My church is having a Fall Festival coming up in a couple weeks. There will be a cake auction, and I would love to donate a cake. I only make my daughters' cakes so transportation and packaging have never been an issue. So, my question is, how to do a "package" a 4-6 inch cake that keeps it protected yet visible at the same time?

I know it's a silly question, but I'm at a loss.

You can buy a plastic cake dome (the type you would buy a cake in at the grocery store where the top snaps on to the base). Many cake supply stores carry them or you can find them online.

I would probably just put it in a cake box. It's the safest method for transport. If you just open the box, and undo the flaps at the front of the box, the cake can easily be seen, yet still protected on the sides/back while on the table.

What about the cake box with the window?

Thanks for the dome and box suggestions. The problem is there's no cake supply stores where I live and to order online, you either have to buy a case of 50 or more or if you can only order 1 there's a $25 minimum order. I wonder if I could find an inexpensive regular plastic cake container at either WalMart or the Dollar Store (shows you the stores I have to work with).

If you just need 1, you may be able to get it from your local Walmart or grocery store bakery. They may charge you a small fee for them, or they may just give you one.

I have gone into my local grocery store's bakery department and asked them if I could just buy a box and they sold me one for like $0.33 or something like that. Once they figured out I just wanted a box and no cake to put in it

I do a lot of fondant cakes for a children's charity and the kids carry around the cakes for the day and want everyone to see it.

I make sure the cake board is a little larger than normal - at least 2-3 inches on each side of the cake and then I go to dollar tree and get the clear gift bags to put the cake into then tie at the top and put ribbons around the tie at the top. Makes it really cute and visible and dust free.

Have done it with a butter cream cake but was worried the whole time since they are carried around so much but if you are just moving it yourself and then letting it sit for a display the clear plastic gift bag is great. They come 2 in a package and the package is just $1. Sometimes will get the shrink wrap ones and shrink them around the board at the bottom but usually I just tape the corners under and it is a very nice way to display.

I have bought the plastic cake boxes at walmart and publix also but they are not really tall enough for any of the cakes I design.
