Just got a request for a motorcycle groom's cake BUT they need it to feed 225 people!!! How the heck would I do that? Make it life size? HELP! Oh, and they want it to be all motorcycle, not on a sheet cake or anything....
Also, are we talking a Harley or a bullet bike, or something in between? I can't imagine how you'd structure it to be stable. Hopefully Doug will see this and can help.
Did they say what their budget is? I wouldn't even consider it for less then $8-$10 serving and maybe more depending on your location.
On Mikes amazing cakes web site he has an almost life size well not totally but huge racecar cake. If you are stuck maybe you can email him for details. I am thinking though you will need alot of solid structure and rkt Good luck on this one, I would definately be scared of this one
Not sure what to tell you, but there is a website you could check out:
http://www.twowheelweddings.com/motorcycle-wedding-cakes.php
Maybe you could get some ideas there! If it is a Harley, maybe you could talk them into the HD cake! It's AWESOME!
Let us know what you decide to do! Good luck!
Susan
Can u ask them if u can make a sheet cake underneath & make it look like a road?
I was thinking the same thing...I can't think of any other way it would even come close to the amount of cake you would need. Maybe make the motorcycle as more of a "showpiece".
I'd get some additional details from them to make sure the "grooms cake" needs to feed that many people. Are they not having a brides cake?? How many people are attending the wedding? They may not understand how the cake thing works... ie brides cake feeds X, grooms cake feeds Y which equals 225 guests!
Look in the cc galleries under trucks, automobiles. There are several motorcycle cakes in there that may be a great help on this. It might at least give you some ideas of where to start. Good luck.
There are couple of things you could do.
If you use round cakes stacked to build up the wheels and make the wheels basically towers then build a bridge across to support the rest.
Just thinking outloud.
What about doing accesories that are made out of cake like a round helmut, maybe some saddle bags thrown around..just trying to get you some "extra" cake without it having to be on the physical motorcycle.
Hope you're charging BIG bucks for the cake. Imagine just transporting it.
They are having a wedding cake feed 200+ people and a total of 400+ people so they wanted half groom cake, half wedding cake servings! I know...it's totally crazy to think it being done...and by ME! AAAAHHH
I'm charging $3 a serving. I thought that was high! In my area...it kinda is!
Perhaps I should turn it down?
Oh, darlin', $3/serving is what I charge for plain 'ole buttercream only!! Don't you DARE try to do this for $3!!!!!!
Sounds like they have Duff-itis. So if they want a Duff cake, be sure to charge 'em a Duff price.
$3.00!!!
The structure for something that massive will probably cost about $3.00 a serving!
I agree... st least $8.00 a serving for that, unless they are wanting a sheet cake cut into the shape of a motorcycle. (not standing up)
Good luck.... for $3.00, I'd run screaming in the other direction!!!
Duff and the CCC gang did a motorcycle cake recently. They had a frame built for the carved pieces to sit on. Maybe you could email Charm City Cakes for more info.

I agree with indydebi. $3/serving is too low for the amount of work involved.
Oh my my! I just want to start out by saying that I went to look at your cake pics to see a sample of your work. It is lovely (favorited a few ) so I can see why they have faith in you to do the job. BUT, I would only allow the $3/per price if they agreed to let you do a road sheet underneath and do smaller cycle (in rkt, cake and gumpaste) on top for show. If they want that behemoth motorcycle (all cake ) I would definitely up the price for that to at least the $8 op suggested. 225 x $8= 1800! For THAT price I'll figure out how they can ride on their cake Good luck
i don't even want to imagine what a cake like this would cost. just the SMALL one that duff did had to cost at least 1000 (all their cakes start at that i guess ). i guess i would run too. even for a motorcycle cake laying on its side, $3 just would not even pay for the headache. if you decide to do it, please charge more.
I think this couple needs a reality check. No way in the world can they get a sculpted cake for $3/serving. Talk about champaigne taste on a beer budget.
I'm pretty sure the one Duff did was only meant to feed 40 people. Yours would have to be massive!!!
Oh my my--way too low on the price, darling!
That cake should be over $1000 easily. Absolutely no less than $5.00 per serving, but I would go $8-$9.
The time, thought, structure...good gosh, you are not going to make anything on this at $3.00 a serving. And it doesn't matter if that is high for your area. This is not a NORMAL cake. It is a highly detailed, sculpted piece of edible ART!
or maybe do a small scale motorcycle cake for display, that can still be cut, but also do plane sheet cakes with similar frosting/coloring that is cut up in the back where no one can see that can be served to feed the number they are looking for?
Good luck!
I agree with everyone saying to do a road under it. I would also tell them that doing a cake that style to feed that many people is just not doable.
Granted I'm new and don't know too much.
I just stumbled across an old post that Doug made, and you know how when you change your avatar it changes for all posts including past posts...well his avatar currently reads "On Vacation." Clever! That explains why you can't reach him. Regardless I side w/the others anyway. $3/serving? Not on your life.
They are crazy! That cake listed by the pp is awesome -- but you can see that its not much bigger than the chip &dip server next to it.
at any rate a sculptured cake is worth much more than $3 a slice.
maybe you can sell them on a multi tiered cake with a biker theme? or send them to charm city cakes!
Is this the only cake they want? What about the brides cake, to feed the rest of the ppl?
