I haven't forgotten to make a cake but I can imagine how horribly upset you are. I did make one a week ahead once. I was so mad that I had to go rebuy the ingredients.

I haven't forgotten to make a cake but I had the date wrong..I was just finishing the cake on a Saturday morning thinking the cake was due for the next day..Sunday...The doorbell rang also and when she came in and said I am here to pick up the cake for Blah Blah..I just about died....I quickly asked her if she could give me about another hour and she was fine with that!!She left and I scurried to finish..I almost died...I had it written down as the sunday...here I was even debating doing it that early on the Saturday....I did check and re check in several different places that I mark my orders down and I had the same date in a ll places so I think the lady gave me the wrong date...At any rate I had it finished and she came back and loved it...but talk about almost having a heart attack!!

No, thank goodness! I usually double check everything on Mondays-look through my schedule book and all my emails, to double check dates.

Sorry this happened! I think everyone is afraid of that!

I couldn't if I tried. I have 4x6 cards on a cork board, a dry erase board with the weekly schedule, my calendar online and a daytimer, and a file for each cake. Overkill? Maybe. But I feel safer with it.

Sorry that happened to you sweetie, I know I would feel awful.

Oh my gosh, I can't even imagine how you must feel right now! I'd be ready to crawl under the bed and hide for a week. That's one of my biggest fears, total cake collapse is my first of course! So I always check and recheck all my info.. even as I'm walking out the door on deliveries, I'm in my calendar checking time and address, even cake order. It's obsessive!

No I couldn't because the cake suposed to be a three milk cake and those take at least 6 hours in advance just to bake them, cool them, add the milk and put them back in the fridge for about an hour and then decorate it.

Well, I have forgot!!! But have since learned that I do not take cake orders in the grocery store, at work, at church or anywhere. If I run into someone in public and they want to order a cake I talk to them and sometimes give a price but I always say "If you really want this cake on that date call me at home where I have a order pad and a pen, or you can email me at home. If I don't get it on paper at house I am not responsible anymore. In this small town, where everyone knows me, it has not been unusual for me to run into several different people who want to order a cake. I have written cake orders on scratch paper or a envelope and the day a cake was due find it and near about panic.
I have parents tell their children to come to me at school where I WORK and order their own Bday cakes. That is a definite NO. Tell your Mom to call me at Home. Any way I know how you feel --been there, done that. And in the past 23 years it was more than once but not more that 3 times. icon_redface.gif

I have forgotten one before. It was for a co-worker. She had spoken to me about it a couple weeks earlier at my lunch break and I forgot to write it in my cake appointment book when I got back to my desk. I saw her early the morning it was due and she asked me how it looked (since she left all the decorating up to me). As soon as she asked me I remembered it and realized what had happened. I just confidently said, "Oh, you're gonna love it!" Then I made a bee-line to my desk to call my grandmother, who is an excellent baker. She baked it for me (which I have never done before or since) and I went home on my lunch break to decorate. I had a few extra flowers already made up and so I used them. Luckily for me it was only a 2-layer 8 inch round. I brought it back to work and she picked it up around 3:30 when she left for the day....none the wiser. That was the only time I have forgotten one and I hope it never happens again. I can certainly relate to you on this one.

I have not forgotten a cake but an order of cookies. I was at home, it was a rainy day, I was not doing anything really important when the doorbell rang..........when I opened the door I just looked at the lady, "Yes?" after a long paused that seemed like an hour she said that she was here for her cookie favors order for her son's birthday party. Suddenly all sounds went away, I got tunnel vision and I am sure all the blood drained out of my head and heart to my feet. I couldn't say a word, I just stood there with the door in my hand with visions of my calendar running through my head - what's this lady's name - when did she place the order, did I write it down, what did she order and then it hit me........... train cookies. She knew immediately that I forgot and said, "You forgot?". I was about in tears and she was comforting me for forgetting. I felt so bad, apologized from the bottom of my heart, offered to make it up to her but she said that it was ok as she ran out into the rain to her car empty handed. I slinked back inside and just cried. Of course, I never heard from her again.

Thank God this has not happened since!! I learned my lessson and never ever want to experience that again.

With all that being said I know how you feel. Keep your chin up and we are human right? and we learn from our mistakes.

Sending a big understanding hug,
bj icon_wink.gif

I was driving from work to home when I took this order, so I learned my lesson no more orders taken while I am driving or like you said no orders in the grocery store, at work, at church or ANYWHERE

I had a coworker ask for ideas for a cake for her daughter-in-law's birthday. The daughter-in-law is a hair stylist. We talked about designs back and forth by email of and on for about a week, then I didn't hear from her again until the day before the birthday. She asked how the cake was coming. HUH? icon_confused.gif We hadn't discussed flavor, price, how many servings she needed, the date she needed it . . . she was just asking for hair stylists themed ideas. I printed all of the emails and took them to her. I asked where she'd mentioned the date that she needed the cake - let alone that she wanted me to make it. Never again. It isn't a cake order until I receive the deposit and have the details in writing.

I once thought that I forgot about a cake. It was late friday and I thought ' oh no, I have a cake due tomorrow'. So I baked before going to bed so I could decorate in the morning. Got up early, decorated the cake, had several chocolate tranfers on it, put the 'sand' around the bottom, it looked great. Then I thought, why hasn't she called me to tell me what time she is picking this up? So I called her, it was for the following weekend!!!! Since I had to work that day also I took it to work with me and told my employee's it was employee appreciation day so I made them a cake. They loved it and of course I had to make the same cake the following weekend. It really could happen to any of us.

