Ok, my son has a late start day today (he's icon_cool.gif so he keeps asking me to make pancakes with the syrup already cooked in icon_confused.gif ...so this morning I made buttermilk pancakes and drizzled the syrup on one side, then flipped them over. They didn't turn out too bad! Now of course my kids like a little pancake with their syrup so it wasn't quite enough. Anyone else ever try it?

My son is (the 8 year old) often reminds me of ways to be more efficient...so I think next time I have to try to get the syrup and the sausage in the pancake as well. He doesn't want to just roll them up, he wants it cooked in the pancake.

Anyone got some good pancake stories/recipes?

Dang!! The syrup is making the "i" button stick! icon_biggrin.gif

Oooh, i love Chocolate chip pancakes....or how about Maple Pecan Pancakes..here is a recipe for Pecan Pancakes....

(I would prefer candied pecans & fresh whipped cream)

2 cups flour
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup finely chopped pecans, toasted if desired
1 cup buttermilk
3/4 cup milk
2 large eggs, separated
1/4 cup melted butter
vegetable oil
pecan halves or fruit for garnish, optional
Preparation:
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, soda, and chopped pecans.
In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and milk, egg yolks, and melted butter. Blend into the dry ingredients just until all ingredients are moistened.

Beat egg whites in another bowl until stiff peaks form. Fold into the batter until well incorporated.

Heat a small amount of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. When skillet is hot enough for a drop of water to sizzle, scoop pancake batter onto the skillet in about 1/4-cup portions, spreading slightly. When edges are rather dry and bubbles are popping and bottoms are nicely browned, about 2 to 3 minutes, turn over and cook the other side until browned, about 2 minutes longer.

My Aunt always made her pancakes with syrup in the batter. That's how I love to have mine. I'm not a drowner so mostly I dunk cause I have to have a certain pancake to syrup ratio but cooking the syrup in the pancake is perfect for me thumbs_up.gif

Now I want pancakes icon_biggrin.gif

omg kivia ... do you really go thru all of that just for pancakes??? I'm not a morning person, nor am I a breakfast person, so unless it's after 10:00 a.m. and unless it's the red box of "just add water", they can forage the kitchen for food themselves. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

My older son loves to take pancakes on the bus to school (1hr each way). I usually make a batter, throw in some bananas, walnuts...maybe some oats, chocolate chips. Or throw in apples & cinnamon. I'll have to try just adding the syrup to the batter, since I usually add lil sugar since he eats them plain (dry) they are actually called arepas here....

Love to have other easy....good eats for the kids.

Your pancakes sound more like cookies...with the oats, walnuts & chocolate chips icon_smile.gif

Indy...the only time i would do that is on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Or if i don't feel like it we'll go to Cracker Barrel for breakfast so that i can eat their Maple Pecan Pancakes and some homeade biscuits. My family always give me a hard time because i like to make my waffles, pancakes and biscuits homeade. They always call me on Saturday mornings to ask what if i made some homeade cinnamon rolls...and of course at that time i'm just taking a batch out of the oven and before i can put the icing on them i hear a knock at my door icon_lol.gif Whenever they want homeade breakfast they come to me icon_rolleyes.gif Hmmm..maybe i should just start charging for my breakfast icon_wink.gif

This thread is making me hungry. I love pancakes. Pancake batter can keep in the fridge for about 4-5 days I find covered with saran wrap. I was trying to get my 3 year old interested in breakfast so I started making pancakes for him. I'd make the batter and just use what I need to make him breakfast, refridgerate the rest, use it the next day and so on. I like that you can add so many things to pancakes, like blueberries, wheat germ, apples, chocolate chips, etc. If I'd run out of syrup, I'd just top it with fruit preserve.

I always make too much batter....but usually I will go ahead and make the pancakes and put them in the freezer. I've put jelly on pancakes, too...apricot is good.

I am a pancake-aholic in the worst way, as is my whole family! Some of my favorites are to pour the batter on the griddle and then sprinkle with cooked, crumbled sausage or bacon. YUM!! Also, have you ever had maple chips? Stir those in and oh my... delish! And pancake sandwiches are my fave! Pancake, slice of cheese, sausage patty, egg, drizzle of syrup. I eat it open faced because there is so much I couldn't eat the second pancake, but everyone else here likes a second pancake on top. Dang it. Guess what I am craving now!? We LOVE having pancakes for dinner around here! thumbs_up.gif

Ya know...that reminds me. My 8 year old had to take a big state-wide reading test not too long ago, and the school sent home a note asking us to make sure they had a good breakfast, without too much sugar. Now ...school offers a free breakfast, but I went ahead and made pancakes and scrambled eggs, to make sure he got some protein.

