with the outcome.............I don't sell cakes I just make cakes for my family members birthday and once I took a cake to a friends harvst party.

Well I was asked by a freind to bring a cake to a teen activity. She said the theme was Clue and I could just do whatever. So I looked at the Clue game board which i have and I decided that was way beyond my skill level so I sketched out some ideas. well I was bummed because i had issues w/ the cake.....I used WASC & and a chocolate extender recipe ....well I had made the WASC one other time before for my daughter's birthday and her freinds said they liked it, my hubby said he liked it so I decided to use this recipe....well for whatever reason it seemed like it took and eternity to bake this cake....same w/ the chocolate...anyway it was moist but not as moist as when i baked it the first time for my DD's b-day.
Second of all the MMF was a nightmare this time!!! I have used the same MMF recipe over and over and over and not had any real major issues until this cake!!! OMGosh I was about to cry this fondant had me so mad!!! Finally got it on.......well I had to make more for the little weapons, (knife, wrench, led pipe, gun, rope) and for the confindential file, magnifying glass and Clue sign and the little yellow moving squares....a variety of colors...OMG EVERY SINGLY batch of fondant was a night mare to get just right!!! I was sooooo glad to have this cake done & over with!!!
Well so a long story short i take the cake and decide to set it up on my game board just to add to the theme and help the cake.

Ok so there was some people who said they liked it (looks & taste) but I also heard, "I wish you would have made the board instead" "the cake looks a little plain"....."the cake is too sweet for me"......"the clue sign is like eating plastic LOL"

UGH looking back on the pictures I can see that yes it was a bit plain ....my initial plan (sketch) had more weapons going around (2 of the same just rotated so the gap wouldn't have been so big between each one) and I also had planned to make suspect lists , a dice, and pencil but because my fondant was so complicated this time I modified my idea and yes the cake looks plainer than I had planned.........

As for the cake recipe I don't think I'll use the WASC anymore.....it did taste too sweet to me this time ....maybe it's in my head since I heard those remarks.LOL Anyway, I went ahead and uploaded a picture.....I do concider this to be one of my failure cakes.LOL along w/ several others others ACK.

Now I know why I don't even want to sell cakes....way to stressful trying to please everyone!! I told my DH & Kiddos that from now on I'm making cakes just for them only & no one else!LOL

i'm quite picky about cakes, sometimes a little too much, but i swear...on this one, you've got it all wrong!!!!! i really like this cake!!! yeah, maybe the board would have had more impact, but i also would have been tons more work, tons more time, tons more stress, and tons more 'freebie cake"!!!!!

i love the simplicity of your design...i suffer from the affliction of wanting to add "just one more thing", and it bites me in the butt all the time!!!! your cake gets the point across quite well, the board as the cake board was brilliant!, and i'm saving it to my favorites.

no stress! don't let others get you down...please don't hide your candle under a basket; you do such a great job, that others besides your family deserve a chance at your talent also!!!

Another example of ... you can't please all the folks all the time. No matter what you do, someone will find something to gripe about. You did a good job on that cake. Forget it and move on.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I also looked at your cake and it was great! I think it was very creative to use the game board as the cake board. The comments that you listed seemed awful rude to me. Ignore those people and do what makes you happy - make cakes for people who will appreciate your talent!!

I'm lost as to why anyone would say that it was plain or anything else negative about it. It looks GREAT! You did a great job on the fondant and your details are awesome! icon_biggrin.gif Sometimes, less is more on a cake.

Regarding WASC, I tweaked it a little because I thought the almond flavor was too strong. Everyone else seemed to like it better too when I did that. I use whole eggs and real vanilla also and it gets raves. You might want to just try tweaking the recipe to fit your taste a little better.

Your cake is great! Don't ever think of it as a failure. I'm really sorry they responded like they did, I understand why you're bummed about it but personally, I think they're wrong. I just don't think that I would provide any more cakes for them, especially freebies. thumbs_up.gif

It looks awesome. Your fondant is perfectly smooth. The board definitely added a little touch. Anything more would have been too much.

Wow...reading your post, I was picturing something completely different than what I saw in your pictures. I think you did a fantastic job!! If they wanted a certain design, they should have spoken up. icon_confused.gif

I think it looks great and you should be really proud! thumbs_up.gif

So if i am reading this right you were asked to bring a cake to a function, bring as in not get paid for your time/energy/stuff to make the thing. You actually go to the store buy stuff, spend the time making/decorating the thing. And after you finish it comes out very cute, fun and professional looking.......Oh yes they so have room to complain, I mean hello you have nothing else to do with your life them make cakes, how dare you not devote your life to this cake!

