I didn't realize that was the season finale either! That was quick!

I just finished watching last night's episode (DVR) and that pink cake was horrible! Way too much going on there! I felt sorry for the bride--she wanted small and elegant. Of course she was happy at the end so I guess that's what matters.

Those sugar glass balls were so cool--I love Lauri!

And of course the cake the Cake Girls did was really neat! A lot going on but still really pretty!

Yeah, and it'd be REAL nice if one was me! lol

My DVR description of the show said season finale and they certainly seemed to have some "parting comments" from 2 of the bakeries.

OMG! You guys crack me up! Its everything you want to say but are afraid to!
I can understand why they chose Cake Girls because most of their cakes are really fantastic. I have yet to see a Cake Diva cake that I can say I like and the people even less. Its just hard for me to focus on a cake when you got one constantly crying over something stupid, the other one looking like she should be a bouncer and the other one that when she talks she tips her head from side to side and your just waiting for the "teehee" afterwards. I like the simplicity of the cakes from Cake Atelier. But you could just tell that there was too much friction between the two and not to mention they had a bakery on a third floor with no elevator? and then taking taxis to deliver a cake? Just seemed like they hadnt thought things threw when they started out. Their both really talented and im sure they will do great on their own but sometimes talent alone isnt enough to keep a business going. You have to have some business sense or atleast someone running it that has it.
But either way, I still watched it because I liked seeing what other people put out there and it was nice to have another show besides Ace of Cakes.

Ok, first of all......I am NOT that skilled of a cake decorator.......I'm just a beginner..........but Lord have mercy.................those Cake Diva cakes are fugly!!!!!! That pink monster they did last night was awful!!!!!!!!!!
And I'm not surprised that they married each other.......I kinda got the impression 'something' was going on between them..........and the one who sees the clients..........well....feminine is not the word to use.................
and I knew the Cake Atelier girls were destined to separate..........but like most everyone else, I love the CakeGirls.........I guess because they are 'normal'.........but hey.............what's normal? ~~ it's just a setting on a washing machine.....................
oh well...........

LOVE that idea! I think it would be a real kick to get an inside peek at Kerry Vincent when she's doing a wedding cake. Or better yet...I think one of these days they should do a cake challenge with the JUDGES as the contestants. Let's see what Kerry can do under the pressure and scrutiny. Or Keegan Gerhard, Patrick Coston, etc. Let some of the past contestants be the judges. I'd pay to watch James Roselle or Buddy Valastro judge Kerry.

It really is amazing how people who are not in the industry think that you can just pull a cake out of nowhere in minutes for their every need.

Well, I agree that people have unrealistic expectations of the amount of time it takes to create a wedding cake, but sometimes they can't help it. I know, because I was one of those brides. LOL

I didn't make cakes back then. I found a cake in a book that I absolutely loved, and a friend of my husband's family offered to make it for me. I didn't know her, but since she was a friend of his family and several people assured me she made "great" cakes, I agreed. She wouldn't hear of letting us pay her either, it was to be her gift to us. The cake was fairly simple, but it was carved. It was to look like a bell. I left all the flavor decisions up to her. I told her use whatever would work best for her so that she could pick a cake that would carve easily. It was supposed to be smallish, and DH & I built a stand with a double heart for the cake to sit on, it was 3d & we would attach a ribbon to the top of the cake and to the stand so it looked like the cake was hanging from the hearts. I am not sure if I am describing this so that you will understand or not. lol

Anyway, The cake itself was simple, so I had faith that she would be able to do it. it had a textured icing also, so no fondant or buttercream smoothing was required. She had a conflict, so we had to pick the cake up from her house the night before the wedding. We walked in to pick it up and... I SWEAR, I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP, there was a goat sitting right beside my cake. A LIVE GOAT! The cake was sitting there, a foot away from the goat. I felt the tears start to well up, and then I saw the cake. I know she meant well, but it was nothing like it was supposed to be. The icing "texture" looked like it was swirls made with a fork. They loaded the cake into the car and my dh started to back out of the driveway and the whole cake fell apart. Her support system was not designed properly. We drove the two blocks back to our house and I cried my eyes out the rest of the night.

