If so, what is it?

I dont have one posted on my website currently, but will soon. Also upping prices. My minimum is going to be $50. I work full time and have two lil kids... anything less than that isnt worth my time at all. My mom (who is my biggest critic!) gave me an earful when I told her... your thoughts?

and it's $150...I work at home, and I specialize in very customized cakes, which minimally require most of an 8-hour day, since I make everything including fondant from scratch. I assumed I had nothing prepared in advance when I figured out this price....

Does your mom run a business? A food business? No? Then ignore her.

My smallest sheet I'll do is 11x15 .... smallest single round/layered cake I'll do is 8" and that cost $60.

For items local its $50, i also bake for a store that is a bit of a hall away (35minutes) for there its $100 or i add a $10 ser charge, thats the amount of gas that it takes me to get there and i'm just not doing it for free. I also hold down a full time job so this is not my only means of income.

I am like stumptower, make my own fillings except for fruit pastry fillings...

I am considering having a minimum as well, but I rarely get any orders less than $100 these days (at $ to $5 per serving).

Hi,

I agree with all of you, especially stumptownrower. When you think about the service you provide it does cost money. I too make everything from scratch because that is how I want to do things. I am getting braver in telling what my price is min. $50. Most don't quibble, I've only had one not respond to my quote but I fiqure I cannot make every cake in this town! We are our own worst critics and can only blame ourselves if we don't charge what we are worth.

I don't have a minimum yet but I think it's a great idea. I would totally do it if I had more business but right now I take what I can for the practice.

I do.. $90 for a single tier (equals and 8" round) and $135 for a tiered cake (equals a 6-8 round).

Anything else isn't worth my time.

Mine is currently $50, but I think it's fixing to go up. I haven't had a $50 order ever.

Those of you that have a $100 minumum...is this for all cakes, even party cakes, or are you talking wedding?

My party cakes are almost always sculpted, with a lot of detail (and almost always more work than a wedding cake), so I charge the same minimum, and the same per-slice price.

The replies on this forum are very interesting.... and eye opening for myself. icon_eek.gif I am relatively new at baking cakes but I generally work with fondant and sculpting fondant. I am sssooo bad at pricing my cakes (and even get nervous when people as me for quotes icon_redface.gif ) that I always undercharge. I have worked 13 hours on a tiered cake and was paid $100. Like many others, I work full-time, am married with a 2-year-old - so most of my cakes are decorated late into the night or require an early, early, early rise on the weekends.
Thanks for posting this forum and for all the replies, as I am slowly realizing that my work is worth the money.

I have a $90 min (so almost $100) and that is for all cakes.. not just weddings. I charge $4.50/serving so an 8" cake is $90 no matter what it's for. icon_smile.gif

My smallest sheet (11x15) is $53 and my smallest round-2-layer (8") is $60.
