Jenn- Just to give you an idea... although i'm sure you really don't want to know, lol. We have two 1 ton chevy trucks at work, also 2 tanks. Last time I filled one up it was a little less than 1/4 of a tank. I personally filled it up about 1.5 weeks ago-2 weeks and it cost over 90 dollars!!! I am soo glad i don't have to pay the bills! also thankfully it is our slow season at the moment so we don't have to travel much for work, hopefully when we pick up more work the gas prices will have gone down.

We can dream can't we?

I'm going to tell my age...but....

Does anyone remember the late 70's, the gas crunch, long lines at the gas pumps, WHEN you could get gas?(I actually made some money off the guys my Dad worked with, just to sit in their trucks in the long lines and fill them up for them, I was 16 and desperately wanting money). That's when prices went all the way up to $1.00 and little more, from .39 cents or so. People back then were driving big vans, big trucks and big station wagons. Everyone just prior to the gas crunch was buying big cars, then, the car makers came out with little cars and everyone was getting those, and trying desperately to get rid of the gas guzzlers....

Everything cycles every 25 years or so? I think we're there, guess we'll all be getting rid of our SUV's and trucks and going back to the 4 door small sedans...

I work for an oil refinery...and I'm still shocked at the prices, but not so much as I was this spring...DH and I went on a Western Carribbean cruise, first stop, Belize (very much like a 3rd world country). If they had a car, they were paying $4.50 a gallon, back then! Ouch! (They didn't even have a fast food restaurant in their capital city! No BK, Mickey D's, nothing like that. icon_rolleyes.gif

I live in Central Illinois and I filled up after work today.........$2.75 a gallon!!! THIS IS CRAZY!!! I commute from a small farming community to the city for work...I have to fill up at least twice a week. I've been spending at least $250 a month on gas, I hate to think what I'll be spending now that the prices keep going up, up, up!!

Loree - my dad owned a gas station in the late 70's in a small town. He had to figure out how much gas he had in the tanks and how many cars he could serve. He used to pay my friends and me to sit on the back of his pickup truck at the end of the line with a sign saying "no more gas today". We sure got an education that summer!! icon_surprised.gif People were not nice and we were only 9 or 10.

Actually, JennT, diesel around here costs MORE than unleaded! I bought a diesel volkswagen last year (after I got rid of an Expedition) for the added perk of great gas mileage and low cost. My main reason was because diesel has a higher flash point than gasoline - after DH's pickup exploded in our driveway I became a little paranoid. Yesterday I paid $2.99 a gallon for diesel!! Up from 2.29 the same time last year. It's very discouraging.

Welcome to Southern California , San Diego to be exact, we have the "honor" of having the highest gas prices in the nation. $2.79 a gallon and climbing. I drive a big Chevy SUV, can't afford to go to work anymore!!. Will have to sell the car to pay for the gas, LOL

This high gas price is hitting everyone! I wanted to trade my minivan in for a SUV but not anymore! I have 5 more payments on my van & I think I'll just keep it!! It goes around 400 miles on one tank of gas so I'll keep it!! No SUV for me!

Loree001, thanks for that story!! That was interesting! My dad was stationed in Holland during the late 70's. We didn't get to see any of that news then. We didn't have English tv then.

I can't believe the prices might be over $3 by Labor Day!!! I am fixing to get my CDL license so I can drive a school bus. It might be better just to stay home & start raising cows & chickens like JennT said!! I know how to do that & raise a garden. That's what we all need to do!! LOL!! I'm scared to death of chickens but love fresh eggs!!!!

beachcakes...I remember well my dad with us kids in the car sitting in the long line of cars waiting for gas when the owner of the station brought out his lawn chair, sat down and ate his lunch right in front of us instead of pumping gas tapedshut.gif ~needless to say my dad was livid along with all the others in line! (that was in Oregon where you don't pump your own gas)
Here the price is $2.77, really $2.77 & 9/10 so you could say it's $2.78 a gallon at Texaco, but it keeps going up thumbsdown.gificon_cry.gif and I drive less!

Here in Lexington...Tennessee, that is...gas is around $2.43/gallon as off tonight. I was on a half of a tank last week when it was about .10 cheaper and it still cost me $21 to fill up - from a half a tank mind you. I'll have to fill up again tomorrow and I'm dreading it.

You know what is sickening? We are not only paying higher gas prices to fill our vehicles...we are paying higher prices for everything else too, cause companies are raising their prices DUE to the increase in the cost of oil.

I had a miscellaneous charge on my recent garbage pick up bill. When I called to ask what it was for, the lady said that it was a price adjustment to offset the increase in gas prices. The same thing happened at my work last year...the vending machine prices increased and I asked the vendor why and he said since gas had increased, they had to increase the prices.

SO, we consumers are paying DOUBLE for alot of things!!! Maybe you ladies that have DH's who have their own business should consider this. ??? I know it is not an ideal solution, but you might HAVE to make some sort of adjustment.