I got up the next morning at 5am & called a local bakery (really a donut shop) that made wedding cakes. I told them what happened and they said their cake lady was off that day. I was so upset they told me they would call her and call me back. The cake lady called me 30 min. later to ask what my wedding colors were. She went in on her day off and made the most beautiful three tier white cake ever, or it sure seemed like it. In my eyes she saved my wedding. She went in and had the cake at the reception and set up by 4pm. She was my hero, and I still get kinda sappy when I think about it.

So, SOMETIMES it isn't lack of planning. I hope someday I can pay it forward and "save" someone at the last minute like she did for me!

Wow! That's quite a story. It's bad enough to go into someone's home and find dogs or cats in the vicinity of the cake, but a GOAT? Who has a live goat inside their house???

I'm so happy you were able to get a nice cake on such short notice. Sometimes disasters do happen that require last-minute cakes.

Did the friend who did the cake go to the wedding and, if she didn't, did she inquire about the cake or is she, to this day, not aware of what had happened?

I love the idea of throwing the Food Network judges into the Challenge. There are so many times you hear their comments and wonder what they would do under such pressure. Also with the "decoratorsidis" that is mentioned so much about how too much is done. I think that some of them should practice what they preach!
I was wondering what they were going to do with that new David Tutara show coming on at the same time. They will probably make this show seasonal like they do with Platinum Brides and the other one Big Fat Expensive Wedding.
I have to say that Im hooked on watching them though. I just love to see how other people work and what their solutions to different problems are.

LOL - Alright, now, don't bash me because I'm gonna be REALLY honest here. I don't like her because 1) she's VERY abrasive and 2) why would you have someone who looks like her be the front of the house? She looks like she never bathes and I can almost smell her nasty body smell thru the TV. You don't have someone like her meeting with clients. You have someone professional looking, CLEAN, and friendly. She's just nasty all the way around.

My husband even commented on how a business could have a representative like her when first impressions are so important.

Well...just in case you get a lot of bashing...I'll just go ahead and say that I completely agree. It may be harsh but it's true. And my husband agrees also.

Bash away...................Earlier in this thread I commented on how I wanted to send her a gift card to my Salon.......just let me at those eyebrows, pleeeeeeeease! Doesn't the show have hair and make-up in their budget?

Before I watched this show, I never heard of these woman, but if I walked into their bakery and was greeted by her, I'd NEVER eat anything from there. Her entire appearance is unprofessional and sloppy, not what you want to see around food.

Now for the cakes this week......it was the first time I was disappointed in the Cakegirls cake. I thought the edges (corners) of the boxes were very sloppy. I would have liked the diamonds if they were clear, they just looked like big white blobs to me.

Loved Lauri's cake, I won't say the Cakeatelier's cake, because Ruth really didn't do much, does she even know how to bake? What's this that it's the biggest cake they ever did? 225 people was considered huge for them. icon_confused.gificon_eek.gif

Hated Cake Diva's creation as usual, although I do think it was a little neater than some of their others. But, I was a little concerned that it was wobbling when they set it up. That cake would have been perfect in the "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" movie.

O.K......I'm ready to be yelled at now by the Amazing Cake Police. icon_biggrin.gif

dkelly, you made me laugh - thanks! icon_smile.gif

Did anyone else notice that when the Cakegirls were covering their square cakes with fondant, that they smoothed down the sides of the cake but then cut the excess fondant off at the corners instead of smoothing it down so you have one piece of fondant smoothly covering the entire cake? I've seen other professional cake decorators do this and I was taught that you smooth down the four corners and not cut it to fit since you'd then have a seam going down every corner of the cake, and smoothing together a cut seam isn't that easy so I wonder if they ever get them really smooth after that. I guess since they put those gumpaste "walls" up around the cakes to make the box it probably didn't matter in this instance, but I've seen them do that on Ace of Cakes, too.

