I am sorry if this has been asked before. I tried to do a search but didn't come up with anything.

My question is - how are cupcake cakes served at a wedding? Do guests just casually come up and take a cupcake or (and I think this is the right way) are they actually served on a plate after dinner? It might depend on the kind of wedding, but I am looking for the most traditional way.

I guess the other option is taking a cupcake on your way home from the wedding (like how some people have cake sliced and in a bag for on the way out).

Thanks!

I suppose it depends on what the bride wants - I just made cupcakes for a wedding and the couple had them placed on the table around their cake with small desert plates for their guests to take them theirselves. They just had me make a sign explaining which cupcake design was what flavor as they had 3 different flavors of cupcakes.

I've never done a cupcake wedding, although I do think they can be pretty. I did do a wedding once where the bride had the small wilton cupcake stand (holds 13) on each one of the individual tables(there were 35, 10 man tables) I did the 2 inch round topped by a 1 inch round individual cakes with poured white fondant with tip 13 shell borders with a black fancy "S" that stood up in royal icing on the top. then they had a 10 inch and 8 inch stacked that looked just like the mini cakes for the cutting ceremony, and to keep the top for their anniversary. The bride worked on getting those stands for 3 months before the wedding, she would get Michaels coupons from every one and get friends to pick them up. I think she ended up getting them for around $5.00 each. When the wedding was over she had 35 of those things, she gave me 25 of them and gave the rest to friends. I think she kept 1 or 2. So they were served at the tables.

I just did my first cupcake wedding last night. It was for a friend and I also attended the wedding. After the Bride and Groom cut the 6" topper cake for pictures everyone was invited to help themselves to a cupcake. It was a small wedding, only about 75 people. People took a cupcake at their own leisure and by the way most people had an average of 2 cupcakes a piece. The bride ordered 125 cupcakes and that was just about right. I am going to try to post a picture of the cupcakes and the stand that they were displayed on. The stand was made by a friend of the groom. As a bonus they gave me the stand!!!

I've done cupcake weddings in just about every fashion imaginable.

The most popular is to stack them on a tower and let guests help themselves.

We've also had them passed by waiters, on the individual tables, plated as place cards.... just about any scenario you can think of, we've done.

So in general if the guests are allowed to walk up to a table and help themselves to the cupcakes, chances are they'll get more than one correct? Would you still recommend the bride and groom ordering more cupcakes than the number of guests if they're putting the cupcakes at each table as a centerpiece?

I have done several weddings with cupcakes..I find in most cases guests will wait until the bride/groom cut the cake(if you have one for them to cut) then it ends up a free for all guests to grab a cupcake..I have always done at least 4 flavors so find guests like to try at least 2 options. Most of my brides order at least 1 for every guest (some guests don't stay for cake or not interested) and I include usually a dozen mini's in each flavor and so that covers the extras people eat..never ran out before everyone got a cupcake..I will say I have a hard time when guests grab a cupcake before the bride/groom cut their cake..I think it should follow the same rules as regular wedding cake unless announced. I mean you wouldn't grab a slice yourself of wedding cake before the bride/groom got theirs right? I dunno its a pet peeve lol

I did a three tiered wedding cake 2 years ago along with 200 cupcakes. The bride envisioned that the guests would take a cupcake home as a favour after they all enjoyed the cake. The cupcakes were displayed on a very large tiered stand on a table beside the wedding cake. The venue was a posh country club and one would have expected the guests would have some idea of how to comport themselves. Not so much.

The guests entered the room, rushed to the cupcakes and began devouring them even before sitting down to dinner! The wedding planner, venue director, caterer and I, the baker, just stood in awe at the stampede. The bride's mother just shook her head and said, "I guess the service was a tad too long!".

@ SouthernCross: Yeah I just don't get the etiquette behind that whole scenario..The few weddings I did, at least it was only a few guests grabbing here and there..oh but once the bride and groom cut their individual cake..the crowd swarmed the cupcakes.. Regardless, its tacky and rude and I just don't get people sometimes!
