Hi I'm new to cake decorating.I have to make a red velvet cake & was wondering what kind of frosting would go with it.I read somewhere that cream cheese goes with it but is that the only one?The only cake I've done was yellow cake with buttercream. Thanks!

I make red velvet all the time actually. It's my favorite! I use cream cheese if I can keep it refigerated &/or it's going to be eaten right away. My last 3-4 red velvets were iced with BC icing (for decoration purposes) & they tasted just fine. I don't know if I would recommend whipped icing, but I have thought about chocolate, didn't do it though.
Thanks,I wasn't sure if buttercream would go with it.Good to know because I have to make other cakes using buttercream this week. Thanks again!
Our first thoughts besides cream cheese was a chocolate or a fudgy type frosting.

Buttercream would also be fine. The original red velvet frosting is a cooked flour based one......
I do red velvet a lot too, but the best reaction I got was from my last one which I used Raspberry Cream Cheese filling. Everyone loved the raspberry with the RV. Big hit.
Wow!they all sound so good.I think I will start making red velvet more often. Thanks everyone for the help!
Red velvet cake is essentially a chocolate cake with red coloring in it. Anything that tastes good with chocolate cake would taste good with red velvet. My personal favorite is cream cheese, but I wouldn't turn it down no matter what was on it!
I have made it with vanilla IMBC and it's wonderful! I had a bride request raspberry filling in it and that was pretty good too. I think just about anything will go with it.
Thanks everyone for the help.I went with red velvet & cream cheese.I was told that everyone loved the cake & want the recipe.I didn't tell them that it was a box cake mix.The cake is the halloween cake under my photo. Thanks again for the help!
