Hubby emailed me this ... but he didn't include the link it came from. Just another example of brides are being told.

Wonder if they are being told that flowers are all the same ..."They're just flowers with dirt" ..... or if Venues are the same "....they're just a big room with tables."

But cake? "....they're all the same .... just flour, butter and sugar".

------ the section he sent me - bolding added by me ----------

And donât forget the wedding cake, which can be very expensive, depending on the number of guests attending. Consider purchasing a decorated sheet cake from a local bakery in addition to a smaller tiered cake. Then marry them together as one elaborate cake with piping and rose petals. Brides and grooms may find that bakeries like those at a Wal-Mart Supercenter can make unique and cost-conscious tiered wedding cakes that are beautiful as well as delicious. Remember, all cakes are created equal â flour, sugar, and butter â so thereâs no need to spend a fortune on one.

well sure, what difference does it make in the cake if you decorate the entire cake in 15 mins or in 12 hours....what's the difference?

Right... you get your cake from Walmart so why not buy your dress there too? Uh-huh, sure.

"All cakes are created equal...." What a ridiculous statement. Apparently the author of that piece has never compared a good cake to one of those grocery store substitutes.

That's too funny...and you know, all PHOTOGRAPHERS are the same, so just have someone with their Poloroid there snapping pictures and you don't even have to deal with getting them processed! Can you imagine during the wedding hearing click-chavrrruummm every 5 seconds! SO CLASSY!!

And of course all reception halls are the same, too. May as well just have it in your own back yard and save the expense!!

lol good one! I am wondering who believes this, because by that logic there is no difference in anything. Every car is the same, Honda or BMW, doesnt matter, just an engine that gets you from point A to point B.

Question, I wonder how often brides walk in to get their wedding bands from a jewery store and tell them that the difference between a 2ct and a 1ct is so small why the big price difference.

Marketing people must flip their lids when they hear stuff like this, I mean its their job to convice people that their product is in a certian price class. Companies spend millions in promoting product placement in the minds of consumers, this goes against all of that.

you know, I know it's been said on here, nothing is wrong with a Wal-mart/grocery wedding if that is what is in your budget.

But the whole champagne taste w/beer budget is the worst!!

It's become customary for people from my village to ask for 'sponsors' for quinceaneras/weddings and dude, it's ridiculous!! It's gotten to the point that the families end up having HUGE wedding where the 'champagne taste' is only extended to the bridal/quinceanera party and not the guests. Plus they probably end up making money off of it as well!

Look guys i completely agree with you on this.
These things don't get me upset though. A lot of the people I deal with try to outdo their friends or neighbors. So wedding gowns have to be spectacular and so do the cakes. I call it the "keeping up with the jonses" effect.
So, if they buy their cake at the nearest Wal-mart, their secret will be out one way or another and it will be cause for emabarrasment. I have dealt with a small community so far, but that seems to be the case with a lot of the girls i came across.
If you do come across a cheapo, then do send them to the walmart and save yourself the headache.

Maybe this is an article that is from a source that is cleverly backed by Wal-mart? Otherwise, I don't believe they would mention a specific bakery...if the source wasn't biased, they would probably just mention a "supermarket bakery."

I don't get riled up about these things, I think that most people know that you get what you pay for.

I am THE CHEAPEST person I know (okay, maybe frugal would be a better word for it), I'm forever waiting for Michael's or Hobby Lobby's coupons to get the expensive items. I think the main thing that the article is trying to convey is that you don't have to spend a fortune on a classy wedding if you get creative and cut corners where you can (good silk flowers instead of real ones, etc.).

That being said, if someone comes to you and wants cake for $1 or less a slice, you need to just be upfront with them about your costs. If they cannot afford your prices, then I've found that it's best for them to search somewhere else. You won't be driven mad by someone who is forever trying to talk you down on your product/service. They will soon find that even if you go to WalMart of Sam's, it may not be possible for them to individualize what they are wanting.

I'm helping a couple of people who are getting married next year and am looking at make your own invitations and fortunately (or maybe unfortunately), I do calligraphy, so I know I will be addressing a lot of envelopes sometime soon, but there are ways to cut some corners and still have a very beautiful (and probably more distinctive) wedding.

It's also good if you have friends who are bakers, photographers, caterers, etc.

