Fondant cowboy hat

Could someone give me instructions on how to make a fondant cowboy hat? I'm doing a birthday cake for a rodeo queen and would love some pointers!!!

I made a cowboy hat cake covered in fondant. It's really easy if you use the oval pans for the hat. Stack three high, cut out a notch in top and cover in fondant. I used a large oval of gumpaste for the brim - cut a hole in center for the cake. I placed it on thick foam and proped up the foam on both sides to curl up like a real cowboy hat. It took a few days to dry. I dusted with petal dust to give it a suede look and added a fondant band. Actually was pretty easy to do. Just took a little time for the brim to dry. Hope this helps you.

Thanks, Daisy. I would like to bump this to see if anyone else has tips for a fondant/gumpaste hat so I don't have to make a separate cake. Anyone???

How big are you wanting the fondant/gumpaste hat? I have made several small ones for the top of a cake using the mini wonder mold pan.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

If you look in my pic the smaller cowboy hat (on the cake with the boots) was made using a small cowboy hat to shape the brim and the cake part of the hat was cut out with a Large cookie cutter

i made one...it's in my photos. it was a "cavalry" hat.

i did gumpaste for the brim, molded off of my cowboy hat, and then propped up to the shape i needed. after two days of drying and airbrushing multiple times to get it the color i needed, it was laying on the countertop. my husband opened up the cabinet right above it, a plastic cup fell out,a nd wouldn't you know it...it fell right on the turned up brim part. broke a big chunk out, but i was able to hide it with the "neckerchief" i draped in the back...shewwww!!

it wasn't really hard to do this, just takes a couple of days to dry. i would highly recommend gumpaste, though, over fondant, since fondant is affected by the humidity in the air, and might soften back up on you, or never even get hard at all.
