well, trying to convince people that a child's level decorating job is worth $500 kinda turns me off.

That's a start as to why she's annoying.

What I want to ask is why so many people feel that the info she's been trained as a chef is supposed to impress us? I think it's pretty clear that she doesn't use the training she's had in her show.

I suspect that the reason she always makes a drink is so she can manage to eat her food.

Her recipes save me lots of time and her tablescapes give me lots of ideas for parties.

Although I'm not a fan of the cake in this video, I still don't loathe her the way so many other people do. I just don't get. What am I missing?

the beauty of the good ole USA!!!!!!!! usaribbon.gif ...you can love who ya want for whatever reason you want. rock on!!!!!

as much as i love this site, sometimes there can be a mob mentality, cause we all want so badly to support the original poster...alot of times, though, the "opposer" gets bashed in the process. this isn't really leveled at any particular person in this thread, mind you, but just a feeling i get from the overall site. thumbs_up.gif

I'm not really a Sandra Lee fan, but just because she's known for semi-homemade does not mean she doesn't know her sh!t. She's a trained chef and developed the semi-homemade concept for the average person who doesn't like or feels they can't or doesn't have time to cook from scratch. And before we cast stones at the semi-homemade concept, lest we forget that the majority of folks on here are "semi-homemade" bakers themselves (doctored cake mix, anyone?).

Now, that said, that cake looks like a three year old decorated it! lol OY... but for someone with no decorating skills, on a budget, the idea isn't bad... but the execution could be better.

$20 says that if a photo of that cake had been posted by a member here, there would be 20 comments saying "great job!" Lol!

I don't particularly like Sandra, and the two of her recipes that I tried were horrible (country gravy and candy cane cookies) - however, this reminds me of how my ex used to hate Jeff Gordon. He would call him names and proclaim that he was a lousy driver (and it was his team or car that made winning at all possible for him). Jealous much? I may not care for Sandra's style or recipes, but I sure as heck wouldn't mind trading places with her!

Yah.....mmmmm.......okay........I'm not sure what to say about that except that looks like something onf of my kids would do. It's cute if a kid made it, but she went over board with $500 cake.....Yah.......

Ha! That was hilarious! Can you imagine selling that thing for $500? Not one of the cakes I have made have reached that amount yet, and they are a heck of a lot better than those two cake stacked up with tacky cookies.

I don't like her either, but one time I saw her do something similar with whipped frosting and sea horse shaped cookies that actually looked pretty. But that cake was just craptacular.

Okay, debi! Don't knock MY family's Easter Tradition! LOL Really, my cousin makes the 2 circle bunny cake. Actually, I MAKE her make it because it's been a tradition with my family for years!

Now don't hurt me..I'm only voicing my opinion.
I think the cake was fun and something the average mom could accomplish with 2 five year olds hanging off the table wanting to help.
A lot of people were raised on box cake and Walmart frosting, and think that's how it's supposed to taste (chemically). Try passing off a scratch cake that's got a heavier texture, and a lot of people will just say it's dry..
And yes everyone thinks cake decorating is just soo easy--until they try it and nothing looks as planned.
I like Sandra Lee and I'm proud to say it. Her ideas are at least a lot more realistic than Martha's--and some of the cakes that Martha has made don't look that much better than SL's

Lol..funniest thread I have read in a long time. I love Sandra lee.. but uhm...that one....NOT!!!!! I wouldnt pay $500 for it, not even a $100.. I can make that cake look like $500 but not using that! Now, i would pay the $500 if Mario brings it to me and shakes his assets just like in dancing with the stars, I'll take that for a spin!

I am a grocery store decorator right now, and also have a position in a real cakery.

My grocery store clients like the frozen cakes. ( mine are not 6 months frozen I watch the dates on the box they come in, and only put them in the case for 30 days)
Are they better than the cakes at my other job? nooo way!!!

fresh is always better, but some people never have had the opertunity (sp) to taste good food.

