I am throwing a Toga party in September and love all the wine bottle cakes! My question for those who have done them.
HOW?? I can make the half bottle with fondant over a real bottle. But can not figure how you get it to look glossy, like real glass.
Please can someone help with directions for bottles or any tips!
Thank you so much.

For gloss you can either steam the fondant or coat it with shortening for a sheen. Of course it won't look translucent but the shiny effect will accomplish the right "look".

I could have sworn there was a tutorial on here somewhere with instructions on the gumpaste wine bottle using the technique you mention (real bottle as a former), you should search the forum archives...I'll post it if I ever come across it. thumbs_up.gif

I'd use gumpaste by the way, it will dry hard as a rock and be much less fragile than fondant. Or 50/50 fondant/gumpaste. Good luck, sounds like a fun project!

When I made my last one I painted it with gel color mixed with vodka and it stayed shiny. You could also use confectioners glaze or even piping gel thinned.
