Pink Ziab,
I agree with you on being lazy, i just hate paying for something I know I could make at home... I will end up buying the sugarveil (at some point) and if I use a lot, i might venture into making my own
My interest is TOTALLY piqued.... I am doing much reading on this and nobody has mentioned what the texture is like once it dries or what it tastes like.
I understand it's not necessary to get the whole system, but what about that comb?
And for those of you who have used it...any tips for working with it (do's and don'ts)?
Did anybody get the dvd that they have?
When you make a 'sheet' of icing, how is that different from fondant?
I apologize if these questions are retarded, but I am just trying to 'wrap my head' around this product....after all.....my b-day is coming up
forgot some other questions:
can you use it to cover a cake?
And can you use it on cookies?
TIA
I'm waiting for my starter kit from SugarVeil. Comes with a 1lb bag, the comb, and an instructional DVD. From what I have researched, you can use it on anything at all that is edible...pastries, cookies, cupcakes, pies, cakes, you name it! I have been wanting to get artsy with my cakes, and this is going to propel me into that area...hopefully!
Making a sheet of this icing can't possibly be at all like fondant. It's going to be very thin, probably like a piece of paper...but flexible, able to twist, cut out shapes like paper punching, wrap around in swag like fashion, and I bet it will make swags like fondant can't possibly come near! Have you seen the bows that you can make? Looks like you can practically tie them up!
I can't wait for mine! I'm not buying that $150 applicator, I'm using parchment cones and fine Wilton tips if necessary. Also, some slender squeeze bottles with fine tips. It should do the trick.
Now...delivery dude, where ARE you?!?!
I'm sad but not surprised to hear they went their separate ways. I could not believe how the self-proclaimed "wet blanket" displayed so much disdain about the skull wedding cake. My 17 year old daughter was watching it with me and kept hollering at the TV, "IT'S NOT YOUR WEDDING, LADY!!" ROFL
I wonder how many episodes were produced. I hope it continues. I'm loving it.
Can you buy sugarveil somewhere besides directly fro sugarveil?
Thanks
Julia
I just bought some from KitchenKrafts.com
I'm just trying to find a reason to try some sugarveil. Anybody attempted the homemade recipe yet?
I looked on the sugarveil site and they have a distributors page. I didget it from them though...that starter kit was 40 from them amd like 65 from caljava.
I think the bows thye were making looked awesome. I hope the video is more instructional than a commercial though.

I'll try to address some of your questions:
- I mentioned in this post earlier it dries very brittle; depending on the humidity it can take some time to reach this point
- Its almost tasteless (maybe a bit bitter)
- the comb works fine - its 'teeth' are thicker than most icing combs and since the icing is so runny, this is important
- I have the DVD; gives some nice tips on using the product and is not a commercial
- If I make a 'sheet' of icing, I use it for all types of decorations (love it for punch outs)
- You don't want to cover a cake with this stuff - its nice for making lace that needs to be pliable
- you can use it for cookie decorations (I have some 4th of July cookies in my photos I used sugarveil on). Its stays a bit shiny. If you look at the photos you'll see some of the bows cracked because it dries so brittle (I won't use it for this again - only fondant bows!).
Again, don't bother with the dispenser. If you need one - I'll sell you mine ....
Thanks for the info!!! I think I am going to order some today. Where are you in NJ snowshoe1?
I can't believe it!!! I was looking at ordering it last night for the starter kit ($40), but now it is $51.50!!!!! What the $%#*$!!!!! Is it still worth it? I saw that sugarcraft has it for the $39.50, but it also says prices subject to change without notice (and I don't want to be surprised). Any other suggestions?

The dispenser went up in price too!! I can't tell if the other products did as well. What website has it for 39.50 still? Try spacing out the word so that it wont be blocked.

That just means they can up the price they charge at any time without a warning that prices will be going up. If you place an order at the advertised price they cannot surprise you and charge you more than it's listed for.
It dries brittle? How long does it take to get brittle?
I was planning to use to make spiderwebs that suspend from tier to tier on a 3-tier cake. If I put them on the cake the night before, will they stay pliable enough for travel the next day?
Or should I make them on parchment paper and attach when I get to the party?
I know it can be colored, but can it be painted as well? And how far in advance can I make a design? I have a couple of cakes to do on one weekend in November and if I can get a particular design done at least 2 weeks in advance it would save me a whole lot of stress!
I can't wait to start playing with it....I can't sleep at night because I have all of these ideas going through my mind....it's making me a little CRAZY!!!
