I understand that you wanted to share the story because you thought it was funny. I can totally relate. We got a dog for my daughter and I have never even thought of a dog getting up to a cake on the dining room table as it cools to eat some of it but this dog can climb a tree (found that out later) and she got up and ate some of a cake that was cooling. I was more worried about her getting sick from eating the cake than having to remake it. It was not an order and was for us so no big deal but it is a funny story to think about..... now about climbing trees.... we had to put things up in the tree to keep her from going up to high. She figured the squirrels can do it so she could too!!!!

Point is, there is lots of disgusting stuff going on....you never know what could happen- so unless you want to be talked down to whenever you tell a cute story about YOUR child grabbing a handful of icing out of the bowl, your husband trying to "Help" or whatever, I think we should all just laugh it off- she DIDN'T serve it to anyone but her and her husband from what I understand- and if they have a cat, they more than likely are not SOOOOOOO disgusted by it.

Can we get back to fighting about Mix vs. Scratch, "American" Buttercream vs whatever the other stuff is? Something not so personal? LOL.

I have not been able to finish a fondant bow and dry it properly, every time I get close my chihuhua decides to eat it, no matter where I put it he can sniff it out. He is definately a fondant kinda guy!

The thing is that no one seems to want to hear is that it was a cake FOR HER.. not for someone else. I'm with the hippo comment.. if I make a cake for me and I drag it on the floor and let my kids stick their boogar fingers in it and then my cat licks the BC off one side while my dog licks the other.. I'm gonna eat it if I want to.. Would NEVER in a mazzilion years serve it to others, but for me.. it's up to me what I consider nasty for my own body.. (not that I would actually eat a cake that went through all of that but just for argument's sake here).

I have to say Jkalman that your post was quite amusing! I can't quit laughing!! I agree with everyone else! She was sharing the story so we could all get a good laugh and it worked. If the item is for home, it is up to us to decide whether or not we partake in it after people and /or animals get to it!
EnjoyTheCake-I think it is a cute story and feel bad for you that you have to rebake! Also, I love that cake in your avatar. I wanetd to save it to my favs and noticed you don't have any there. You must be as bad as me about downloading your pics!! Thank you for the laugh!!!

HA HA HA!! This post has me laughing - you probably don't want to KNOW if she licked or touched other parts..... but at the same time, I have found that "cat people" or "dog people" don't mind sharing food with their animals.... I'm a "horse person" & I don't care if they lick me with their gross/grassy tongue =) So, hopefully you are one of those extreme cat people & don't care =)

I just gave a Bridal Consultation where the Mother-of-the-Groom explained how she had made 2 apple pies for a family reunion... and it was covered & everything. She noticed that there were 4 pigeons in the box, with the cellophane wrap still over the top - so she doesn't know how they got in, but they weaseled themselves in & ruined/ate both pies!

Let me just say that a hair can show up anywhere! I work for a major touristy restaurant famous for its pies and guess what? I served a piece of chocolate peanut butter pie, the lady called me over and with her hand covering her mouth and a completely grossed out look on her face and said there was hair "inside" her pie and she preceded to show me the hair. Need less to say they were not charged for their pie. Did I mention that the hair looked suspiciously like one of her own! You would not believe what lengths some people will go to to get a free meal!! Who's to know??

I've had cats all my life (I won't say how many yrs). I have never had one that ate sweets. This is a new one for me.

Having pets when you bake is a pain. I normally bake for friends. I clean the kitchen before I start baking which sucks because I have to clean it again when I'm done.

Our Dog passed away last July and DH is bugging me to adopt a Grayhound. Some of you may not know that when a Grayhound is passed it's racing prime they have it put under unless an organization saves it for adoption.

Most of the old timers here know that we have had many, many license vs. non-license bakers. But, I wold rather eat in someones home that has animals than a resturant. I've worked in them I know what goes on.

I can so relate to this story! My cats and dogs won't touch cake or anything sweet.. but one of my cats LOVES anything Italian. They do not go to the kitchen except for water, and have never jumped on counters since they were kittens. My italian loving kitty however managed to knock a pizza box off the counter and was working at getting it open when I went to see what the noise was. She will come over and act like she is going to try to steal spaghetti etc off my plate if she doesn't get a small saucer with a few bites of her own on it.