I had a brides mother come in on the day of the wedding and want a cake ! ( at he grocery store) She wanted a 1/4 sheet with an 1/8 sheet on top. Just base iced and she would put fall leaves on it. Sure I did it. and it was beautiful. Very semi homeade.

Just nor done by an over active former teen idol. made He has held up!

I agree to this, but I can't say it looks like a $500 dollar cake..that's a little bit too much.. But definitvely I think for those who cant afford custom made cakes is an option, or for those who want the semi homemade look.

Oh and while yes I agree that the was it was presented in that video was atrocious, some high end decorators do get a LOT of money for buttercream cakes decorated with cookies (of course they are baking the cakes and cookies from scratch and decorating them, not store-bought), but like I said, if someone DID want to do a cake like this in a better way than SL did it, it could actually turn out really cute, even using store-bought cookies and such. She just made a mess of rushing through it.

check out www.flourpatchbakery.com for one example of a high end bakery that ONLY works in cookies-on-cake decorating (again, NOT saying that the MESS SL showed there was anything like this, but it shows that the idea is not without merit).

Unless she went to LCB in Paris it doesn't carry any weight. By seeing her shows she sure hasn't used any of that knowledge she learned.

My whole thing is more with Food network than her personally. Outside of the Iron Chefs, Alton, and Emeril, who actually can cook on that network? I do realize it is geared to someone with minimal cooking skills, and they do need to fill airspace, but c'mon. They could at least bring back Sarah Moulton, and the two fat ladies. LOLOL

Yeah I rarely watch FN anymore... it's lost a lot along the way. Everyone wants to be a "celebrity chef" instead of just being a chef who just happens to be a celebrity, and because of that the focus has been taken off of the food!

I think the premise of the cake is okay. I think she presented it all wrong. If she had presented the cake as something quick and easy to do for a kid's party or if you are running short on time, it would be great!

Really, if someone who doesn't bake needed something to take to school or to a potluck and had no time or inclination to bake...this would be cute. I'm guessing having 1 minute to make it happen doesn't help the cuteness factor.

However, presenting it as something that is just as good as a professionally designed $500 cake is pushing it. I can't picture even the most clueless home cook buying into the $500 cake idea. Let's add it up. 1/2 sheet cake $35, 10" round $20, 6 cupcakes at least $12 but probably more, a dozen decorated cookies..at least $24. So, we have a $158 cake for $40. :p

I agree about the chefs on FN....

Personally i think FN should be cake challenges all day everyday...

And should include
Mike McCary- Mike's Amazing Cakes
Bronwen Weber- Frosted Art
Uhh that cute girl who made the jumbo sock monkey

I wanna see a buttercream cake challenge....... only using bc. No fondant. no gumpaste.

I havent watched FN in so long and when I tried to tune in I had no clue who half the people were.
I use to watch Sandra Lee and some of her stuff is ok but for the most part her "semi-homemade" is a load of crap. Her cream of crab soup was opening up a can of already made soup and adding extra crapmeat to it. Ghee, now why didnt I think of that? I could have my own show!! Duh! And I guess adding milk and butter to canned tomato soup is a new thing too!
I dont care how many cookies she added to that cake, I dont know anyone who would pay that. If I did I would be rich! And no matter what she added to it, its still going to taste like crap also!

What I love is how she talks about how she "developed" or "invented" the semi-homemade concept. No, you didn't develop OR invent it--it's how millions of people cook for their families every day... she was just smart enough to market it and make a boatload of money off of it!

I agree with you. I like her, not love her, but I have used a few of her semi-home made ideas. At least her stuff is more realistic to the person that has no time to "Whip together" a Martha Stewart looking party.
Yea, her cake looked like crap, but I remember making one very similar for my daughters second birthday.

The funniest part for me was when Mario wanted to put on the "Walmart" smiley face, and SL takes it away from him. lol

And did you notice how Mario would not say the cake was worth $500. Instead he opted for saying "priceless". Thats right.
