Ugg, I'm up working on a 3D hot air balloon, I got the basket, structure, and cake up on the balloon part but having trouble getting the bottom of the balloon part to come down small enough to look right...

time to just start filling the basket with people or animals or something to distract from what I don't like about the balloon icon_biggrin.gif

Petit fours = major PITA.

OK, here goes, and you're going to have to visualize.

Make a sheet cake. fill or not, your choice. Frost the top with a thinnish layer of bc. Freeze.

Make poured fondant. The Wilton recipe actually works. Don't let the temp go higher than 92F. Us a thermometer.

Get a cooling rack that's a grid, or criss cross two. Set them on 4 tall drinking glasses. Make sure the height of the glasses = the height of the skewer you're going to use two steps forward.

Pull sheet cake out of freezer. Cut into squares. The size is 2-3 bites.

Put a skewer into the cake piece. Dip it in the poured fondant. put the skewer with the now frosted cake thru the cooling rack so that the skewer is hanging below the grid. Pull out the skewer. Your fingers never touch the petit four and since you're dipping it, it gets covered completely. The freezing produces fewer crumbs in the poured fondant, and causes the fondant to set up quickly on the petit four.

leahs - that sounds like a really smart method for peteit fours. Maybe I'll get to try them someday...

I'm a total beginner, but I decided to enter in the State Fair, bit off way more than I can chew, but its motivation, right?
Anywho, I'm making a batch of MMF and dying it, then trying to pipe butterflies out of RI, as an experiment. No cakes for me tonight icon_sad.gif

Teena - That witch is amazing! How did you get the curls in her hair so defined?

i took a small bit of fondant and rolled it into a small coil in my hand, then i folded it in half to make a V shape (thus creating 2 pieces of hair because i connect the bottom of the V to the head) then i just twirled the ends with my fingers. My hair is very curly when not contained, so i get lots of practice trying to twist my own curls to get them to fall nicely lol

I'm still up making cookies and waiting for Dh to get home from work. It's still strange that I'm not freaking out over getting everything done for my normal orders. Funny thing is that most of my orders rescheduled to next weekend where I already had previous orders. I didn't want to say no since all of them had left deposits and well...........its not there fault a hurricane was coming icon_smile.gif

44

but each has to be cleaned up with an exacto and dusted with sparkle, so it took a while.

Starting to clean up the kitchen now.

Lace motif = molded lace out of fondant. Using those blue silicone molds.

Wow that seems like a lot of work to me. Are they done with molds? What kind/type/brand of molds works best for fondant/gumpaste? and where can you buy them?

I've given up on the hot air balloon tonight, fresh eye tomorrow, but I'm working on a 4 jokers cake.

My husband looks at me so funny when I say I'm going to cut out fondant cards and paint the jokers on them....why don't you just put cards on the cake??

....umm...because I can!?!?! Because I want to see if I can, because thats what makes my cakes better than walmart, because....Just BECAUSE!! icon_biggrin.gif

Hi everyone. Main computer is on life support so I'm using one that runs on hamster power...sloooooooowww...

Just finished a cake for coworker's daughter. I used the cinnamon toast cupcake recipe from the Cake Doctor. First time baking an 11 x 15 cake. Frosted in buttercream and decorated with fondant appliques using her party invitation as inspiration.

I think I'll clean the kitchen tomorrow.

To those of you still up and about, have a good night.
