I work fulltime and I have been decorating cakes and cupcakes for about 4 years. When I do cakes, it seems like I am busy for 2 nights. I am starting to get burnt out and I sooo don't want to do that. Work has been very stressful. I have been toying with the idea of just offering cupcakes. They are a lot easier to do because you can get them done in one night and they are quite versatile. I was just looking for some feedback.

Hi It was good to hear your thoughts on moving away from cakes and cc's to just cc's. Im just about to move the other way - ive been doing cupcakes for friends for a while, then people from work wanted orders and then people starting asking for cakes and i thought why not - i found you guys and realised that ive got a long way to go to be a good cake decorator (particularly modelling) but ive kinda got the bug to learn. Anyway, i work fulltime and am on my own with 2 fantastic kids and i just want to be cautious before i find myself with orders that im not excited about!!! however maybe i need to get the experience first and then see how i go........what time is it now in the states? it 10.45 here and i promised myself i would go to bed at 10 but im just addicted to the posts and reaching out to likeminded people

Since I am just getting back to this....had to go back to my wonderful work, it is 5:30 p.m. I know this site is addicting lol. I just love it. Don't get me wrong I love love doing cakes, it's just I wear myself out. I usually bake one night and freeze...make frosting, fillings, etc. the next night and decorate on the third night. The kitchen is usually trashed and I don't get much else done....
aileenlnbh...i agree with you 100%. it is great to chat with likeminded people

I hope one day I'm "not very talented" like you! Your cakes are great. I was just looking over them and I have a couple of them in my fav's. Follow your dream and open up that cupcake bar!!!!!

Awww. thanks, you made my day!!!

As for what a cupcake bar is: it's just a little shop that sells only specialty cupcakes--top notch ingredients and seating available to just sit and read and eat. Like a Starbucks only with cupcakes.
The place I am thinking of is in a beautiful brick buiding with a coffeeshop there already, and an elementary school down the street (thinking of them buying for the class!)
It's in an up and coming area with some higher-end housing going up around it. It would be a place moms could stop off with kids after school and enjoy down time, or since there's also soccer fields near there they could bring the team in after for some yummy deserts after a big win.
I'm a long way from doing this, I don't even know if it's practical but I am going to practice and I joined the CCCC which tries out new recipes every week so maybe in a year or so I can do it. I am looking layoff in the eye right now so it would be nice to have something to look forward to!
Keep us posted how it works out for you!

I'm opening up a cupcakery within the next 8-12 months, still looking for a perfect location...rent at the beach is high, but LOTS of tourists as well as locals go there as well. I only do cakes for my kids and my hubby & mom. Everything else is cupcakes. I only own 3 round pans, and a couple of charector pans that I've only used maybe once.
I already have a menu ready, and it makes it really easy, I'm soooo much better at cupcakes then cake, and it's easier for clients to grab a cupcake instead of trying to get a knife and cutting cake, then kids fighting over who got the biggest piece, and having to have plates, forks, ect...... Cupcakes all you need is the cuppy & a napkin
You could always try it, and if it doesnt work for you, you can always go back to offering cakes.

The Cupcake Bar idea sounds great! I would love to do that myself, selling cofee, cookies and cupcakes. I think the location could make or break you, but if you had a cute space and were in a 'happening" neighborhood, it could be a gold mine.
I asked you what you meant because when I saw "Bar", i was thinking of a salad bar, and I thought maybe you were going to have people frost and top their own cupcakes, or something.
