Ok so I made 5 pounds of michele foster fondant to color royal blue.

It has a funny green tint. Like it wants to be an aqua green/ blue.

I HATE it. It is totally not the right color. I have to have this done by Thursday PM
How do I fix it? It just is not the right color at all.
I so do not want to make another 5 pounds BUT
Any suggestions?
What about air brush? Over the top of the color? But what color to use??
AND How many of you air brush your fondant as opposed to color it? I have used a lot of color and it is still not right so I wasted it as far as I see unless someone can help.

Oh please come up with a magic fix!!

You could airbrush the royal over the tinted fondant. I think they say to airbrush in layers anyway, so it may give it the depth it need to get the color where you want it.

You could also hand paint it if you dislike the look of airbrushing, using the same airbrush color..... just a thought. icon_smile.gif

The cake is 2 9x13 sheets carved to be a 3 and a 0.
I have never painted a WHOLE cake with a brush before
Would is get the fondant soft or squishy??

I am not sure why you are having the color problem, It may be the brand, I know I have had a similar issue with a black. Only a certain brand though.
I would say do the airbrushing at this point, save the headache. It airbrushes nicely just make sure you put it on lightly and layer to get darker, that way it wont look like you have dye buildup on your fondant.
Hope that helps.

Please let us know how you made out.
I've never heard of Hawaii blueicon_smile.gif That seems to me like it would be an aqua shade.
Sky blue also has a green base icon_sad.gif
Yes, I also have had trouble with airbrush colors not being true. The 1st bottle of red I had was sooo dull and off color I hated it.

What brand are you using. I know I got some brand that I dont usually use of black and it was not black. it kept changing to greenish or purplish depending what it was on. The Americolors seem to give a very solid true color.

well first I added the gel color americolor royal blue to it. That was where the issue arrised. But I had to add so much it got a bit sticky so I am letting it set a while. The hawaii blue is a off brand. Let me see if I can attatch some photos..

What if you added a bit of black or brown to darken it up?

As for the sticky. You can start kneading it with cornstarch that will help alot and keep it nice and elasticy. Dont add too much at once tough.
I hate to say this but It looks like you just need more color at this point.
Why dont you take a small piece off and test it to see if the color gets there. That way you dont break your hand with the whole mound. I think it is getting there, just not dark enough yet. And Like I said the cornstarch will be your new friend. icon_wink.gif I hope that helps.

BTW, I do add some black sometimes to help it out, just be careful, not too much, it will change the color.

Hee hee you're so funny. But you know how it is when you get so worked up about something, you just dont think in the same way.(at least I dont) Good luck, I bet it all turns out just great in the end.
Try to get some sleep and no dreams about blue fondant. icon_wink.gif

Ok I admit I accepted (ok not accepted well) defeat on the fondant a bit early.

I had a DUH moment....
BUT
Today I added a bit of color to a small piece icon_wink.gif and it was just right.
So I just needed to add more color.
I did add so much that it is sticky now but the corn starch should help right?
Will it affect the rolling out of the fondant much?
I don't do fondant much as you can see in my photos. But it is what the customer wants.
Thanks guys you ware a big help even in calming the NERVES which were fraying..

So a thought or Question....When it comes to coloring fondant, especially darker colors like blue, what is your prefered mothod?
Add and kneed..
Airbrush...
Paint with a brush..
Or suck it up and spend the $$ on premade precolored...(which I debated but they are always out of stock)

Is there a thread on this already? Should we do a poll??
Anyone want to know besides me??

Ok, first the corn starch makes it really easy to roll out and handle. I often do it with the dark colors bc like you said it gets sticky and it brings it back to where it needs to be.
I dont know if you have ever tried the MMF but it is easy to make and much less expensive, and tastes better.
For me it depends on what I am doing how I color it. Sometimes I airbrush, like I did a banana and wanted the inside of the peal still white, so I airbrushed the outside. Sometimes the solid color works well and it is the nice smooth even color. I paint it if I want to make a texture, Like doing wood, works great to paint it.
OMG, is that too much info. icon_wink.gif I hope that helps.
I am glad the color worked out.

Wouldn't it be possible, if you're making that much of one color, to add the color while you are making the fondant, say to the milk??

I've had to make dark colors several times and I just keep adding color until I get what I want. I agree with the idea to add it to a small amount of fondant to test. As I add more color, I add more powdered sugar or cornstarch to offset the additional liquid in the coloring. Another thing to remember is that the color wil deepen overnite, so make it, get it close and let it sit overnite.

I don't have an airbrush and I doubt I will ever buy or use on and I don't paint, so coloring the fondant is the only thing I will probably do.
