I just tried the MMF icing out. Still don't like the taste of it. Must be the texture thing. So then I tried to do the faux fondant look instead. It turned out pretty well. I was using regular buttercream icing. Do you HAVE to use the crusting buttercream recipie to get the effect? I haven't tried that recipie out yet. I'm concerned that flour in the icing will make it taste funny. My plan is to do a three tierd stacked wedding cake. I plan on using the MMF for the ribbon that goes around the bottom of each tier. You think I can pull the fondant look off? What have been your experiences with the faux fondant look?
I've never tried the faux fondant recipe. I have used the crusting buttercream .. I can get mine really smooth and even roll the edges down to make it appear to have a fondant effect ..
I know what you mean about the MMF .. I think more than anything when people say they don't like it, it's the texture thing .. did you add any flavoring to your MMF? That will help with the taste.
I did add some vanilla to the MMF but I don't think it helped much. Maybe I didn't add enough. Can you add flavoring to the store bought fondant?
you can add any flavor you want to the store bought fondant....it'll still taste like nasty plastic!

I like the taste of Faux Fondant. But then again.. anything with sugar in it I'll like it. Use to faux fondant icing recipe. You can't even taste the flour in the icing. Try it out~ Faux fondant is just like doing BC. No big difference. You still have to smooth it & you still have to let it dry a little.
So, is there any reason why you have to use the crusting buttercream recipie? Whats wrong with using regular buttercream? Does it not hold up well?
I did this faux fondant cake with my normal buttercream... http://cakecentral.com/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/15524/Araceli_wedding_cake.jpgIt crusts slightly. I really don't think you need to use a special buttercream to do this...It just takes some practice. I used strips of acetate paper to do the edges and then I used pieces of paper towel to finish it off. It took me forever to do this the first time, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy.
Wow Tami! Your cake turned out great! I just told the girl I work with what I was going to do to her wedding cake. I just don't have it in me to give her a cake that tastes funny! She's fine with me doing the buttercream! Thank God!
