Attaching Candy Molds To Crusted Buttercream?
Decorating By mlharvell Updated 26 Aug 2008 , 5:10pm by kimblyd
What is the best way to attach candy molded chocolate to already crusted buttercream? Will the grease from the buttercream break down the chocolate and make it wilt? Please help.
Thanks!
Not sure how molded chocolate "wilts", but here's a cake where I added green leprechaun clovers, made of molded chocolate, onto the cake. (and when I see the term "molded chocolate", I'm thinking of the kind that is made in the clear plastic candy molds. If you're referring to something else, my apologies.) Icing was crusted. I just put a blop of buttercream icing on the back of the clover, like a glue, and attached it to the side of the cake. Held up just fine. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1179060
I've done the same thing; just use bc to "glue" chocolate to the cake. I don't know how to link to photos (sorry!), but check out my photos...the one with the Wizard of Oz and the wedding cake have chocolate molds.
I have attached candy molds before and just used extra bc. Use a small tip like a 4 to pipe some on the back and apply. I did have any problems.

I have attached molded candy melts and molded candy clay to crusted BC many times. I just use a little bit of BC and press gently. If you press too hard you will get an ugly bulge around your candy.
One piece of advice (learned the hard way): Make sure the BC is firmly adhered to the cake (as in use a spatula for the whole process, not the icing tip!) and most importantly--try to keep your candy thin and light and you shouldn't have any problems.
Believe me, if you try to attach four pound (well maybe not that heavy) candy swags to BC, they WILL slide down.
