HA HA HA!! This post has me laughing - you probably don't want to KNOW if she licked or touched other parts..... but at the same time, I have found that "cat people" or "dog people" don't mind sharing food with their animals.... I'm a "horse person" & I don't care if they lick me with their gross/grassy tongue =) So, hopefully you are one of those extreme cat people & don't care =)
I just gave a Bridal Consultation where the Mother-of-the-Groom explained how she had made 2 apple pies for a family reunion... and it was covered & everything. She noticed that there were 4 pigeons in the box, with the cellophane wrap still over the top - so she doesn't know how they got in, but they weaseled themselves in & ruined/ate both pies!

definately not a cat lover

I'm cracking up. I love all the posts, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I would like to clarify a few things.

The cake I posted about is for my Sunday school. I had always planned on rebaking it. It just frustrated me that the cat ate it and I had to rebake at midnight. So the dilemma was to bake at midnight or wait until morning. I baked it at midnight so it was ready for icing today.

The cake I cut the cat bites out of was a half sheet cake intended for a practice cake for my husband and I. I did salvage it for that purpose as the first cake I made that same day for the same project was not usable at all. I wasn't about to make another entire half sheet for a practice cake just because my fat carboholic kitty wanted a taste.

The funniest thing about the situation the other day is that the cat I thought was the culprit the first time was in the living room with me the whole time. The fat cat, the one that actually did it, is NEVER seen up on the dining room chairs let alone the table. Needless to say, the cake was discarded, the table was wiped clean and the process started all over again.

I'm happy to say that the 9" cake is completed and covered and in the fridge. The 12" cake is iced ready for piping and sitting on the counter. With a big lobster pot over top of it to keep it clean and covered.

So again, thank you to EVERYONE who posted. You had me cracking up.

For anyone in the Austin, TX area who doesn't mind eating in a home with pets, maybe we can get together and BBQ or something. PM if you're interested.

Hahaha! Cats are so full of personality!! icon_biggrin.gif My oldest cat (Who is kind of a calico, too.. hmmm... Maybe it IS a breed thing!) used to love cake and bread. We came into the kitchen to find a pound cake (that was in a ziplock bag) halfway eaten! icon_eek.gif Bad Katie!! And she'd also eat bread. *shakes head* And she IS tubby icon_lol.gif

Now, how's THIS for you other cat lovers... Do you have any cats that eat olives? GREEN olives? My Ivan does! He loves them!! He about attacked my mom when she had some olives the other day. Was holding her hand down to his mouth so he could lick her fingers! So I gave him a tiny sliced olive and he gobbled it down and was looking for more. I don't let him have them very often, though, because of all the salt, but man, he loves them! He begs whenever I open a jar icon_smile.gif

I'm a dog person and a long time ago (before my cake days) when my son was younger, he liked to lick stuff and put it back, cookies, Cheetos and such. Anyways, we had a pantry and I kept the cookies on the bottom shelf. One day, I grabbed a few cookies and a big cold glass of milk. Yummy! I noticed the cookies were wet icon_confused.gif and thought, "great, my son got into the cookies again!". Figuring he did it, I just ate the cookies and they were scrumptious! When I went to take the glass back to the kitchen I found my bulldog licking the cookies!!!!!! I think I got a picture of him caught in the act!! Needless to say, I started to keep the canned items on the bottom and the sweets on the top. My family still gives me grief over that!!!! icon_redface.gif

My cat will not eat any people food except Spaghettios. When my husband eats them (personally I think they're inedible), he always shares and puts a little in the cat's bowl. Otherwise, the cat goes crazy and climbs all over him trying to get a bite. Too funny.

I had a friend whose cat went crazy for cantelope.

And thank you, MeMo for putting the person with the nasty comments about cats in her place. There's just no reason for that ugliness.

my same cat that used to eat my donuts etc with me- also was in to my fake christmas tree... yes the fake one.. i tried sprinkling it with lemonjuice, spilled some juice on the floor.. while i was sprinkling the rest of the tree.. she was licking up the spilled lemon juice (doh!) so every year from then on i had to sprinkle tobasco sauce on the tree from waist level down then air out the house- was the only thing that kept her from eating the fake christmas tree.. oh and she liked your iced tea, and raspberry creme soda icon_razz.gif

I love kitties. I love animals in general, but cats are my fave. I love their tudes! We actually had a stray cat we were feeding outside slip in once (and we didn't notice) and he perched his fat butt right on top of a moon and stars and other decs I had drying!!! When we got home my first surprise was seeing him in the house, then my next surprise was the smashed pawprinted decs!!!! I wasn't happy!

I did throw them away and remake them.

GenGen, talking about christmas trees. DH cousin had a cat that like to eat the icicle tinsel off the tree. She discovered it when (sorry this may be too gross to repeat but....) she saw him running down the hall with "ornaments" attached to the tinsel dangling just below his tail. No more icicles on her tree from then on.

One other story...

