actually had the nerve to ask me if i'd make pies or a dessert tray as well since no one wants to eat cake on christmas eve.