Tonight on the news they said gas prices may taper off in Sept. So, hopefully after Labor day, they will start to drop.

UGH!!

Well, you guys are making me feel a lot better. Our gas prices are pretty comparable to everyones, it's about $2.60 at costco and about 2.80-2.90 at other places. But I feel pretty lucky. We moved to hawaii in September of last year and were told that the gas prices would kill us. So considering that we're way out in the middle of the ocean, I guess our prices aren't too bad.

Yesterday dh filled up his truck for $2.60 per gallon at the 7/11. When I was going to the pharmacy, I saw it for $2.80.

Now--as I live in the Detroit area--you can well imagine what this is doing/going to do to the already shaky economy here in Michigan. Literally, I am terrified to think what the next few years will be like.

We are getting rid of my Jeep soon and I was almost sure that I was going to get a Durange. However, at the price of gas these days--I may just end up with (GASP!!) another van! ARGH!! I need something with 7-passenger seating, so my options are limited.

DH and I are also considering getting rid of his truck and getting a diesel. Yes, the price of diesel is about the same---but they get better mileage and the motors last WAY longer (at least this is what dh tells me!).

I'm just SO thankful that dh's new job is now in automotive.

Hi all, haven't been here in a couple of days, looks like we are all paying through the "hose", sorry, couldn't resist. At the Texaco/Shell station out my back window the gas is $2.59.9, and according to the news this morning that is a little cheaper than in some other areas of Dallas/Ft Worth.

All this makes me feel better about not being able to be out and about too much, saves a lot on gas! Janice

There's a Costco wholesale by me and their gas( yesterday) is $2.43 a gallon some service stations here are from $2.49- $2.60 a gallon
and i live in the southern U.S.
I remember when $10 bucks used to fill a tank,Now I know you said It had nothing to do with the price of cakes, but I have had to raise the price of my cakes because the price of certain items went up like milk, eggs, sugar and other implements I use for cake baking like the oil etc. So yes the cost of gas does affect us even if it's ever so slight because we have to deliver those cakes as well.

Yes gas prices are just ridiculous!!! You know that I checked out driving schools for my son and they said that if I enroll him now it will cost me 356.00 paid in full.. If I wait 2 weeks from now because of gas prices the price will vary from 380.00 - 400.00.. icon_eek.gif
LOL I asked my son what did he think if I bought him a bike.. He rolled his eyes and walked away.. KIDS they just don't understand!!.. That's not all, the vehicle we have decided to give him is a partially restored 1972 chevy truck. I bought the truck about 6yrs. ago and my DH restored a bit. It just sits there because we wanted to save it for one of my kids. BUT when he restored it a few years ago he added a bigger tank. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif
gas here right now is around 2.59 a gallon.. That's reg. unleaded..Our cadillacs take only Unleaded Plus.. icon_cry.gif

Scared to death because I have to get gas today icon_cry.gif . I have a Villager Van and I know it will probablly be about $40-45.00 to fill up now.

Okay, I know this is not going to be a popular opinion and I'm not going to make a lot of friends saying this, but I think that we Americans (including myself) are just plain spoiled! People in most other countries pay a lot more for gas than we can even relate to but you know what, they also find alternative means of transportation such as walking (oh, the horror!), biking, and using public transportation. I know so many people that refuse to resort to any of these means or even carpool because the "need" their car during the day (and most of these people never leave the office during the day, but "just in case"). Maybe higher gas prices will cause us to stop wasting so much gas. And, as a side benefit it would give us cleaner air and be so much better for the environment. That's my soap box for the day! icon_rolleyes.gif

Of course, there are many people that need SUV's for practical reasons and don't have many options for other transportation so I totally feel for those people. It is hard on the budget.

We do pay less for gas than most countries, that's true, but we're also set up less efficiently as well. Most areas of the US (aside from major cities) were not designed with economy in mind, and many people don't live close enough to walk or cycle (even to the shops) and have little or no access to public transportation.

I live 24 miles from my job and have to be there at 5am, so public transportation is not a possibility for me. I used to cycle to work every day when I worked a couple of miles away (which I'd like to point out can be a harrowing thing, you're taking your life in your hands on most US roads icon_eek.gif ), but now I don't have that option, and unfortunately neither do the majority of people in the US. Those in cities who do take advantage of public transport are usually only saving money because the government helps to subsidize the cost, although you're right that it's better for the environment.

I do agree that more people should carpool, as this would help save money and the environment.

BTW, gas around here is about $2.50, pretty average!

Hi Everyone,
I'm in T.O and our gas right now is at $1.02 a litre which is over $4 a gallon. It really sucks!!! My fiance's sister owns a cottage that's about an hour and a half away from us and we used to go up there all the time. Now that gas is so high we can't go and enjoy ourselves as much because it really starts to take it's toll on our bank account. I guess it wouldn't be so bad if we weren't saving up to get married and buy a house!!!!!! Hopefully it'll decrease but I really doubt that very much!!
