I tried dying some fondant black, used 2 1/2 Wilton sized bottles of food color and its still a very dark shade of green. I would add more food color, but the fondant is already too soft as it is. I'm trying to finish this cake either tonight or tomorrow morning, so any last minute advice is greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Let the color sit on/in the fondant for a while. The color will deepen as it sits.

Also you can mix some paste with a little bit of alchohol and make a a think paint and paint your finished fondant.

i know that this is too late for you now but i don't even try to make black (or red for that matter) fondant. i buy it premade from satin ice. it's worth it to me to not have to knead it all together till my arms feel like they're going to fall off to get the color i want.

If you can use chocolate , then just add a small amount of black coloring to the chocolate fondant and it makes a great black. I agree on the purchase of the Black fondant from SatinIce for future jobs.

For next time -- I recently made this recipe from here -- worked like a charm - and it's good.

Thanks for all the advice! What I ended up doing is adding a small amount of tylose powder and then another bottle of food color. It worked out really well. Hope to get a good picture and post it on the site when it's done.

I've found it is generally easier to dispense with coloring fondant black or red altogether and just airbrush it instead. Of course, this is best if the cake is to be entirely red or black. This solves many problems like softening due to adding large amounts of liquid or paste color and I've found results in truer color. You can buy pre-colored fondant, but who wants to eat a chunk of red fondant anyway? Lol.
