I would like to know how much you can make at home doing cakes. Do you charge for tax? I live in Illinois and I want to make sure I am doing things right.

Well, it is illegal to have a home bakery in Illinois unfortunately. There are other options you can look into though like renting kitchen space.

Well, I live in Illinois. There is also a link here on Cake Central to help people find information on their state.

As far as renting, you would need to ask local restaurants, caterers, churches, etc. to ask them if you can rent space when they don't need it.

I am in Illinois and I bake from home only for family/friends. No advertising prices or anything like that. Word of mouth only. An no prices on your website, if you're going to have one. I've been under the radar for 2.5 years and all's well so far.

It depends on your county a bit as far how strict the HD is and what your options are. I live in IL also, have a licensed kitchen at my home and did have some options available to me prior to having that built.

I would suggest you contact your county health department. I have always had a great relationship with the folks there. They are more than happy to answer questions. You may be surprised at what you find out, I know I was.

If you want more info PM me which county you are in with your questions, I'll see what I can find out. icon_smile.gif

I live in Illinois also, but have only been doing cakes for family/friends so far. I would like to do more also, but finding a place to rent in the middle of nowhere is hard. I wish you luck!
