Mermaid doll cake w/ wonder mold

I have a request for a mermaid doll cake for a little girl's birthday (presumably using the wonder mold, but im not opposed to other options if there are other options, lol). the mom brought me a mermaid doll to use....but how do i use the doll with the mermaid tail? is it even possible? it is the barbie splash and style mermaid - http://www.amazon.com/BARBIE-Splash-Style-Mermaid-Dolphin/dp/B0015ET6GE

i've been browsing the gallery all day. i'm thinking i might just ask the mom if i can put the doll on the outside instead of the inside? would that work? and if so...how would i secure it? would it work better on a round/square/sheet cake instead of something rounded like the wonder mold?

If you are using the wonder mold could you cut the tail off the barbie doll and then stick it in the back to look like it's coming out of the skirt part of the dress or does she want to save the doll for the birthday girl? icon_surprised.gificon_biggrin.gif

The doll is for the birthday girl. I can't imagine a mermaid without a tail would go over very well for a 3 year old, lol.

Well that wouldn't be good would it. icon_lol.gif Could you make a mermaid tail using fondant or gumpaste?

Yes, but my question is more along the lines of is it possible to put the doll, with the tail, inside the cake, so that I'd have the opportunity to do the mermaid tail...and if so, how do I get it inside the cake with the tail?

If not, how do I attach the doll to the cake on the outside?

I have not done it myself but I do remember reading where someone used a regular barbie doll in a wonder mold. They covered the doll with saran wrap. I do not recall if they pushed her in or first made a well. Personally, I would use the cake core tool that comes with the Wilton tall tier stand. It works great. I hope this idea helps.

Yes - but the doll the mom provided is a mermaid doll. With a mermaid tail. Is it possible to put the doll inside the cake since it has a tail? I linked to a picture of the doll in my op.

This is one time I would use a doll pick - just from the waist up and create the tail outside/on the cake.
Other than that, you best idea would be to make a scene w/a 'rock'(cake) that she is sitting on.

Have to use the doll the mom gave me....I am guessing putting it into the wonder mold isn't going to work out.
Any suggestions for attaching it to the cake? Would it be easier for a sheet cake vs. the wonder mold?

You can use a full Barbie with the Wondermold pan. But you need an 8" layer below to accomodate the whole doll. I searched Doll Cake in the forums to see about wrapping and putting a doll inside. I PM'd several people and they helped me a TON with my first Cinderella Barbie cake.

*But* looking at the mermaid Barbie - she's so very pretty, but not sure about getting that tail inside the cake without a pretty large core!

I think the real Barbies are prettier than the picks, so all I can think of is to (gasp) take off the head, swap it with the head on a doll pick and make the mermaid cake in the Wilton directions. Then without the little one seeing, replace the head on the still beautiful and clean Barbie bottom to use as a gift.

I agree, you will have to use a layer under the wondermold for it to be tall enough to accommodate the Barbie with the tail....but you should be able to push it right into the cake. I did a Barbie cake and was nervous about putting the doll into the cake, but I just cored the cake two inches down and about 1-1/2 inches across right in the center to accommodate the doll's body (I was worried I would crack the cake apart without coring it) and then pushed it right in and it worked perfect. Here is a picture of the cake. And the little girl is definitely going to want to see the entire barbie/mermaid come out of that cake, not a pick. I haven't done one with a tail, but I don't think it would be much different.

I did a mermaid cake pretty recently and used a barbie ariel. I just wrapped the legs in saran wrap, made the tale out of fondant and pushed the legs directly down the middle. I don't think it would be much different with this doll. the fondant tail seems to secure the doll in place. You do have to make an eight inch for the height to place under the wonder mold cake.

My daughter has that doll and I personally think that tail is much too big to be put into the wondermold cake......I'm certain it would crack the cake. That's a big thick tail. Is the Mom insistent that her tail be piped? I would just use the wondermold as a base to set the doll onto, then decorate with an "under the sea" kind of theme and I bet she'd be thrilled with it. Can you call her and ask? It IS fun to do the tail in bc though, but I just don't think you'd get her in without ruining the cake......

I'm sorry, I was wrong. I double checked the link you provided and that is NOT the doll we have. Her tail actually doesn't look much bigger than if she just had legs, so maybe she would work after all.....? I guess you could always test it out first to see, and enjoy eating the test results! I just finished this cake icon_smile.gif The bottom fin part of the tail on the doll actually is removable, so my problem was solved icon_smile.gif I just wrapped the doll and put it in the cake without the fin part. It worked fine icon_smile.gif Thanks for all the advice!
