Just a question. Do alot of people on here mind if we use their ideas? I have been looking at some cakes, and if I use the idea I will definetly give credit to whom I got it from. Just don't want to peeve someone off. Thanks.
I think the general consensus is that it's nice to ask them, but even more appropriate to also credit them with inspiring you when you post your photo in the gallery after the fact.
I think a lot of folks (most, maybe?) are very complimented when you like their work enough to want to try it yourself!
don,t do it just like they have done it.... add some..... take away some.... then its your own.... then add that so and so's cake on here inspired you to come up with what you did.... i have seen that done many times on here... hth
I take it as a huge compliment when someone uses one of my cakes as inspiration. I don't need to be asked but I love to get a PM from another cake decorator saying thanks for the inspiration. Always makes me day
Thanks guys, just wanted to make sure I was not going to step on any toes. I will do my best to make it a little of my own and thanks those for the inspiration.
Wow! I would be honored if someone liked my cake enough to want to copy it, or use it for inspiration!
My personally feelings is if someone doesn't want a cake they have done copied they should not post the picture on the internet for the world to see.
I had many people ask me after I posted the black and white cake if they could copy it. And in my head I was thinking if I said no would you not do it? How would I ever know unless you posted it. And since I hardly get a chance to look at pictures, I probably wouldn't know.
I've actually wondered if anyone has copied it yet.
I finally posted some pictures here. I am so obsessive, i check all the time to see how many people have added them to their favorites - I would LOVE LOVE LOVE it if one of my cakes inspired someone else - no need to ask - that is why I posted them.
We are at a point where most ideas you see are not totally original. They were inspired by someone else and built on. When that happens it is hard to know whom to credit. I just try to build on an idea instead of copying and credit people when I can.

I agree with you "TexasSugar" if some posts their work anywhere their design might get redone. Even if someone was to say no, how would they really know or try to go about finding out. I think it's cool when people remember who gave them the inspiration. I aways try to do that now.
Good Luck.
Oh my goodness! I hope I haven't stepped on anyone's toes!
I have shamelessly copied others on every single cake I have made since I discovered CC. I have never asked for permission in advance, but I do make a point to give credit to a specific person if I print out a picture of their cake to use as "inspiration."
I usually get ideas from several cakes and manage to screw up a few things so it never ends up looking exactly like anyone else's anyway.

IMHO I don't really think you need to ask to make someone elses design. That's why we all post our pictures here. To get ideas and inspiration. I would just give credit to the person who originally had done it.

Exactly. That's only coomon sense.
It would be hard to believe that the majority of ideas don't come from some other inspiration (in part or whole).
The reason why we post them is to share ideas, is it not? It is nice to be mentioned, but I don't think you have to, no 2 cakes are exactly alike. I love the fact that we can come on here and share ideas, and learn some wisdom from others whom are more advanced than us. That is very sweet of you to ask that question though.
There is a reason for the saying, "there's nothing new under the sun". I do not personally believe that any ideas are entirely original because everyone finds inspiration in something besides their own mind.
Some find it in others' cakes, some are inspired by nature, some by fabric, paint, architecture, etc.
Besides, no one is ever able to exactly replicate another artist's style, and because of this I think it is impossible to not put your unique stamp on a cake - "copied" or not.
I feel like there is enough inspiration in the world for everyone to share.

I'm with you on this one. AND I would love to copy your cake one day when I'm good enough.
I am very flattered when my cakes have inspired someone.. I certainly appreciate the inspiration I get from other artists.. I always give credit when possible though.. just common courtesy I think
This is the most amazing site....We post pictures to share, brag, ask for critizism and hopefully good enough for someone to copy.
I have gotten so many ideas, technique from this site it has helped me to grow in my cake decorating. I agree....If you don't want anyone to copy.....don't post.
I try not to copy idenitically.....you have to ad your own touch to your cakes. Anyways.....I have done one of my cake designs 3 or 4 times and each time they come out a little different. "their own personal cake"
Thanks CC members for making this site so good.
I personally get TONS of ideas from CC. There are so many talented decorators...and many times I want to "try" what they have done. Usually I'll tweak it to fit my needs or abilities, but if I do copy a cake design, I always try to give credit where it's due. I always think the originals are best anyway and I let them know it and hope they're flattered!

Go for it! It wasn't hard to do, just time consuming.
