Ahem....maybe I'm wrong here, but I rewatched the video clip again, and I think that whole $500 thing was just her exaggerating. She didn't really mean $500 as in the sense of five-hundred-dollars. I interpret her $500 comment as meaning when you get done with this cake, it will look like it was expensive. But that's just my interpretation. I could be wrong. And I agree...it's atrocious, but something that a mom could "throw" together and probably dazzle anyone within sight...eek! Not any customers of anyone in here, mind you. icon_cool.gif

Yes, I guess for a non-baker that would be a great idea. But its definetly not a $500 looking cake.

I understood what she was getting at. Made a cake that looks like $500.00 on the cheap and fool your friends....,(Not to be mean or harsh) But PLEASE!!! I wouldn't pay the $40 she caimed the cake cost! Is it just me or did she say wedding and anniversary in there.(lol). Now I will say this cake would be a fun project to do with the kids, since it is just assembly and great for a kid to give as a gift, but $500....come on Sandra icon_lol.gificon_confused.gificon_surprised.gif Lets be realistic. Maybe she just chose a poor example of what she was demonstrating...I hope.

Thanks who ever said Elisa Strauss!

Paula Deen!!

Uhh I use to love her, but i got so sick of her ohhhhh face, and dumb crossed looked, and playing up the fact she uses butter. Not to mention her overtly sexual tendencies on "Paula's Party." Come on, i liked when she acted like my grandmother, not my oversexed 20 year old cousin.

Good for all of them for making money, I would switch places with them, however, I am just not into their personalities anymore.

I didn't mean this to turn into a bash of SL... and if you love her cooking, ideas, or tablescapes, AWESOME! She is there to teach people but I just ROTFL laughing thinking about a $500 cake. I know she was trying to make it seem expensive, but they should have had someone else design the cake.. and show a picture for where they should specifically put flowers nad things. Plus you can't get away from the ugly blue shell border..... that SCREAMS grocery store.... especially in that shade.

This is the funniest thing I've seen in a minute LOL I've seen SL and I can't stand her show, as if she's the only person who grew up poor and had to make due with what she had. Ok she got lucky with the FN and that's all it was luck and no use of any cooking skills she may have.
Thanks for the clip it was too funny

Oh, Paula Deen is just a sweet, fun, slightly crazy woman. I don't make her recipes often because they seem really, really bad for you (like the Krispy Cream donut thing she makes. Talk about diabetic shock.)

But I agree with those who said FN has changed-I used to LOVE the Barefoot Contessa, watched her ALL the time, Tivoed it, even watched repeats. I wanted to be just like her, own a neat shop like that in my town, etc. But something changed with her show and I don't watch it anymore. It got weird.

Really, if someone who doesn't bake needed something to take to school or to a potluck and had no time or inclination to bake...this would be cute. I'm guessing having 1 minute to make it happen doesn't help the cuteness factor.

However, presenting it as something that is just as good as a professionally designed $500 cake is pushing it. I can't picture even the most clueless home cook buying into the $500 cake idea. Let's add it up. 1/2 sheet cake $35, 10" round $20, 6 cupcakes at least $12 but probably more, a dozen decorated cookies..at least $24. So, we have a $158 cake for $40. :p

I totally agree here. As a quick, throw-it-together for a family party or a school function, it's a cute cake. But I take her comments as she is trying to validate her GREAT IDEA by insinuating you can slap together a cake that would sell anywhere else for $500 .... it's insulting to those who make "real" cakes and implies that our pricing is overpriced and cheating the general public.

If it was presented as a quick and simple cake for a family party, then what would be her value? But gosh darn gee, look how SMART she is by showing you how to make a FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR CAKE .... and yes, she DID say she's done this for weddings .... for next to nothing.

That's what irritates me.

If you paint by number, that's fine and ok because you enjoy it. Just don't try to sell me on the idea that it looks just like a Picasso.

Yah, I think its happening with all the regulars on FN. Just like Emeril. Everyone got tired of the Bam! and the other catch frazes that were over used (I dont know where you get your water from but mine doesnt come seasoned). ... And now that their all going commercial happy with their own pans, and other lines of food its just too much.
Funny but the only show I can stand to watch now is Ace of Cakes!! But Im sure he will end up getting old sooner or later too. And Im so sick of the Next Food Network Star thing. But I agree they need to have a Challenge with Keenan, Kerry and the bald guy! I think that would be hysterical!