Oh my gosh, I was thinking the exact same thing. At first I was thinking how can she cut that its going to look sloppy. Then they covered it and I realized it didnt matter. I saw on Ace of Cakes they did the same thing, and it was pretty smooth after. How did they get it so smooth??? hmmm. I wish I can know this secret!

The main thing I noticed last night was that all 3 bakeries call tiers "layers"...do they not know the difference? They say tier sometimes, and then call it a layer when they are constructing. It's as annoying as hearing people say "fawn-dawn" for fondant. I just wanted to smack 'em!

Funny you mention the eyebrows. If you go onto the WE talk site there was someone commenting about that they couldnt watch it because of this woman and her eyebrows and that she didnt know what the word feminine was. I dont think that she necessarily has to wear makeup and have her hair curled or anything but I do agree that she needs to keep a neater appearance for greeting people in the front.
I also couldnt believe all the dents in that pink cake! I was looking at thinking that how could they have celebrity clientele and let things walk out the door looking like that? She mentioned that they do things differently in LA but do they really compromise THAT much and let cakes leave so sloppy?
I really like how normal Cake Girls are and I do have to say that this cake although it was really nice, that it could of had some more punch to it. Marina Souza did a cake similiar to that one and it just had so much more sparkle to it.
And I think if we were during crunch time and someone was throwing sugar balls at me I would of flipped out! I can understand where both of them were coming from, Laurie wants everything to be perfect and Ruth wanted to be punctual. But one comment on here about how that it was the biggest cake they've taken on and was thought that was strange. I can understand them turning down orders for larger cakes because they really had no way to get the thing down the stairs and deliver it! Yikes!

I thought it was something like a "finale" because of how the Cake Diva lady was going on and on at the end. And the same for the Cake Girls chic..
I had read somewhere that Ruth on Cake Ateile? had training in her flowers by Nicholas Lodge and Israel in New York.. I guess that snobbishness ran onto her. I didn't like how she talked "down" to everyone. And her Manager, when they rolled their eyes when Lauri asked them to make extra dots. If I had something like that working for me, they would be seeing nothing but the door as they were leaving. Doesn't or didn't Ruth every get it.., Lauri was a big help. I never saw Ruth doing any baking, only the flower making and getting real good at rolling her eyes and making her sappy not welcomed comments.
The Cake Girls, I too, liked the ring box cake, but agree, those edges perhaps could have been tightened up more. I saw small gaps. And that giant ring..maybe also, made out of sugar. Then when I saw them putting the glue on the bottom of those cakes, my first thought was, is that the cake board underneath the cake? I didn't understand why she snapped at her sister.. Anyone know? I know there is alot of concentration going on in creating a work of art on that cake, but holy cow! She seemed to not appreciate that dude who stayed late to help cover the cakes with the fondant. She was like; "ok, you can go now"....
Now, onto the Cake Divas... Someone please give the chic a FREE trip to the beauty shop, get some highlights on that hair, trim it up or layer it, and do something with those mammoth eyebrows!!
I didn't like the pink cake either. I too thought it was really sloppy. And when the bride and her groom intended came in, he immediately I thought was going into Groomzilla mode. It was her bride cake, her day, her colors, etc..
I didn't like all that to do da's on that cake, those edges pinched and then covered in those gold leaves. I saw also when they were putting the tiers onto each other at the bakery, they didn't put a good seam on them. I saw large gaps.
Did they cover the cake in fondant, then paint that whole thing in pink?, it was a tad darker pink instead of a hint of pink. Did you all see when Marc, beloved comic Marc, was doing his scroll work on the topper, how he was rushing it! Uuuuggglly, fugly, yuck! And I didn't like that huge gold swags going on the cake, way way too busy. That yellow detail on the bottom tiers, maybe should have been a soft pink detail. That cake was HUGE though!!
I also saw on the tiers before the toppers, on the fondant covering, it was bunched up at the bottom, like someone forgot to smooth it out.
And when RedHead lady said, no one, no one in the bakery wanted to help with the pink cake. Maybe because it was a LAST MINUTE ORDER cake!, and they were working on other projects.. I'd be ticked off too!!