When I was a teenager my mom had three cats. One day we kept hearing one of them crying, but it was a faint cry. We looked for him and couldn't find him. Looked outside, still no. After a bit we noticed one of the others crying and going a bit nutso in front of the refrigerator. We opened the door, and there sat poor Radcliffe, quite chilled to the bone. He had a bad habit of trying to get into the fridge anytime the door was opened. Normally we saw him and kept him out. That day, someone wasn't paying attention and he got in. Needless to say, we didn't have that problem anymore. The pic of the kitty in the fridge reminded me of it.

Something to ponder- studies have shown that children who grow up in a pet household have better immune systems. Also, there are "standards" for commercial food like only so many rodent hairs for example. As soon as you open a can of beans you are going to have contamination from the air, the plate, the fork. So, maybe, we draw a line with animals sampling our food before we do, but there is bacteria everywhere but much of it won't cause illness. I recently had to put down my 16 year old pug dog and I would love to still have him here to share a treat with me.

I've been in animal care for 6 years and I love, love, love all animals. I do. I have pets and they are spoiled to death. They even have the 2nd bdrm, But I do have rules. They cannot (WILL NOT) have access to kitchen counters, tabletops or the kitchen for that matter and we do not share utensils, food, etc. I'm sorry. I just have this thing. I clean constantly. I disinfect and deodorize their belongings all of the time(seperate from mine) and even give them baths incl. my cats. But, I know you can't get rid of every single trace of anything. Which is why I understand the laws of operating out of your own home. I always wear a bib apron, clean (plain) tshirt, bandana, etc..and it may sound silly, but I'm like a paranoid germaphobe sometimes (contradicting huh icon_redface.gif ).The thing is, my kitchen is like my operating room. I don't only do this w/my pets, but w/ everyone. I get why non pet lovers would be sensitive to this issue, because as a pet lover, I actually am. I am turned off to things very easily so I wouldn't have been able to just chuck a piece of the cake or give it to anyone. But hey, why attack you when its your perogative to do what you want. You ate your cake and had a laugh...Cheers!

I just have to laugh at any one who has a cat and thinks that they stay off of anything when you aren't home. While you are home.. sure.. but once you leave.. no way. Unless you have some sort of deterant system of course.. but cats really don't care what your rules are.

And I love cats and have one so don't think I'm a hater. icon_wink.gif

Thank you for that website. Too funny.

I love animals too. Always had at least one cat and one dog while growing up. My beloved Princess Turbo (got her while I was in 2nd grade, called her Princess until she shot across the house at turbo speed one day) loved McDonald's french fries, and only McDonald's french fries, wouldn't touch BK, Wendy's or any of the others. She passed this love onto her son. When we'd come home with McD's we had to make sure to give them a couple fries right away. A couple times we'd be so busy we'd forget and come to the table to find their heads in the bag stealing some fries. When she died, I buried her with an order of fries.

DH hates cats, and I so miss having kitties around.

OK, first of all, I am not a cat hater. My daughter has one but it IS NOT allowed in my kitchen at any time especially when I'm baking/decorating. As one other poster mentioned ~ cats lick their butts ~ then eat with that same mouth/tongue; that's not sanitary by any means.
So to have them wandering all over the kitchen leaving traces of hair and kitty litter wherever they go ~ yes, just plain nasty.

This guy had to be the same guy that trained our Wilton instructor! She was a complete slob. When she was showing us how to make bc, she kept sticking her fingers in the bowl to taste it. When she was done she passed it around the room so we could all have a taste. No spoons, no spatula, she just expected 20 full grown women to stick their fingers in the bowl of frosting. icon_confused.gif

I never saw her wash her hands once - even though there was a sink in the classroom. She would wipe her hands off on her pants or lick her hands clean.

She'd also lick the decorating tip clean, and scoop up frosting that had oozed out of the bag and onto the counter top then either eat it or put it back in the bag. If she made a mistake decorating, she'd wipe the frosting off the cake with her finger and eat it. At the end of each class she'd offer her "masterpiece" to us. No one wanted it, so she'd leave it in the employee break room (the classes were at Hobby Lobby store).

Yum -O !

I still say unless you have a door on your kitchen.. that cat doesn't stay out at all times. Cats don't care about what you want.

I never let mine in the kitchen when I am cooking either.. but I know for a fact she sneaks in there when I am not home or am asleep. Kitty prints will rat you out everytime Miss Kay (that's my cat's name).

And I missed that comment about the lack of cleanliness in restaurants.. I have worked in kitchens my whole life.. you really don't want to know what goes on.. even in the most frou frou places. Licking a pastry tip is mild..

To jkalman-
I don't think you're a hater, you're right. I do have faith in my pets. I don't find things any different in the kitchen but, I don't think that when my cats reach the entrance to my kitchen they do an about face. I have no doubt in my mind that when pet owners aren't home, pets get into and onto whatever they want. But, what can you do, set up an invisible fencing system? LOL. Nah. Its so funny because I remember one of the first apartments I lived in with my mom we had a door on the kitchen, they're not made like that anymore.

To jockmom-
The instructor would scoop his/her finger in the bowl? Hahaha..I'm sorry, I would not be a happy camper. icon_sad.gif Even for a practice cake, ugh.
