I've always used a ziploc bag and tinted with whatever coloring I have. Put the coconut in the baggie and add a few drops ofcolor, kneading it in until it's the color I want. Spread some piping gel or buttercream onto the board and pat it in place. Use the bag or some kind of covering on your "patting hand" so it doesn't absorb the color.

I've never done it but I would think food coloring would be less messy. Let me know what you find out though!!!!

To color it: Place a drop or two of liquid in a jar; add coconut and shake, rattle and roll! icon_smile.gif
To make it stick, lightly ice the cake/board then quickly sprinkle on the coconut.

I just use regular food coloring. I like to put it in one of those disposable tupperware like containers and shake it. It helps keep the coconut from clumping while you color it. Just add the food color 1/4 teaspoon at a time until you get the color or coverage you want. I would coat the board with a light layer of Karo applied with a pastry brush and then sprinkle the coconut on top of that.

Good luck with your cake.

when i need to color coconut i just put the coconut in a zip bag with a small amout of gel food coloring and knead it until the color is evenly distributed and i usually just start out will a small amount of color and add little by little until i reach the color i need.

I haven't done this in years, but when I did do it (before I really got "into" cake decorating and began doing research, learning proper techniques, etc.) I used to add some drops of liquid food coloring into my coconut and stir it with a spoon. I did this a few drops at a time until I got my desired color.

To stick it to the surface, I put down a layer of frosting and then sprinkled the colored coconut on. Next I gently pressed the coconut into the frosting so it would adhere better.
