How Do I Decorate The Cake Platter?

I'm making a cake for a baby shower in two weeks for our pastor's wife. It will be a very simple, round, 3-tier cake done with chocolate fondant and aqua blue/brown accents -- nothing cutesy...she is more into simple and elegant.
Can someone please share with me how to decorate a cake platter? I've never been successful in doing this (I'm a hobbyist -- nowhere NEAR professional!) Do I use fabric? Something else? How do I get it to lay nicely and attach it underneath the board? Do I decorate my cake somewhere else first and then try to get it onto the decorated board? Or do I decorate the board first, put the cake on it, and stick some wax paper all around the edges to keep stuff from getting on the decorated board?
Thanks in advance!
i usually use fondant to decorate the cake board. what i do is cover the board a couple of days ahead of time so that it has time to set up, then i make the cake and transfer to the board, not hard to do, as long as you make that cake on another board the same size as the cake.
I cover mine with whatever will look the best. I just used brown satin for my sisters bridal shower. Cover it like a package. I used hot glue to stick it and then trimmed it with a flat ribbon. Not like anyone was going to see it , but I knew!!
