Yesterday I bought BakeMark's hi-ratio shortening. I bought a 50 lb block for a little less than $50.00 (tax included). I am going to make Sugarshack's buttercream icing and report back.

WISH ME LUCK!

Good luck! I have a question, probably stupid, but what is the difference between hi-ratio and Crisco. I never used the hi-ratio before. Just curious.

Thanks! And let us know how it turns out! icon_biggrin.gif

Best,

I bought it at the branch in Grand Prairie, Texas. They have cash and carry available.

Eisskween, i hear it makes for a much smoother and creamier texture and can hold more liquid. This will be my first time using it.

I wish I could buy Sweetex because I have read alot about it, but my checkbook doesn't like the price.

I do prefer Sweetex, but I can't afford it either, so I buy hi-ratio 3 lbs at a time from CountryKitchenSA.com

flg22275, I am probably in the minority here, but I prefer the BakeMark h/r over Sweetex. I broke down and got the Sweetex recently(necessity more than anything else). My icings are a LOT smoother with the BakeMark h/r.

Thanks good to hear! Can't wait to try it.

when I contacted bakemark they informed me that they carry several brands of h/r - which specific one do you use all4cake?

Mine said it was Brown h/r shortening. But that was in reference to the color of label. When I asked was Brown a name or the color she informed me it was part of the name. I heard another lady said they have an Orange. I spoke to the General Manager and she didn't indicate to me there were different brands. I hope I bought the right one.

I thought it was their brand....the labels on the sides said BakeMark.

It's not that I normally purchase that brand. I get the least expensive...

I haven't purchased directly through BakeMark. It was purchased online. I thought it was from countrykitchensa.com(not like I deal with so many companies that I can't remember) but when I ordered again from them, they sent a different brand. I shop at a handful of places...not all of them sell h/r shortening. I do remember it was shipped to me directly from their supplier(which I thought for whatever reason was ck ).

I've tried Alpine as well and even like it better than Sweetex. I do like Sweetex better than Crisco/regular shortening with or without trans fat.

I didn't mean to imply that I buy it exclusively.

You are not alone! I am the same way...I tried a lot of different hi ratio shortenings and I prefer Bakemark as well.

btw, may I ask where you are buying it from? I am getting mine from CK but would love to find somewhere where shipping won't kill me. My local distributor doesnt carry it and BakeMark told us they dont delivery to NC..

Ok..I DID IT!!!!!! It turned out really great. I think I need to find some more intensive flavoring besides the Wilton vanilla and butter. And I added some popcorn salt to cut some of the sweetness. But it tasted pretty close to what I normally make.

Here are the pictures of the icing in my KA.

Thanks. I was reading a post from Sugarshack saying she makes her icing a day in advance then frost the next day. So will let you know my results.

Wow, that looks great. I was excited to find hi ration shortening for the first time ever in my local decorating store. I haven't been able to find it before.

I just finished watching Sugarshack's dvd, and I have about 5 cakes to make in the next two weeks. Hopefully my icing will turn out as smooth!

There is a store near me that sells PS99 in the 50 lb block, but was unsure because there were mixed reviews. And the other store near me..sells Sweetex by the cup..and it was too expensive. So even though I probably won't get thru that much shortening..I don't feel bad about the cost. And it way cheaper than me buying the Wal-mart brand plus butter.

I think the next time I make it I am going to use the French Vanilla creamer to give it more flavor.

You can't get it at any grocery store (at least not in Texas). Maybe a gourmet shop would carry it, but not sure.

I am lucky enough to have a BakeMark warehouse about 20 minutes from my house, and have been buying their brown boxes of hi-ratio shortening for a couple of years now. I also LOVE their one-gallon jugs of butter-vanilla emulsion for 20 bucks.

They also carry Chefmaster colors, airbrush colors, powdered sugar, cocoa, and a ton of other cake stuff.

Thanks Cakepro..that butter-vanilla emulsion sounds EXACTLY what I need. I will be calling them on Monday. The one BakeMark near me is about 15 minutes from my house.

Cakepro---- I called the nearest BakeMark (Houston, Texas) and they told me that they sell wholesale only. Have any of you had a problem buying from BakeMark?

Yeah I just went up there today trying to buy some Sweetex and they only sell to a Business. They claim you need a storefront. This was at the Grand Prairie location. I read they posted some new rules as of June 2009. So I am back to hunting down Sweetex. Anyone know were to get some in Dallas/Ft. Worth area?

I also prefer BakeMark!
I don't know how far from Atlanta you are, but CK Products has a warehouse in Norcross, GA. (Norcross is on the northeast side of Atlanta.) I pick up my orders from there to save shipping costs...just a thought!
