VENT, I'll try to make it short.
DGD, 1st year cheerleader, 12 years old, bake sale that the girls are required to donate 3 doz anythings for fundraiser for their squad. OK, so we pick out these as something that looks cool, we can do together, and maybe make a few bucks for the squad. Anyway, we had a ball making them together. She was so proud. We even made a CC stand that looked like a movie reel. So we get to the school with the CCs. The 1st person we see is a woman that helps with the squad, and she says SHOWOFF! Not once, but twice. Then the assistant coach comes up to us as we are trying to put CCs on the stand and asks if these are the ones that were featured in Family Circle last month. I said, no I saw them on a website for Professional Cake Decorators! and that was probably who submitted to the mag. She says, "Well, that was their Feature last month." Then the 1st B otch says, "I stop at Dunkin Donuts, and SHE brings these!"
I wanted to throttle them both. What the H@## did I do wrong? BTW, thanks for the idea, CC. they were a big hit and sold out in 15 mins.

They were exactly right though...you were 'showing off' that you and your DGD had style, skill, and talent...something I'm sure they were lacking as well as a good attitude, grace, and tact.

isn't it funny how the only way other people can feel good about themselves is by putting other people down?

Your cupcakes look fantastic! It is a wonderful thing that you and your daughter were able to work on these together, making memories. She will remember these always.

I really don't understand why those women acted like that. They should have been proud to have such nice items at the sale.

I would have sweetly smiled and said "why yes, I am a showoff. I love to show off what can be done with some talent." Hmmmm..maybe that should be changed to MY talent...sounds like a dig the first way.

People can be so tacky.

They should have been excited to have such cute cupcakes to sell for their bake sale. Draws attention and helps them make money. Wasn't that the object of the bake sale. You did great and it is their problem.

Don't sweat it - you just showed them up and they didn't like it. They will get over it and maybe they will spend some time with their kid making treats next time.

I would of had to say something like "If showing off is my daughter and I doing something cool together then I am - you should try it sometime...

Thanks for th nice comments everyone. I've cooled off today. Just to be clear the pic was from this site, be we made ours identical to them. didn't get a pic. Any way this way for my Granddaughter, so it was extra sweet to spend time with her.

Okay - please don't flame as I know ALL cheerleaders and cheerleader moms are not like this, most of them are great, super, normal people.... HOWEVER.....

These are stereotypical bitchy jealous cheerleader moms! The kind who give cheerleaders a bad name. They are just ladies who probably didn't make the squad or head cheerleader as a kid and now want to live their dreams through their poor daughters. And your DGD is wrecking it for them and making them look bad! Geesh - the NERVE of you! Bringing better baked goods than the rest of the squad! What were you thinking? She is only a FIRST YEAR squad member - isn't she supposed to walk 2 steps behind the other girls and not take the spotlight away from them? I can't wait to see what happens when she can actually CHEER better than their kids as well - oooh boy!

Good for you for bringing in something special and getting to spend extra time with your DGD. Make something even better the next time - the girls on the team will love and appreciate it even if the Moms don't!

" the cutest " items...then they are jealous! These people were probably the ones in school who were popular, and you up staged them!!

You had a good time with your granddaughter, and would think that the others would have been thankful that you showed up with such cute treats!!

Maybe next time they shouldnt be a bunch of lazy jerks and insted of stopping by the store at the last second they will choose to spend the time with their children . Whats the point of a bake ssale if its just something anyone can run down to the store and pick up. Dunkin donuts (jerk)

My daughter is only in second grade and MAN do I get nasty looks (with childish whispers included) come bake sale time at her school (my chef instructor in culinary school said she always had the same thing happen when her daughter was young). People can be SO ridiculous sometimes!

It actually cracks me up that she got her panties in such a wad when all she did was "stop by Dunking Donuts" - I mean SERIOUSLY - even bad cookies would have been better than that! when she said Showoff - you should have looked at her and said LAZY! It wouldn't take much effort to be a showoff compared to her!

I love that you got to spend time with your granddaughter baking and decorating. I will never forget the times that I had with my grandmother painting and I'm 34! I just hope that I can make those kind of memories for my daughter!