Sugar Frosted, I thought I was the only one that got erked when someone called it FAWN-DANT. Everytime someone says that I want to scream! I dont know why it bothers me so much but they chop up the word like its two seperate words and its not! Maybe its just me, maybe its the European way to say it like tomato tomatto. Potato, Pottatto, or here in Maryland Ambulance is pronounced amb -al- antz. (really hard to spell it how they say it)
I dont think the lady at Cake Divas thinks of a salon. I dont know how to say it without offending someone about it. Lets just say that some people are more feminine and some are more masculine. She probably poors herself into her job and doesnt think much about her looks. She obviously has some kind of good business sense if they get celebrity clientele in there.

She didn't go to the wedding, but she does know that the cake fell apart. When we came home we sat it on the kitchen table. The next day after DH & I were both gone to do last minute things her daughter came by the house to drop off some plain angel food cakes they had also baked for the wedding. My mom let her in with the cakes and she freaked out when she saw the cake sitting there like that. Mom told her what happened, and that we had managed to get another cake. She yelled at my mom and wanted to know why we hadn't called them to come "fix" it. Now, I will admit that back then I didn't know much about cakes, but I PROMISE that there was no way to fix this cake. It was pretty much half a cake and half a pile of crumbs.

I never mentioned it to her, and she never mentioned it to me. I figure it is better that way. Like I said before, I was very appreciative that she offered to make it in the first place, I sure wouldn't ever complain about it!

I'm so glad you brought up the breaking of the sugar bubbles! I turned to my daughter (10) and asked if she knew why that wasn't a good idea. She said, "she should make the others first, that way if they don't turn out as good as the first ones, she'll still have something to put on the cake!" So if a ten year old knows that..... but I do love Lauri, so I don't hold it against her. I know we all get obsessive with our cakes sometimes.

Or........if your going to spray stuff, spray 1, let it dry and see if it looks good, THAN spray the rest. Why spray ALL of them at once, than you're screwed like she was if it doesn't come out as planned. Would have saved her a lot of time. Honestly though I was hoping that she was gonna start whipping them at Ruth's back, that would have capped off the season. icon_biggrin.gif

I dont understand why she used the lacquer spray on them in the first place. The sugar is already shiny and the spray tends to leave things with a bit of a yellow tint to it. But also, the whole safety factor of her doing that. The shards are VERY sharp and if one of them would of bounced and hit someone in the face it would of meant a trip to the ER! But I was scratching my head more at the fact that these two who had culinary training didnt think about the factor of having a bakery on a third floor of a building with no elevator! I think that would of been an issue in the beginning!
Ok, and Im French and I still cant stand listening to people say Fawn-dant!

I see where you're coming from, but some of my best clients are men. They come every 3 wks. for a haircut and some have manicures/pedicures and waxes every 2 wks. These are professional straight men, they really care about their looks, it's great. Some are way more picky than females and they love being pampered.

i think i posted this before.. but i dont think the show is entirely truthful.. it seemed that a lot of the orders were rehearsed and that some of the customers seemed like they were acting.. maybe they wanted to showcase a certain cake whether or not someone ordered it.. only a very few show the bride/groom or customers with other people at the party... theres a weird soundtrack in the background when most of them are cutting the cake and you never see the whole venue... and i think some of the friction is an act too.. cuz cake baking would be pretty darn boring to watch if you didnt have the drama...
