Opera cremes are basically a fondant covered with chocolate. Back in the day it was considered gauche to chew in public so these little melt-in-your-mouth yummies were made for the opera attending crowd, hence the name "opera cremes."

According to legend there was a candy maker who wanted to invent a candy that was a witness to Christ.

First of all, he used a hard candy because Christ is the rock of ages. This hard candy was shaped so that it would resemble a âJâ for Jesus or, turned upside down, a shepherdâs staff. He made it white to represent the purity of Christ.

Finally a red stripe was added to represent the blood Christ shed for the sins of the world, and three thinner red stripes for the stripes He received on our behalf when the Roman soldiers whipped Him. Sometimes a green stripe is added as a reminder that Jesus is a gift from God.

The flavor of the cane is peppermint, which is similar to hyssop. Hyssop is in the mint family and was used in the Old Testament for purification and sacrifice. Jesus is the pure Lamb of God, come to be a sacrifice for the sins of the world.

So, every time you see a candy cane, remember the message of the candy maker: Jesus is the Christ!

-*-

Look at the Candy Cane
What do you see?
Stripes that are red
Like the blood shed for me
White is for my Savior
Who's sinless and pure!
"J" is for Jesus, My Lord, that's for sure!
Turn it around
And a staff you will see
Jesus my shepherd
Was born for Me!

or

Candy Cane Story

Jesus Gentle Shepherd,
this cane of red and white
proclaims the sweet love story
born on Christmas night

This cane, you see, when turned around
begins your name of Love
and now becomes a symbol
of peace proclaimed above
The lively peppermint flavor
is the regal gift of spice
The white is your purity
and the red your sacrifice

And so this cane reminds us
of just how much you care
and like your Christmas Gift to us
it's meant for all to share

This is the first year I've seen the M&M poem. I was thinking the fun size bags of m&ms might be nice stuffed in the little organza (sp?) bags with the poem printed on a 3x5 note card attached with a ribbion. Maybe have the card background be the nativity scene. hummmm my print program is on the other computer. I'll play around a bit and see what I can come up with.

My Grandma used to make buck eyes. And I haven't seen anyone mention popcorn balls or candy apples yet.

We have to have this every year too!!!

OVEN CARAMEL CORN

15 cups popped popcorn
1 cup packed brown sugar
½ cup margarine or butter
¼ cup light corn syrup
½ tsp salt
½ tsp baking soda

Heat oven to 200°. Divide popcorn between 2 ungreased
rectangular pans, 13x9x2 inches. Heat brown sugar, margarine,
corn syrup and salt to simmering over medium-high heat,
stirring constantly. Cook, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes;
remove from heat. Stir in baking soda. Pour over popcorn;
stir until well coated. Bake 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
Makes about 15 cups.

Nutty Caramel Corn: Decrease popcorn to 12 cups. Add 1 ½
cups walnut or pecan haves and/or unblanched whole almonds
to each pan of popcorn before stirring

I have 2 really easy recipes, and great for the kids to help with.

Coconut Drops:

1 whole large bar of Almond Bark ( chocolate or White Chocolate)
1/2 Bag of coconut.

Melt the chocolate, and pour in the coconut and mix. Drop by spoon fulls onto wax paper and let set. These were super easy for my kids to do, and help out. They were even a bigger hit in the care packages I give out.

Dipped Marshmallows:

1 whole large bar of Almond Bar ( chocolate or white chocolate)
1 bag of large Marshmallows
1 bag of pop cycle sticks

Insert the sticks into marshmallows, and dip into the melted chocolate. Let set on wax paper.
These were a huge hit with the grownups and a must have in my future care packages.

fiddlesticks
What is sea glass candy if it isn't a clear hard candy? I'm 41 yrs old and don't remember every hearing of sea glass candy. The candy link I posted is very close if not the one I use to make red hot cinnamon hard candy. Just wondering. Thanks!

Sea glass is a hard, clear candy (like a lollypop without a stick) that is broken into shards and rolled in confectioners sugar to make it look like sea glass. I just remember it being divine as a child. icon_biggrin.gif

Ok, I guess the sea glass candy is just another name for hard candy. Then the link I posted would of been what bob wanted.
At christmas I make the hot cinnamon and for my MIL I make the anise hard candy. The house smells of black licorice for hours after making the anise.

Ok, the file is updated! I've been out of town since Thursday, sorry.

I think the M&M's idea is cute, would be neat to package red and green M&M's in a while tulle circle, with a Christmas tag tied to it with that poem on it! Neat! Or, do half and half... red M&M's in a green tulle with red ribbon, then green M&M's in red tulle with green ribbon! Or you could do all three for variety!

I love making Anise candy, it's one of my favorite flavors of all time. My three year old is nuts about it too! He goes wild over it! (I even have Anise flavored toothpaste from the Health Food store!!)

Well, here's an old favorite for kids... easy and yummy!

Christmas Wreaths

1/3 c. butter
1 (10.5 oz.) package large marshmallows
6 c. cornflakes
1 t. green food coloring
¼ c. cinnamon red hot candies

Directions: Melt margarine in a large pan over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir constantly until marshmallows melt and mixture is syrupy. Remove from heat. Stir in food coloring. Add corn flakes and stir until well coated. Drop mixture, by 1/4 cupful, onto cookie sheet. Using buttered fingers, quickly shape into individual wreaths. Dot with cinnamon candies

Oh, I LOVE the M&M poem!! Thanks!!
The other, more irreverant (sp???) poem that I like is the one you attach to a bag of mini marshmallows with a chocolate spoon.
It goes something like this:

You've been naughty,
Here's the scoop,
This year you get...
SNOWMAN POOP!!!

Fiddle, that is probably the same recipe I sent you when you asked for my caramel apple caramels recipe. But you would use anise instead of the apple flavoring. (Wait... did I give you the one that calls for whipping cream?) That's how it originally started out, as anise, then I started adding different flavors, that's how I got the caramel apple caramels! YUM! I don't color mine black though, I color it red. Prettier, and it doesn't stain your mouth! Hehehe. But thank you Tammy!! You can post it still, I can compare it to mine, and if anyone else wants it, then it's here!! Thank you, that is very nice of you!
