Hello everyone,
I will be attempting to make a bridal shower cake w/ a Hawaiian theme. I would like to add starfish, fish, seashells to my cake. How do I go about making these? Should I use fondant? Never have used it, but I can try! Would I just have to use a cookie cutter in these shapes? How do I attach them to a buttercream cake? Thank you!!!

Hi!! And welcome to our ADDICTION!!!
I would think if you don't have something to trace from I would use cookie cutters. Have you thought about using cookies? Also when I added the fondant to buttercream I just placed it on the cake and added a little pressure it stuck real good with no problem. GOOD LUCK!

Another idea would be to use candy molds. I have seen some really nice looking cakes others have made using candy shells & other sea life made with molds. There are several in the gallery that have shells, fish and other sea critters made with candy melts. I'd post a link but I seem to be doing that wrong lately, LOL!

Have fun!

I made a seashell cake using candy melts. It's in my photos. I then painted them with luster dusts. I've also heard you can use fondant, just dust the molds with powdered sugar first.

Yes, I agree the molds are the way to go. You don't have to use candy molds though, you can actually use candle or soap molds if you cannot get what you want in candy molds.

Thank you so much for all these great ideas! I just purchased a fish cookie cutter so I will try that. I'll also try the candy molds. Thanks again!