Next bake sale - start early and make something so over the top that she really looses her cool - it only makes her look bad!

I have gotten a similar reaction every year at our school's annual bake sale. Small town, and I'm the only local semi-professional cake decorator with children in the school. EVERY.SINGLE.YEAR. they look at me like I've got 2 heads 'cause I come in with something they consider "over the top". Whatever. It's a donation for the school to raise money, so I try not to sweat it.

I new a woman just like that - she'd organize bakes sales and such and then if someone who couldn't actually bake but bought stuff, or - Horrors - used the slice and bake cookies, she go on for hours about how inappropriate it was for them to do that. Some people are never happy unless they themselves are being fawned over. Sounds like her panties were in a bunch and needed to take it out on everyone else.

lainalee: NOT stooping to retaliatory remarks makes you not only talented, but gracious. You took the high road and chose not to wallow in the mud. HOWEVER, look out!!! I'm willing to bet the next time your granddaughter's squad needs a special occasion cake, or another batch of cupcakes for an event, you will be the first person they contact. ...happens every time!

I think that unknowingly, that woman paid you the highest compliment possible. In one fell swoop she told you that:
A. Your cupcakes were the BEST baked goodies at the sale
B. Your cuppies would get the most attention and therefore raise the most money
C. She could never attempt, let alone produce, such works of art
D. That you are a wonderful and loving grandmother who spends actual quality time with your DGD
E. She wishes deep down inside her sad little heart that she could be just like you

Perhaps you should bake her an elaborate "Thank You" cake!

Completely a jealous reaction. Next time, if you get byotchy comments, just realize that it is from jealously and don't take it personally. That's hard to do when it comes from doing something creative, but obviously they were SO jealous of what you made.

I would just tell them if they wanted to "show off", just take cake decorating classes like I did and they can do the same thing. If they say they don't have time ('cause they're SO BUSY), then that's their problem.

I have gotten a LOT of business from people at one of my bosses kids' school. I have done cakes for teachers and they like it so much they keep ordering things. If you keep bringing in good things, it's a good way to get your name out there. If you bake it, they will come.....

I think they are very cute. Like Chutzpah said, "some people are just tacky". I would love to know how you made them too.

What you have is a couple of Haters. They're yours, for ever and ever.

Katt Williams, my new fave comedian, talks about Haters during his HBO special, The Pimp Chronicles, and how we need Haters in our lives. Look up Katt Williams Haters on YouTube, but beware, his language is very, very adult, and not very PC. If you can get past it long enough to hear what he has to say, you will know what I mean.

I have Haters. Had them all my life. I'm happy I have them. They keep me pushing the envelope of my life.

It amazes me the lack of people not even trying any more to bake something, hey even the sliced ones at least your baking them. When I go to my Grandsons schools it's amazing how many plastic bought cookie boxes I see. Anyway I'm proud you give the child time and pass on your skills. Wish I could see the picture I only see a red X Must be my anti virus thing again.

Ladies like that are just haters (see thread above and I WISH I had You Tube here, I also love Katt Williams, but it's a restricted site at work).

I would hope that they never placed an order from you in the future. They would probably try to pass it off as their own!

I would smile and put a "Oh, these old things! I just threw them together late last night!" then giggle and walk away.

You guys area the best! Just goes to show you, don't mess with ladies that use rolling pins for a living/hobby!
I guess the pic was not working so here it is again. We copied this design by "aztemp" cause DGD fell in love with them. They were very easy, but time consuming, but they came out great.
Anyway, they were baked in cupcake liners like usual, we made them WASC w/raspberry filling and lightly iced w/ Sugershacks Buttercream. Then you take the 3 1/4oz Wilton candy cups, color in every other ridge on the cup red. Slip the cupcake in the candy cup, and use a sticker (computer or we used labels and just wrote Popcorn on them) and put on the front of the cup. Then you just use mini-marshmallows and cut the tops in an X or even in 1/2, but not all the way thru, and just smush them a little and pile on top. We then use just a little Yellow icing and drizzled "Butter" and sprinkled the "salt" using sugar crystals. Then wrapped them in cello bags and tied with school colored ribbons!