A failure cake? Oh hunny you did not just go there. That cake is great. End of story and dont you dare try to argue with me. It is professional and cute. Nothing else to be said. Maybe its not exactly how you first thought of it, but its dang good. Give yourself credit for this one, if you dont I will be forced to come to your home and injest massive amounts of your cakes to prove you wrong!

Your cake is really cute! Be proud and next time someone asks for a cake, remind them that they're welcome to help out if they have a specific design in mind. If it's on your nickel and your time, it's your design!

I'm with you on the WASC cake. It's very sweet for my taste!

Your cake is Fabulous! All of them are! You can not always take what people say to heart. Like stated before, You fit the bill and made the cake and they want to complain, I DONT THINK SO! There was no room for complaint IMO. It totally fit the theme. Keep your head up, a smile on your face and keep bakin' cuz they probably couldnt come close to your talent. icon_biggrin.gif

I'm with everyone else....I just looked at the cake and I can't understand at all why there were "complaints" about the look of the cake. It's a fabulous cake, very smooth and clean lines and very interesting to look at. The idea of putting it on the game board was great!

As for the taste, I have cut out some of the additional sugar in the WASC recipe. I don't really think it needs all that added sugar. Still for people (other than close family) to comment out loud on the way something looks or tastes to just plain rude if you ask me....what happened to manners?

Your cake is beautiful. You say you had problems with fondant, it doesn't look like it at all. Don't be hard on yourself. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I understand it is hard to take it.

P.S: People who sell cakes probably charge over $100 for this. Good work.

Don't beat yourself up. That cake is AWESOME!! .

Something I have learned to say when people say it's to sweet!!
Yes it's sweet, it's SUGAR how do you think it's suppose to taste?

I've also started giving a heads up to the chewyness of fondant when I take an order or when I make a freebie cake. That way if someone has never eaten fondant will know your suppose to chew it unlike frosting.

Some people just have to find something to complain about and most of the time those people are just jealous of your talent.

I love your design. I don't think it's a failure, more like some people being envious about a talent that they don't have. Usually they try to bring the person down, instead of saying something nice.
They shouldn't have even comment on it since it was a free cake!!!

WHO are these people who were complaining and being negative?

I really can't imagine what they were thinking. That is a BEAUTIFUL cake. I'm at a loss to figure out what they didn't like. Seriously.

Not only are these people hard to figure out in their criticism, they also are sorely lacking in manners and gratitude.

I'm sorry you experienced that. Bring that cake here and we will show you some appreciation!

Complaints about the design of that cake?!?! Seriously??? No more cake for those people, then. Your cake is great and I can't believe anyone would be so rude and ungrateful to make any sort of negative comments about the design (I can't comment about the cake flavour, having never tried that recipe). Again - no more cake for them!

Thank you guys. Y'all are very sweet. I guess I was mostly upset because like many of you said it was free to them and she asked and her exact words were, "do whatever you want but keep it Clue themed"...
Maybe I'm just too sensitive.....I'm used to my family liking all the cakes I do for them.LOL
Maybe I need to get tougher skin if I keep making cakes for others...but I know I'll never sell them....I'm just a hobbiest I guess you could say.LOL
About the fondant, I ususally don't have any major problems w/ the MMF recipe that I uses. I think i have it figured out why it was so difficult to get right this time. It may sound weird but I think it depends on the weather (& humidity, time of day) Everytime I make one of my kids b-day cakes it's late at night...I'm mixing MMF up at 11p.m..........with this cake I worked during the early morning...that is the only thing I did different w/ the fondant.

I may give the WASC recipe another try but tweak it like someone metioned.

Anyway, I guess I should apologize for "whinning"...I'm just not used to making cakes for any one other than family and my family loves everythying about my cakes...LOL

What, are you kidding? The cake is beautiful! I love the color choices and the style. The weapons are very cute and the "Clue" sign is spot-on. It's not too plain at all. Minimal is good sometimes--it totally works here. It's so easy to go over the top--restraint is an art! Don't take anything you overheard to heart. This is a cake to be proud of!

Sounds to me like some of the people got it in their heads that the only way to do a Clue cake would be to make the board.

Foolish, foolish people. That is an AWESOME cake you did. I would have been THRILLED to get that cake.

About the sweetness--is it possible that it was your crumb coat that was too sweet, instead of your cake? Sometimes that can be the issue, and it can be hard to tell if you've just taken a bite of the whole cake.

I mean, just a thought.