Ah, what would I do without my 4 legged mop to catch my spills, drips and crumbs. Plus if she won't eat it I know I had better recheck it. She eats just about anything. Today she was eating those new chocolate vanilla swirl marshmallows. Complained I limited her too two of them.

The original post stated that she was up late at night baking a 9" cake and two 12" cakes. Based on the amount of cake being baked I assumed that she was working on a cake order.

I agree with the hippo comment. Knock yourself out - pan for gold in the litter box if it makes you happy. icon_lol.gif

Jocmom, she also said she was re-making that 9" round. It was a different cake that she made for her husband and herself that she just cut the bitten part off. (I went back and looked at the first post. It's under the picture of the cat where she says that she's remaking it as well as making the other rounds.)

I do say this, though--at least for cats, it's pretty rare for them to lick the whole thing and then bite a small part. Usually if they're going to bite into it, they don't bother to slobber over the whole thing. So for the cake for her and her husband, there's about a 90% chance that she cut away anything that was contaminated, just like someone trimming off a black spot on a potato.

I have to laugh! I don't normally read any of these messages, but your subject matter caught my attention!

I personally have 3 cats and fortunately none of them have been attracted in the least to my cakes - HOWEVER! I have a cat that looks EXACTLY like yours that has an obsession with bread!! Anytime we bring groceries into the house the bag with the bread cannot be left on the floor, counter or table! It has to be the first thing put away because Sadie can smell it a mile away! She will eat through the bag and everything just to get to it!

Maybe it's the breed?? LOL!

I have a little Torti cat as well (that is the name of those colorful cats). Luckily, she has no desire to eat any people food, and she never jumps on tables or counters. She really is a perfect cat - a complete angel.

I thought the story was cute and I believe it was meant to make animal people laugh. I am sad to see how mean and lecturing people can be. Geez, lighten up!

Cats are the most disgusting creature and when I see one on a counter or jumping on a table all I think about is that there feet were just in the kitty litter and we all know what's in there!!!!
DISGUSTING!!!!
P.S.Remember that the next time you cut off the "bad" piece and eat the rest!
I feel sick thinking about it.

...And for those of you who seem to think that because something comes from a professional kitchen or bakeshop it's going to be cleaner than a home kitchen, let me tell you about the pastry chef in an upscale restaurant who was training my friend. He was showing her how to pipe borders on a cake, and would pipe pipe pipe, then lick the tip to "clean" it, then pipe pipe pipe, then lick the tip, then pipe pipe pipe, then lick the tip...You get the picture. icon_eek.gif My husband and I love to watch the
"restaurant report" on the news here, it's a list of all of the violations in local restaurants and it's disgusting! Let's not assume that pets in a home make for unsanitary situations, people can do that pretty well on their own. icon_lol.gif

Yeah sometimes things happen at home and its just funny. I have to watch my son when I'm baking because if I have a cake cooling on the table he wll get into it. He is 2 years old. I'm not going to rebake a whole cake because he put his finger in it. Once he even bit a small piece out. I guess that make me disgusting. Oh well. I've been in bakeries that they dont wear gloves and touch everything even put frosting in buckets with no gloves. So I feel alot safer with my two year old poking his finger in the cake. It was a funny story and that fat cat needs to be put on a diet. NO CAKE FOR HIM!

I couldn't live without pets, I have three cats, 2 of which are kittens and into everything. I have to constantly wipe down counters and tables. My big cat he doesn't get onto any counter tops but the kittens have just learned that they can jump that high now and they don't want to miss anything.

Years ago I had a cat that ate watermelon and blueberry pie- now that is strange.

Pets or kids or even husbands you just never know what will happen when they are around. Husbands can be worse than the kids or the pets at getting into the cake.

Maybe both of you could just stay out of posts that involve LOVED pets then....Instead of telling us how gross you think our animals are?

Seriously? That adds NOTHING constructive to this conversation. I don't care how gross you think someones cat is. You are obviously not cat lovers....got it....If someone has a post about chewing tobaco, I'm not going to open it up and spew my intolerence around just because I don't like it....I'm going to click that little X in the right (or left hand for the awesome Apple users icon_wink.gif hand corner and move around it.

Like someone before me said- it was a cute story meant for the cat lovers....Not the cat haters. thumbsdown.gif
