Should I Redo This Cake? Need Tips On Re-Icing
Decorating By Trixyinaz Updated 10 Sep 2008 , 4:06pm by tonedna
This is for a business meeting that is taking place out of office in the afternoon. Why I didn't think of this BEFORE I decorated it, but everyone who eats this will walk away with a black tongue and teeth
Should I remove all the black (I'd keep the white space) and replace it with a gray color icing? For the stand, I was thinking I might color some fondant gray and put it over my RK's instead of BC...hoping it might look better.
Has anyone ever scraped off icing and re-iced? Is it a pain in the butt? I can't remake the cake as I work during the day and it's due tomorrow morning so scraping off the black and reicing with a different color is my only option.
I would really leave it. When you start redoing things like that, it leads to problems. Don't worry about it-it seems fine!
I've iced cakes in black lots of times. (Just look at some in my gallery.) I've never had any complaints about the black teeth. haha. Just leave it. It's fine. You're just asking for a big ole' mess if you scrape it off.
Trying to scrape off all of that black is going to be a HUGE mess! You'll never get it all off and then if you try to re-ice it a different color the black will just most likely mix in or bleed through. I would leave it alone as a lesson learned. Surely anyone who eats that will eat around the black....
I think it looks great and since I'm sure it tastes great, noone will complain about the teeth!! (Besides, I think that's why toothbrushes were invented)
I would leave it be IMHO. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. (The cake looks really cool by the way!)
It's so cute!!! I wouldn't mess with it either. No one is going to complain and even if their teeth are black, it's not going to last that long. They'll be more impressed about the way the cake looks & tastes than the fact they have a colored mouth
Is it pure black coloring or did you start with chocolate icing first? If you started with choc icing first, you probably wont have too many problems.
Oh heck no! That cake is great! If there are black teeth, everyone will have them It looks great! I'd most definitely leave it.
Ditto - leave it alone. I think it looks great & there is no reason to put yourself through the extra stress.
this cake looks great....leave it alone...if anything everyone should have a black tongue....if there teeth are black....well then that just means they didn't brush very well!!!!!!! hahahahahahaha great job~! leave it alone!!!!!!
It looks great! Just grab a couple packs of orbit gum on the way into the office. remember the commercial about the dirty mouth... "clean it with orbit"... Just hand everyone a wet papertowel and a stick of gum on their way out the door : )
If I had a nickel for every time I scraped down a cake......
I say leave it alone. It looks awesome. If they don't want to eat the black icing, they can eat around it. You did a great job and it would be a shame to redo it.
WOW! Thanks for all the nice compliments. I'm really not a big fan of this cake other than my logo work and all my fondant pieces. It just looks way sloppy to me - maybe I'll just redo the border then to a rope border.
Anyway, I didn't realize it would be that difficult to re-ice. I am so glad I asked. I wasn't going to and probably would have SHOT myself in the midst of scraping off the black. Yes, lesson learned on this one. If for a business event....do gray.
No, the icing is vanilla BC. I first added chocolate brown and then some Americolor's Black to acheveive this color.
Thanks again for all your comments and discouraging me from re-icing the cake.
Lilmansmum - I took a peek at your gallery, and you certainly do have quite a few BLACK cakes in there. I guess it's not that unusual to have a black cake, huh?
And yes, I guess they will know who is a good tooth brusher or not....I don't recall my teeth turning black, but my tongue sure was as I was eating the left over icing last night.
Thanks again for responding so quickly. I listened to all of you and DID NOT redo the cake. I'm glad I didn't....less stress, but mainly b/c I worried for nothing. They LOVED it! Here is their email to me after their meeting.
Hi Vicki,
The cake was AWESOME!!! It was a huge success, everyone loved it. Then, they tasted it and loved it even more! Thank you so much for doing this for us, it was great.
Laura
