I have seen a recipe that said to use popcorn salt and one that said to use regular salt. If I use regular salt, will the RBC be grainy/gritty tasting?
I can't find popcorn salt anywhere.
I have always used regular salt. Never found the icing to be gritty. That's just my experience.
If there is any liquid in the recipe, dissolve the salt in it - make sure it is dissolved before adding to the rest of the ingredients.
I use popcorn salt. It is a much finer grain than regular salt. If is usually found in the aisle with the popcorn, near the popcorn oil.
I saw popcorn oil in ONE of the FIVE grocery stores I looked in - but no popcorn salt to be found.
I hear you about popcorn salt! I looked in so many stores (mind you this was in Canada) and could find lots, unfortunately they were all flavoured (ie cheddar, jalepenos (sp??) and who wants those flavours on cakes!!
I think I'm going to bring a zip lock baggie and smuggle some out of the theater the next time I go.
BUT - I did make the rolled buttercream tonight and it came out/tasted fine with regular salt.
i get mine at the wal mart........ 3 3/4 oz. size.... along with all the other salts... morton popcorn salt
I found popcorn salt at Super Target on the spice isle near the other salts. Have never seen it at a grocery store though.
Just ask the store manager of your favorite grocery stores. Things like that can be ordered if they dont stock it on a normal basis.
I know a few of the managers at the store now. It's helpful to be able to ask about items you hear about of see somewhere and know you can request them.
Good Luck.

Ahh shucks!!! I was just there tonight. Hopefully I'll remember to check and see if they carry it next time I'm there!
You can whiz up some regular salt in a food processor to make it finer grained - good substitute for popcorn salt.

Thanks for the tip!
A whirl in the coffee grinder will do the trick. I have one that is just for spices...
