Ok Honestly How Hard Are These To Make?

I have a customer that wants the beer bucket cake with the sugar beer bottles. I have NEVER attempted any sugar work what so ever.. In fact I am deathly afraid of the thought of hot sugar!!!! So how many people have done it, and honestly how hard is it??? ALso she wants green beer bottles to mimic heiny bottles...any suggestions on how to color it? I only see directions on how to make the brown bottles. I found the instructions from SWEETRESULTS and that makes it sound easy...just wanted some opinions and some confidence building. Thanks in advance!!! AMY
Really not hard at all - give it a try you will be surprised! This was the first mold I ever made and the first time at sugar work. I managed to make the molds and six bottles in about 2 or 3 days.
Add green color to the corn syrup before you mix in the sugar and you will get green bottles - I have a St. Pat's beer cake with a green bottle in it.
The measurements are 1/2 cup corn syrup to 1 cup sugar, they don't show up in the original directions post for some reason.
Good luck!
I may have a cake with a sugar wine bottle to do soon - if I do I will take pictures along the way while making the mold and make a real tutorial for these sugar bottles. Will keep you posted!
I tried to find the instructions to make bottles but couldn't find it.
Could you please post the link to the instructions?
thanks,
I went in the search and typed in sugar beer bottles and at the bottom in the forum is where the link was for sweetresults directions...wish me luck I am as nervous as a priest in a strip club!
SweetResults is right. Just like anything else you have to give it a try - you might just surprise yourself. I think the hardest part was making the mold the right thickness so it could roll off the bottle and be reused. I made the cake below, and I have problems walking and chewing gum.
I've seen similar cakes on the Wilton web site, and they used Knox gelatin for the ice cubes. They looked like real ice cubes, but I think I prefer the "crushed ice" look that I got from corn syrup and sugar.
THANKS for all your help, advice, and well wishes... I also saw on here someone used premade rock candy for the ice. I saw the geleten idea as well...but not sure of that and how it would hold up out of the fridge...I will post my results. I will keep my fingers crossed!
Cambo has posted some in the last few weeks on the Wilton site that are just AWESOME !
Try this link. I looked for a long time before I found it.

What do you make the moulds out of? i think these bottle cakes you all do are just fabulous and it would be fab for my uncle hehe he loves his beer.. thanks again
Probably the modeling silicone they have on the market. The stuff works great for any kind of mold. But whichever type you use it can be found at

I'll be on the look out for that "Wine Sugar Bottle" tutorial. Thanks for the inspiration. I can't wait to give the beer bottles a try in the near future.
apetricek I can't wait to see how your sugar beer bottle cake truns out, good luck.
The silicon molds should be okay for any hot liquid.
Just a tip, when working with hot sugar, wear 2 layers of latex surgical gloves and you should burn yourself.
If anyone is able to make the molds, I'de love some pointers, I read the tutortial and tried 5 times to make the mold, I just couldn't get it to mold to the bottle and be a consistant thickness all the way around.
I made the molds from "Amazing Mold Putty." I found it at Hobby Lobby and at Michael's. The mold needs to be thick enough to hold it's shape when you pour in the hot sugar, yet thin enough to roll off the cooled sugar without ripping the mold. I ruined a couple molds before I got it right.
So, if I am understanding right these are only half bottles vertically? But are the all the way around front to back? I think I may hit the hobby lobby tomorrow to see what I can find. Thanks for all the info everyone! I would love to make one for my BIL when he returns from Iraq-he loves heineken!!!
My bottles are whole bottles, they are just open at the bottoms and they area hollow like a real bottle.
ok I have another quick question....so am I to cover the top of the bottle completely when I am making the mold...so technically the only thing that is open will be the bottom? Then when I put it into the clay should it be completely verticle? Sorry just want to make sure I have this completely before I start...I am off tomorrow to get my mold making supplies...is it best just to put on with a regular paint brush too? Thanks again, besides being nervous about doing this, I am starting to get excited I LOVE a challenge...hopefully these won't win.

Yes. Leave the cap on the bottle and cover the top half of the bottle with the molding putty. Leave the bottom open so when the putty has created a mold, you can slide the beer bottle out.
The mold putty that I use has a consistancy like Play Doh or Silly Putty. You mix two types of putty together and it creates a silicone mixture. You apply it by wrapping it around the bottle and allowing it to firm up for about 25 minutes. It creates a flexible mold that can be used over and over.
thanks JOCMOM I am going to Michaels today and get the Amazing Putty, and hubby is getting me the heinie bottles...wish me luck! I will post my results after the 27th! thanks all of you guys you have been A GREAT HELP!!!!

thanks for the link
Thanks for the info SweetResults. I knew that I was mixing something up. I will have to try to find some moldmaking stuff at hobby lobby today!
Can anyone point me to the instructions for making the ice? I have the directions for the bottles (fantastic!!) but can't find the ice!! If it's buried in that long thread with the bottle instructions, can someone tell me about what page? Or does someone have them?
Okay, I got the amazing mold putty picked up to make the bottles. But I couldn't find the modeling clay that seemed right to make the hard mold to hold the mold's shape. Do I use any kind of modeling clay or what?? Help, help!!!! BTW, I only have hobby lobby and walmart to chose from.