Kohl's has an entire "Food Network" line of products (not the celebrities, though they carry those, too) - everything from measuring bowls to coffee cups with the FN logo screened on. Like walking into BB&B and seeing that big wall of kitchen gadgets only everything says Food Network.

Oh, totally. I was so annoyed last season when that one guy won Food Network Star. They picked the worse one out of the 3, and they already had a show with a man just like that, cooking BBQ and everything. My DH and I were watching, and were like, WTF?

I'm kiddin. I couldn't stand him at first.and was pulling for "Ms. Dallas" (I'm Dallas Born!!!!). But then I changed my mind when she spilled some sauce on her expensive blouse and shoes. I figured most chefs are not wearing couture when cooking, so was a little turned off.

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

oh, the next FN star was just a joke of a show. And I really, really dislike the new show from it "Big Daddy's House" Now, that just borderlines on sexist or something, but it doesn't sit well with me. Guy Fieti (sp?) has some good recipes, but he's not the most fun to watch.

Barefoot Contessa was my favorite, and I still watch when it's reruns of her older shows. I agree, they were deffinantly a little more inspiring. But thats the kind of food I like to cook, and she's just so calm and upbeat (without the annoying peppiness). Alton Brown is absolutely amazing. I could watch Good Eats all day.

Personally, I can't stand the Chef Jeff Project. I think it's a great idea, taking people who would normally have a difficult time breaking into the culinary industry and give them a shot, but these are kids that don't want it because they enjoy cooking, they want it just because it's better than selling drugs. It just seems to me that there are more qualified candidates for those jobs. But then again, I guess that wouldn't be tv.

Sandra Lee probably didn't think the cake was worth $500, and the idea of buying pre-baked and iced cakes and touching them up is cute for busy families, but she just presented it all wrong. Oh well.

Oh, and I deffinantly agree with the comment on the "semi-homemade" bakers on CC. Doctored mixes are right up Sandra Lee's ally, am I right? Just makes baking easier and saves time - same as her concept.

Kohl's used to be great for kitchen gadgets. Now it's all orange FN crap.

You want to watch something sad, and funny, watch the rest of the 5 part "series" LOL with her, and Mario. Wear your seat belt, or your fall from LOLOL.

I LOVE INA GARTEN!

Such fantastic recipes and such a cute show. Her hubby is adorable, her friends amazing, and her house beautiful.

I am watching Good Eats now, though I should be studying for the GMAT (Business school admittance test, like the SAT but for grad school), I wonder if physicists and food scientists have as many problems with Alton as we do with Duff, and Sandra? Lol.

I'm in the minority here but I think it's an adorable cake for a child's bday! I like the idea .... the kids would LOVE to help decorate it. Great for the moms who really want to "make" their child's cake but don't know how to do one from scratch. Not a $500 cake for sure but very cute with do-able short cuts for the unexperienced cake bakers. I like Sandra... maybe a few too many espressos on her end but I'd love to have her energy and passion!

I was Barefoot Contessa sometimes but she is such a snob. and I think most of her "friends" are actor wanna-be's. I saw one of them in a commerical and poor guy, really cannot act. I really like her hubby though, he seems geniune and very sweet.

Sandra bores me, I don't even watch Rachel anymore. I love Alton Brown though - he can make the most boring subject, like cooking rice, into a super interesting show. I like Next FN Star to see what kind of challenges they get. I like Iron Chef and would love to be a judge but it would be my luck to judge offal, or green peppers or liver or some other disgusting food item that I don't eat.

Sandra's cake - hmmmm, something for fun with kids if you didn't know anything about decoration. Worth $500? Naahh, no one could believe that.

Yah B.F. Contessa always seemed like she was flashing her money at us. Like she wants EVERYONE to know that she drives a BMW, has a house in the Hamptons, etc. I like some of her recipes but I could do without the snobby attitude.
I know the Bare Minerals girl was a "friend" of the Napa Valley guy and was on his show one time.
But I think its time for FN to have a rival channel to get them back to wear it should be!