Ugh! I can only imagine how you felt. I have not forgotten, but I like to do a lot of my corresponding via email. Luckily, most people have email and will use it. So if someone calls me, I take down the information and then ask for an email address. I will email them an invoice with the details and pick up date. I ask for a response from them as well. I just like having everything in writing when taking orders - including their confirmation. This also helps me stay organized since I spend a lot of time on my computer checking my calendar and reading email.

Made the mistake of taking an order while at bowling. The guy wanted to pick up the cake the next day when he finished work at 4pm. Well he got off early and swore he said 1pm. So when he showed up to his cake and the gananche cooling, I had to ask him to wait a while. It was very embarassing especially because he had been complaining about the price and I told him that was the cost for a professional cake icon_redface.gif

Fortunately he loved it and asks me to do cakes all of the time.

His birthday was a few days after my husbands colleagues funeral, he was shot on the line of duty, and we had taken it kind of hard, and on his birthday I didnt get home till 6, so I had mom cook dinner while I hurried up with his cake, so sloppy I wont even post it on here.

I forgot a cake once too. It was for my mom's work and it was a surprise cake for an 80 year old man who never had a b-day party before. I felt like crap! The good news is she called about 3 hours before it was do and asked what time to pick it up. (I wrote it down for the following week in my calendar--oops) I had just enough time to bake the cake and ice it. Thank goodness it was a simple design because the doorbell rang as I was placing the last choc. dipped strawberry. I'm lucky it was also my mom who ordered, but in another way that was almost worse.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I know she was probably upset but did everything end on a good note? I imagine you were offering coupons and discounts the same as I would in that situation.

Either I inadvertently wrote down the wrong date for a cake or the customer told me the wrong date. I'll never be positive. It was for a neighbor. She called to say she was ready to pick it up, I told her that it was for the next day. I felt really bad. I was completely unable to squeeze another cake into what I was doing already. I suggested a couple of places for her to go and I thought all was well. A couple of hours later, there was a knock on the door. It was her daughter who was in town for this dinner the cake was intended for. She started in on me how I ruined her day. How I put her mother into a total emotional tailspin. All I could do was tell her how sorry I was. That I do not have a slipshod business and having this happen bothered me too. But all the while this lady was going off on me I thought how unstable her mother must be for this to have practically paralyze her. You can bet I won't do a cake for her now, God forbid it's not right and I cause her to have a breakdown. Don't get me wrong, I felt horrible. I've never forgot a cake before and this was upsetting for me, but I didn't have a breakdown over it.

Just last week. And the person who ordered it was a wedding planner! Yeah .... I want to have a terrible reputation with a wedding planner! icon_eek.gif She called to tell me she was on her way to pick it up for the bridal shower. I called her back and told her I had completely forgotten about it, but I could go back to the shop, bake it tonight and deliver it to her HOME in the morning. (the shower was the next day).

I had taken the order via email late at night and didn't have my calendar with me .... forgot to transfer it to the calendar!!

She was SO cool about it! Said she'd run to costco. I felt even worse that they were having a grocery cake for the shower. She was so wonderful about the whole thing. I did the wedding cake for her bride this past weekend (the chocolate & gold cake), and she loved it, so hopefully I redeemed myself.

Okay, so now I'm a little worried. About six weeks ago a woman I know said, (and this was in passing just as others have spoken of above) Oh, I should have you make my mother's 90th birthday cake!" I replied, "When do you need it?" She responded that the family was gathering out-of-town the weekend of the 31st and that she'd have to think up some ideas. Well, I never heard from her again and had simply dismissed it to the thought that she had someone else making the cake for her mother. I mean, we didn't discuss anything other than the date.

I'd hate to call her and seemingly ask in a casual manner whether I'm supposed to have a cake ready to roll this Friday, but, should I? You guys have me a little freaked out now.

If it were me (and if I had time to do it), I'd call her and say, "I was just calling to make sure you had a cake lined up for your mother's party. If not, I would be happy to make one for you." Then you'd know for sure and also make a few bucks. Ultimately you are not obligated to this lady since you have not discussed anything in the last 6 weeks.

Last November I took an order for a 16th b-day cake. The father was out of work and the mom was working 2 jobs (one started at 4am each day). She wanted to plan a party that her daughter would never forget. We created this really funky, uniqiue cake and e-mailed each other about the details. Early December I went to work for a friend for 3 days at her open house (Cake and candy supply) to thank her for all the help she had given me over the year. On Saturday, I brought home the fondant and coloring and cake plates etc. This cake was going to be one that I would feature on my website....I was so excited to make it because it was so unique. 4 PM Sunday come around and the phone rings and it's the mom asking "Where's the cake?". I literally stopped breathing and then she started yelling and we both started to cry. I had the wrong Sunday! I thought it was the following Sunday! I looked over on the kitchen counter and saw all the things I was going to use to make the cake. After a huge wedding season, it was the only cake Ihad to make!
I was devastated! I drove the hour long trip to the hotel where the party was and paid for the party. I live in a vacation/destination area and the mom's 2nd job was weekend manager for this hotel on the lake. The reality was, if the mom wanted to, she could have put me out of business. I cried for weeks every time I thought about it. The mom didn't cash the check for 3 weeks but them x-mas came and I'm sure $ was tight. About a month later she e-mailed me saying she understood that it was an accident. She thanked me for taking care of the party and said she would reccomend me to anyone and would use me again if she needed a cake in the furture. It's almost a year now and I still get emotional thinking about how I messed that one up. During this wedding season, I would get these moments of anxiety that I had forgotten something......so far so good...........