Then the school's brilliant "good" breakfast plan was to hand out Pop-Tarts! Wonder how many kids crashed from their sugar high while taking the test?

I make the recipe on the low-fat Bisquick box for pancakes, but I add half a can of pure pumpkin, some spices like cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon, a tsp. of vanilla, and about 1/4 c. brown sugar. So very yummy! Even better is when I have some caramel sauce (see my recipes) leftover, I reheat that and pour it on the pancakes *sigh* now I'm going to have to make this for breakfast!!

I guess I know what I will be doing tomorrow morning, all of this talk about pancakes sparked my craving button.
I really prefer waffles though, and that is what I usually make. I never use cake mixes....but I do like my Bisquick. I use the recipe on the box for "melt-in-your-mouth pancakes, and just add the oil to it. They are soooo good.
I don't like the syrup on or in the waffle though. I want to keep either the pancake or waffle fluffy. I keep the syrup on the side. I butter the waffle heavily, and dip each bite , dripping with melted butter, in the syrup and straight to the mouth. Of course, when fruit is in season, I always prefer fruit and whipped cream (real not cool whip).
I also like to mix up a batch of cornbread and cook it in the waffle iron.
Ummmm us cake decorators sure do know how to eat.

My DD loves pancakes, she'd eat them all day long if she could. We use sugar free syrup and when the have the regular syrup they don't like it(unless it's butter pecan syrup.........they love that) My DH likes dutch babies (german pancakes) When you bake it, it turns into a bowl and you add butter, powdered sugar, lemon and syrup. They are sooooooooo good.

Ohh I just looove me some buttermilk pancakes. There is a diner in L.A. called "John O'Groat's," positively the best buttermilk pancakes I've ever eaten. Flavorful and thick cakes that are still somehow light in texture. I have been dying to find a similar recipe but I have met with failure after failure icon_cry.gif. I finally gave up and started using a spectacular banana-macadamia nut pancake recipe. Mmm. But I still crave that thick, fluffy, zingy traditional cake.

For you waffle lovers, this recipe at AllRecipes is amazing, but you need to substitute 1 of the cups of milk with buttermilk, or simply use both cups of milk but add some powdered buttermilk. They are so flavorful they practically don't need any butter or syrup (but you know you'll use it anyway). Actually I popped some mini chocolate chips in once...or bananas, or subbed ground hazelnuts for some of the flour. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Emmas-Belgian-Waffles/Detail.aspx Even better than adding the bananas in, is rather to caramelize some sliced bananas and use them instead of syrup. Heaven I tell you!

I think this is such an appropriate topic, after all, pancakes are CAKE right?? Just cakes cooked in a pan. Hmph.

I adore pancakes - but...I must say...I make the best pancakes in the world. It is my one and only claim to fame. LOL

The first time I made my famous pancakes was after having a domestic squabble with Honey Darling Precious. I didn't have milk and he went to the store for some which means he had to be in the wrong (my hubby doesn't do errands EVER) and I made these pancakes. He said "If you weren't such a assinine I would tell you that these were the best d@mn pancakes in the world". LOL my kids love 'em and I love them too, swimming in butter and maple syrup!

I've made pancakes for over 40 years but the best I've ever had was at the Perkins restaurants in Florida, I could eat them until they'd have to roll me out the dor. I bought their mix and brought it home, added the ingredients on the label but it just wasn't the same thing at "all". icon_cry.gif DOES ANYONE HAVE THEIR RECIPE??????

This ia a recipe for perkins restaurant that I got from one of those download restaurant copycat things. They had some pretty good recipes

PERKINS RESTAURANT PANCAKES

4 c Bisquick or Jiffy Baking Mix
3 xl eggs, beaten
2 1/2 c club soda, room temperature
1/4 c melted vegetable shortening, room temperature

Put the dry ingriedients into a large bowl.
Add the eggs, club soda and shortening. Use a whisk to carefully mix until there are no more lumps. Donât Overmix.
Let the batter sit on the counter as you preheat your griddle on med-high heat.
Use about 1 tbls veg oil in the preheated skillet for each pancake. Use a 1/2 cup batter for each pancake.

