Last time I wrote, I needed a good buttercream recipe. Well indydebbie's is delicious and I use it often. My problem is this......I need to make LARGE quanities of this icing and I was just wondering if anyone had a suggestion on what to use in place of the "Dream Whip". I can't keep buying boxes of this stuff because it's too expensive for the amount I need for each batch. Does it come in bulk perhaps?

I know what you mean, I've looked at Sam's and BJ's here in MA and they don't sell Dream Whip . I agree it gets expensive....so I think I'll only use that recipe on my Summer Wedding cakes when it's humid. My other BC holds up o.k. the rest of the time.

The problem with the no dream whip is the trans fat or the lack there of...the dream whip binds it together and thats why it holds up better. It probably won't hold color either very well.
I had to adjust my cake cost to be able to afford the good stuff....for me it is worth it!
If someone does know of a lower cost version I am sure alot of us would want to know!!

You are correct about it not holding color as well. When I added color to my old recipe, it broke down and seperated quickly. I'm on a quest now to find a cheaper solution. (But of course one that won't compromise the taste)

I did a little search for you. All I could find were to substitute Cool Whip for Dream Whip for whipped cream, until I came to this.

Non-dairy Creamer [coffee creamer] can be whipped into topping like dream whip. I get the large jars at Sam's club & the directions are on them. It's 2 parts creamer to 1 part cold milk: sugar & vanilla to taste. It takes 5 - 7 minutes of whipping at high speed until stiff. Keep on hand for when you are out of cool whip. Pretty handy. and so much cheaper than dream whip. Chris in NM

I hate to ruin a batch of frosting but maybe I will try it.

I found some whipped topping mix on Amazon I think it's called Njoy, it is the same as dream whip only a lot cheaper. It comes in a box of 12 packages of 12 ounces each. I bought it over the summer, so I don't remember exactly what I paid for it, but I know it was a fraction of the cost of dream whip. I searched for an alternative because I also thought the dream whip was too expensive.

I don't know that cream will solve the problem with the new crisco. I would stick with the dream whip or find another recipe. You might try sugarshack's recipe.

So if I understand this correctly...

Inideby's recipe holds color better than my old recipe. I suppose it depends how much coloring you add.

I DID find a recipe for icing using merinque powder. Hmmmm......

What kind of Dream Whip prices are you seeing in your part of the country?

In my area, I get Dream Whip at Walmart .... $3.84 for the big box. It has 4 envelopes. Each envelope makes at least 2 batches (normally 2.5) of icing ... a batch defined as 2-lbs p.sugar. This breaks down to about $0.48 per batch of icing. For a 3-tier wedding cake for 100, I can get by with four 2-lb bags of sugar ..... that's only $2 worth of dream whip in a $300 cake.

I've had no problem with it holding color, check out my hamburger cake in my photos. Very vibrant colors.

I'm sorry in my opinion there is no substitute for dream whip in any recipe for instance besides cake cherry yum yum cool whip doesn't even come close but really for the cost it isn't that bad for the quality of product.