HA! Love that one!!!! LOL

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Even before I got involved in the cake business I knew that not all cakes are created equal (some are worth the fat on the thighs, while others aren't) ... just like not all meat is created equal or even fruits and vegetables are created equal. How many people do you know who will buy their meat at one store, but their produce at another because the quality/price is not the same when buying it all at one place. I think deep down people know there's a definite difference in taste and you'd have to be blind not to see the difference in appearance (especially if you want something specific), but are always looking to get something for nothing. We've got to stop taking it personally ... I've got the same thing in EVERY business I'm involved with where people think there's always some kind of deal that can be made and usually it's "give me something for nothing". Unfortunate, but true.

BTW - Most of those suggestions they make would only save you money if YOU did the work yourself and didn't pay yourself for your labor. If you're not willing to put in that much time in your own wedding, why would I want to do it for nothing????? Give me a break!

Wow, that article has some crappy advice in it! Like, renting linens and table places being more expensive than buying them--huhWHAT? I'm sorry, 30 cents versus $2, and then you have to wash and transport them all yourself, TOO...nuh-UH.

This is definitely Walmart trying to get its cut. It's the ONLY place mentioned by name in there, at least twice that I saw.

When I went to get my cake for my 30th b-day last year, my mother wanted to try to go to a cheaper local bakery as opposed to the bakery near the site of the party that I really wanted. I went, "But I want THAT cake! It tastes better and it's prettier, even if it is $100 more expensive!" And ya know what? It was!

To me, you are not just paying for a cake. You are paying for a WORK OF EDIBLE ART.

If you don't care about how it looks or how it tastes, then by all means a Wal-Mart cake is just what you need. But if you want a cake that everyone will love & rave about for years to come, then you must be willing to open the checkbook a little bit wider and pay for it!

The article is just too cut & dry...a wedding is about love & friendship and making wonderful memories, not just about a price tag.

Actually, I thought the article sounded like any other wedding article. A mixture of good, corny, and bad advice. Some of it is a viable option while others aren't.

Renting tablecloths and partyware is expensive. That's why I attend more weddings with plastic tablecloths and throw-away plates. Gets the job done and who really cares what they are eating off of?

Sandra Lee was quoted in that article. I never really liked her. No particular reason, just rubbed me the wrong way. Now I have a reason to hate her! Oooh, Ina Garten would kick her butt in a "semi-homemade" cake contest!

Yes, yes, it is expensive to rent tablecloths and partyware. But it's still less expensive than BUYING the same stuff.

Personally, I wouldn't want plastic tablecloths and throwaway plates at my wedding, because I DO care what I eat off of. I'm not going to tell someone else that their wedding is lousy because they chose to go that route, though. I've been to several like that, including my aunt's! And doing the Walmart cake is a viable idea.

It's the implication that these things will look the same as if you put more money/effort into it that has me going, "It's bad advice." If you use Walmart cakes, they look like Walmart cakes. If you don't mind that, sure, go ahead. But it's NOT the same as the $500+ wedding masterpiece that's going to be created by one of the talented artists on these forums, either.

My local Sam's sells banquet linen tablecloths in packs of 3 for about $21 (approx $7 each). Or you can rent them for approx $7 each at the local party rental company.

But .....

I bought some linens to keep on hand, thinking it would be cost effective when I had a small (50-ish) event to use my own linens.

Then I took them to the cleaners .... icon_eek.gif ..... omg, it's cheaper to throw them away and buy new ones than it is to clean these things! Then you have to store them ... do you have any idea how much space 15 or 20 large tablecloths take up? Especially if you're a bride who isn't really planning on setting up 15 or 20 tables in her living room any time soon?

Yeah ... renting a linen for $7 is more expensive than buying the $2 plastic one .... but let's get real and compare apples to apples here.

So wait have I been making cakes wrong this whole time? icon_confused.gif

Are they trying to tell me ALL I need is flour, sugar and butter?

So I've been wasting money on eggs, milk, real vanilla, chocolate and all the time it takes to make hand made fondant flowers and figures not to mention busting my rear making batch after batch of butter cream icon_cry.gif

And this whole time I could have just been mixing some flour, sugar and butter in a bowl?

Wow do I feel like an idiot icon_redface.gif

You know, it's been my experience that only cheap people think a cake is "butter, flour and eggs." They're the same people that only want to pay for supplies and don't understand why they should pay for labor and delivery.

I have a very good line I use on people like that.

"If you hired a contractor to build you a deck, do you think he'd only charge you for the wood?"

I also tell them, "If you want the same cake that everyone else has had at their parties, it will be way cheaper for you to go to Vons (or where ever). But if you want a cake that people will want to take photos of, and rant and rave about how awesome it looks, then you want one of mine. I don't specialize in sheet cakes with plastic toys stuck to them."

You get what you pay for. If you want to be remembered as the cheap Bride who served Costco cake at her wedding, that's on you.
