i think it turned out pretty good. my lacework turned blue because my mom left the blinds open and then in the morning the sun hit the cake and phaded the color... but you can only really tell in the pictures. and anyways the bride loved it. so did her mom, even though the mom thought i was going to totally destroy it because im "only 15"... dumb a**...(edited by mod) serves her right for thinking i cant make a freakin cake!

You know what, I'm a little tired of this attitude. That cake stopped being great when that topper was placed on it. If you sell cakes, you have a duty to the design AND to the client. So, yes the client requested that topper, but you did have a choice.
Push yourself creatively to put an end to those tacky toppers. The client isn't always right, and whether you sell $1.50 per serving cakes or $15.00 per serving cakes, your professionalism is at stake.
At the very least, the cake should have been designed around the topper instead of marrying (a pun!) two incongruous elements.
I hate that some carebears will only tell you "great job" but the reality is: those tacky toppers must die.
I realize you may be a home baker, but you are very talented.
I suggest:
1) design a cake that needs no topper
2) offer to place the ceramic thingy on a separate small cake for display next to your masterpiece
3) design a topper yourself
4) design around the topper... it's too much whimsy on a otherwise elegant cake
5) above all, have the balls to tell your client that a ceramic topper is hardly ever appropriate. It's not 1950.

i've seen many styles of this topper and though some don't like it- its still very popular if not becoming more popular in this day and age. in fact the bride i'm doing a cake for right now (is having one reception in one town for family who can't travel to the Other reception) is using a similar topper (differently dressed bride and groom) on both cakes.

I've done plenty of wedding cakes where the bride requested something "tacky". My worst was putting a homer and marge simpson as the cake topper which in my opinion completely ruined the cake. However, it's the bride's day and if she wants a tacky cake topper, then so be it. It's not up to us to dictate who should get what. The girl merely wanted to show off her first cake (not cake topper) and clearly was proud of what she had accomplished and wanted to share it with everyone. We cannot control what accessories the customer wants on the cake. Besides, everyone knows the design of the cake is a reflection of the cake decorator and any accessories are a result of the bride and/or groom.
Your comment was extremely harsh and may I add out of line. Comments like this is what ruins the fun of websites such as these. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all...period. Learn it. Live it.

So if you get asked to be a bridesmaid/maid of honor for a wedding and the dress the bride picks out is ugly, you're going to say that to the bride? You're going to say "Nope, not gonna wear that. Everyone knows this look is dated and tacky and I refuse to wear it. I don't care if you're paying for the dress or not, I'm not going to wear that thing to your wedding." Or if you're helping plan the wedding and you don't like the colors she's chosen, or the venue or music selection. You're going to pout and stomp your feet until you get her wedding to look how you want it to?
It's not your wedding cake. It's hers. If you don't like the final end product, then don't post the pictures online! When other people ask to see your work, show them other stuff. Easy as that. Or, take a pic before the topper went on and display that picture. Everybody knows the topper is something the couple picked out, not you the baker.
At the end of the day, it's the bride's day and you just made her extremely happy with a gorgeous cake and the "cute, tongue in cheek" topper that she spent a long time picking out. She loves it, her guests will see the delight on her face when they see her see it. Nothing is more beautiful than a happy, smiling bride in love with her new husband.

I haven't said anything harsh. Maybe you should go back and reread both of my posts. Criticism was asked for and honest criticism and some advice was given. None of it personal. I'll say it again, excellent cake. OP needs to get into a shop or a school.

Those toppers are ugly and it's a shame anyone would ruin their cakes with one. It's amazing anyone would champion their use.
UR just a carebear, and I boldly say it IS our job to dictate what looks good on OUR cakes. Otherwise, you're just a decorator.

Wow! Who cares if she has a topper? You know what I'm sick of? People judging other people like somehow they're better. If I want a topper on my cake, that's my business. I would be really p***ed if I had my heart set on a topper and my cake decorator told me it was tacky or wouldn't do what I wanted. I guess I march to the beat of my own drum. I do what makes ME happy. Not other people.
...personally if I wanted a topper on my wedding cake and the person I was going to HIRE, told me NO, I'd find another baker.

As far as cake toppers: The customer is always right. I have had brides give me these HUGE cake toppers for a small cake, gotten cake toppers that don't match the design, had them send me horrible colors for their ribbon to go around the cake, had them pick out flowers that look like weeds or are HUGE and don't go., toppers made of toys, cartoon characters, and adult things that make you blush...And they all loved their cakes. Brides spend a lot of time picking out what they want for thier wedding, a lot of money, a lot of thought...give them what they want.

I personally hate toppers, but it's the brides cake! I made a cake with a tacky topper last weekend. The bride's friend added the topper herself and it ended up falling over and crushing the top tier. Not my problem, but I did end up going to fix it for her. It wasn't the bride's fault and I felt badly for her, but I should have charged a fee. The bride's dad told me that he was wishing that the topper broke when it fell because he hated it, too!
