I wouldn't do it for the entire cake---it will get old quick! I mix mine w/ vodka. You'll need something w/ a high alcohol %

Ironically, I have a cake sitting on my counter ready for delivery later today that has silver scrolls on it. I mixed the dust with vodka, then just mixed it in with my BC. It's not "shiny" .... but it's silver.

You can mix lustre with buttercream. It will only color the buttercream if the lustre has color in it, and WILL NOT make it shiny. (You can use it to color fondant also, but given the cost, you wouldn't want to use it to color anything)
You can, however, airbrush lustre onto a buttercream cake, or if you are quick and it's a low humidity day, paint it onto a buttercream finish that has been frozen for 15 - 20 minutes first to set the coating.
