Does anyone know if/where I could get slats for rolling cookie dough that are plastic instead of wood?
If not, what type of wood would I be looking for at Home Depot? Thanks in advance!
I don't know about plastic, but Home Depot has precut wood in their trim department. They are not the long pieces for house trim, but smaller pieces in oak, walnut, etc. I think it's for furniture or cabinetry. I bought two 24" long by 1/4 " thick pieces, and for thicker cookies, 1/2". Since they make cutting boards out of oak, I feel I'm pretty safe. I roll between parchment paper anyway.
Hope this is helpful.
I had my DH cut and plane some for me...pine I think..1/4 inch and 3/8 inch..I also put parchment under and on top...
Country Kitchen Sweet Art online has them.

Ditto on Home Depot. That is where I got mine and I love them. As long as you don't soak them you will be fine. I just dunk them in soapy water and then use a sponge to get off any cookie dough and flour and rinse them. I set them on the dish drain and let them dry.
Michelle, thanks for the link because I had no idea what a cookie slat was!
I just use 2 dowel rods on each side of the dough. I also roll between two sheets of parchment.
Thank you all so much! I was worried about using wood for both chemicals and getting cookie dough all over it. And for some reason, I was picturing the rough sawn pieces on lattice that crisscross and couldn't get my head around that idea! I'd much rather use plastic, but I prefer thicker cookies also, so may have to enlist my DH to come up with something the size I want.
That said, whoever came up with the idea of rolling dough between parchment is PURE GENIUS!!! I've been using a pastry cloth for years and thought that system was pretty darn good until I tried the parchment. LOVE IT!!!
Thank you again for your quick responses!
hmmmm i am trying to not run any errands tomorrow, but almost decided to run to Home Depot. I then looked over at where I have a piece of 1/4" foam board thats not being used. I think I'm going to cut that down and make cookie slats out of that. Thanks for the inspiration!

Just make sure you don't push too hard as foam core is springy in the middle especially the thinner you cut it.
Just a thought.
I did think of that after i posted, lol. I'll experiment with it and see how it goes. Since I always roll out cookie dough to thin it's got to help. lol
I know some cookie decorators use a wooden yard stick cut in half -- if you want to save $$.