This recipe makes about 10 pancakes.

edited to add...the diner where we go in San Diego told me their pancakes get alot of flavor because the griddle is so old. He said it gives it that flavor you can't duplicate at home. HTH

Does anyone have one of those pans with the cirlces already on it to shape the pancakes? My grandmother used to have one. SHe used to order these cute little boxes of pancake mix like buckwheat and buttermilk from the Wisconsin Cheese Man. SHe got the griddle from him, too. She would also ONLY use Mrs. Buttersworth syrup. I Mrs. Buttersworth but it's a bit expensive.

We use an Ihop copycat recipe, and I make huge batches at a time and sit in front of the griddle for what seems like hours making them. I freeze them on cookie sheets then put them in ziplocs in the freezer. You just have to nuke them when you want them, and they were frozen individually, so they aren't in a big hunk. My boys love them i nshapes...hearts for valentines, Mickey for what seemed like forever after our trip to WDW in March. We even make green ones for st Patty's day!

The recipe for Oatmeal Pancakes II on allrecipes is fantastic. I make a quadruple batch and freeze them, then pop them in the toaster on busy mornings. My kids LOVE them and I love that they're getting some whole grain along with all those syrup carbs! The recipe calls for quick cooking oats, but we use old-fashioned and grind them up before mixing. We also add pecans.

Delish!!!

Oh man!! You guys read my mind! I was just searching the web for pancake recipes cos i suddenly have a craving for them and you guys start a pancake thread!!! haha..

Jen1977 and Denise could you please please please share your pancake recipes with me?! Where i am the best pancakes around here are what you can get at McDonald's! Can you believe it!!

I was posted to the U.S. for work a year ago for about 2 weeks and happened to stop at IHOP to try their pancakes. It was only then that i realised what i was missing out on!! Those were the fluffiest pancakes i had ever had!! It literally felt like clouds in my mouth! It's no wonder that no one in my country craves pancakes since the best we can get is those at McDonald's :p So please please please guys.. pretty pretty please share your recipe with me so i can finally make my own pancakes and satisfy my long unsatisfied cravings for them. So far my attempts at various recipes have left me only more unsatisfied then ever since more often than not they end up tasting like flour and have the nice consistency of rubber.. bleh.

My dad ALWAYS made me Mickey Mouse pancakes when I was little! They were sooo good! Mmmm! Now I make them for my son....from scratch of course. I can't stand the mix. I guess I'm a pancake snob.

I also can't stand pancakes from IHOP. You know, for being the International House of PANCAKES, their pancakes sure do suck. Now when I want pancakes I go to a local restaurant called Magnolia Pancake Haus. They have the best pancakes I've ever tasted. Best part: kids get a free pancake! The pecan pancakes and eggs benedict are my personal favorites! ::drooling:: Okay, now that's what I want for dinner, but they close at 2 pm. icon_cry.gificon_evil.gif

OK people, if your "go to" recipe is the TS IHOP recipe, you have to try these banana-mac pancakes!! (well, presuming you like bananas+mac nuts and have no nut allergies of course.) I used to make the TS IHOP recipe all the time, I agree it was the best I could find...but I also agree with amia, I don't actually think theirs are all that good, at least not the ones in the restaurant. But the TS recipe was still better than so many others I tried. I completely abandoned the TS recipe after my first batch of these banana mac pancakes:

http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/BANANA-MACADAMIA-PANCAKES-WITH-ORANGE-BUTTER-107456

However I use a cuisinart on the macnuts and grind them up fine, and then I subsitute an amount of flour equal to the ground up nuts (so, I only use ground nuts, I don't also add the chopped nuts). That way the macnuts are infused in the pancakes better and the finished product isn't chunky. You can cut back on the milk by about 1/2c if you do this, to account for the lost flour. I just made these again this morning, they are sooooooo good!! I love it when my husband brags to people that I make "the best pancakes" due to this recipe! thumbs_up.gif

Still, I am anxiously awaiting someone's post of their outrageously delicious, buttermilky, zingy, light fluffy traditional pancakes...anyone...? Anyone...?! The above pancakes are AWESOME but sometimes I still just want the plain-old everyday pancakes.

p.s. I also don't bother with the orange butter part of that recipe; I'm just raving about the pancakes themselves)
