Hey guys!! Thanks so much for all the inputs. I feel the same as everyone else does and my husband has really gotten a laugh out of this one. I have made the cakes for the birthdays in the past and I did get paid for them. I don't know why this one is so different. Can't wait to find out about it.
Also, tonia3604, you asked if it was the same woman who said she would make the cake and asked about the money for the gift. It was the same woman!! Maybe she just wanted him to donate the cake all along instead of having to pay for it. The laugh is on her because this cake won't be donated by this cake baker!!! thumbs_up.gif

Well, you get what you pay for. A $3 cake (with ready made icing - blech!) is not going to be very impressive. Maybe they're just looking for a cheap/quickie sheet cake to hack up and pass around. The cost of ingredients are only part of the equation. Making a decent cake takes time, and time is valuable!

Sounds like she's just kind of ignorant and maybe when she mentioned to your husband about donating the cake it all came out wrong. She should have acknowledged your good work and been somewhat gracious in asking.

I agree.
Sound like there had been talk around the office and some folks couldn't understand why they had to pay a certain price for your cakes when they felt (assumed) the could do the same thing for $3.00.
Then when your husband pointed out that your creations were completely homemede she thought she could still get out of paying and just have you guys donate the cake. It seems that she (or they) just didn't want to pay.
Just wait and see, the cake they wind up with is not going to be anything near the cake you would have provided. And how do you think that will look to the BOSS. 'Why was everyone elses cake so special and this is all I got?'
Or she'll realize it wasn't as simple as she thought and wind up buying one(for more than $3), which I'm sure your husband will get a big kick .
out of.
So, just sit back and wait on the results from your husband. I can almost guarantee that you'll be making next months cake.

why is it that there is always the one person that either wants to suck up, or just plain pee in everyones cheerios?
I would so love to see her $3 cake. Even when I get my box mixes for .88, I still have at least another $10 worth of stuff added to it and that doesn't count my time.

I'm wanting to see this too... I was in management at my old job, they ALWAYS had a cake for everyone else's birthday EXCEPT mine when I was working there (they knew I did cakes). You know when she thinks "he won't notice..." (the boss) um, yea, he'll notice...

Of course, some people's kids... Let her do her "$3 cake" for the next 20 birthdays and discover it's not exactly a $3 cake... And that's the ONLY way she's going to figure that one out... Or maybe after she has to pick up the $3/serving cake because she discovered it wasn't enough cake for $3 she'll be in for a surprise.. icon_twisted.gificon_twisted.gif

Yea, $5-10 into the gift pool is just SO much cheaper than the cake, it'd be stupid not to go that route instead icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

It always makes me wonder if people acting that way can even boil water. Surely if this co-worker made cakes, she would have been more gracious.
I also am looking forward to the photo of the 3.00 cake.
I'll check back later for the update.

I'm on pins and needles - I suppose this co worker has never made a box cake or brownies or cookies from a roll before? - Then she would surely know the cost of a cake is going to be more than $3.00 - Is it evil to wish for failure for someone else? Perhaps it will be a life lesson - but only if she actually learns from it. Can't wait to see the grand dame boss man cake

Hey everyone!! Well guess what? She didn't even make the cake after all. She had one of the other co-worker's mom make an apple cobbler. You should see the pic of this. As soon as we figure out how to download the picture off his phone, it will be posted!! Thanks for all the laughs and comments. At least I know I wasn't the only one that thought this was funny (Ha Ha). I guess the laugh was on her after all. Wonder how long it will take before they give me a call for the next cake? icon_lol.gif

My husband owns a bakery and it's music to my ears listening to all these comments. I constantly hear people complaining about how expensive our cakes our or..how they are bakers too and can make it at home...these people are our main competition..."the home baker". Needless to say, they probably spend much more picking up the ingrediants at the store then they would have picking up a cake from us. How about this, they come into the bakery last minute because they are 1. too tired to bake or too busy 2. messed up their cake and need one quickly 3. burned their cake 4. forgot the "all important occasion".
In todays world it seems price is more important than quality "which is hard to find". Listening to these comments for 4 years has made me a little bitter. I could go on and on....this is my first time on this site...and i agree with all of you.

thanks

I get this all the time in catering. An event for 75 gets cut to 73. Oh wow. What do you expect me to do.... just scoop out 2 spoonfuls of green beans and throw them in the trash and NOT charge you for it? Oh, and I guess we're not going to consider or count Uncle Billy Bob going back for his third round, huh?

That is so true one lady here in our town makes sheet cakes (under $13 mind you) and she actually draws lines on the cake as to where you are to cut it in order to make it come out to exactly the amount of servings she promised if you cut it differently then it wont be as many servings and she refuses to do anything about it. The slices mind you are TINY!

A cobbler? Are you kidding me. Now dont get me wrong I love me some cobbler but no one asks for birthday "cobbler"! I bet it cost more than $3 to make that puppy!!!!! A can of pie filling is more than that nowdays!

I've followed this thread and completely sympathized. I'm in your corner!

But I wanted to add that in my family, people often ask for a pie or a cobbler for their birthday. We have family recipes we DEARLY love. I usually end up with a fantastic pie since I'm allergic to eggs.

So cobbler isn't a bad thing to me, if the birthday boy requested it.
