I am pretty sure they use vodka or extract and metallic lustre dust and paint the silver on fondant. Don't have a picture sorry, but i am sure someone will and maybe have more info than I. Good Luck!

I would probably airbrush it and then use NuSilver lustre dust.

I don't have an airbrush... is this way too much to paint by hand?!

I think it will go faster than you think. I hand painted a 10" tall 6" round cake (Ratatouille cake in my gallery) with copper luster dust dissolved in Everclear, it really wasn't as bad as I'd expected. Mind you for a wedding cake you'd be doing a much more careful job than the cake I did for my 3yo daugter LOL. But the point is if you wet-paint it (rather than trying to dry dust it) it won't be as bad as you think w/regard to the amount of time and dust it takes. If you can get your hands on Everclear I highly recommend it for the job. It would also help if you tint the fondant a light grey first, but you will surely need to end up doing 2-3 coats anyway to get proper coverage.

eta: I just remembered seeing this great cake from MacsMom, it's a 2-tier all gold cake that she indeed painted on http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1232766 HTH

Cake for 100! I wouldn't think so. Metallic lustre dust isn't cheap, but I don't know how much it would take to paint it on.
Milissasmom-do you mean airbrush w/ lustre dust. You said airbrush and THEN use lustre dust. Not sure I understand. I don't haven't done much airbrushing so just curious.

I responded to your other post.

Other CCr's. I found this. It's airbrush color. Do you think you can "paint" with it?
http://www.countrykitchensa.com/catalog/product.aspx?T=1&ShopId=38&CatId=596&SubCatId=149&productId=631910

Cheaper here:

You might call & ask. It's not cheap, but it could save time mixing & trying to get the same consistancy. It wouldn't hurt to find out.

OK
What you have to do is color the fondant in grey color and cover the cake than you can use the Lucks silver airbrush paint. I have done this many times and it works great.

If you don't have an airbrush use grey fondant and hand paint it with Luster Dust. but you may have to paint it a couple of times.

You can also use Lucks silver airbrush paint and use it with a brush, I also do that many times when I don't have to paint the whole cake. If you are going to use the Lucks paint with a brush practice first because this paint can't be use too thick or you can't do too many strokes with the brush.

Good luck and let me know if you need any more help.

Wendy

I don't have an airbrush machine either, but I've seen spray can type things of metallic luster paint. That'll probably be best try bakedeco.com

I did a search on the can of spray luster paint and I can't find silver. They have gold, pearl blue, green...no silver! You would think they would have it but I can't find it anywhere. I guess I am stuck hand painting - if they go through with the order!

in my ck catelog it says that many of these dust are not to be eaten. How do you use them on the cake and not have people eat. Do you remove the fondant? I have been very reluctant to try since I have read this disclaimer in the catelog.

I was wondering that as well, though I've seen entire tiers painted silver. Maybe the Highlighter dust is not to be eaten, but the lustre dust is? Can anyone clarify?
Thanks!

Last year I made a promotion cake for an Army Captain and made the Cpt's bars and painted it with silver lustre dust I got with my handy dandy Michael's coupons. It was a pretty big cake but what I did was put the crappy Wilton fondant on it (I was just starting out and didn't know better) and then painted the white fondant with the lustre dust/everclear mixture. It took a long time because I was using the Wilton paint brush but it did turn out well. All the people in my husband's class ate it and no one got sick. HTH

Where can you get an airbrushing machine cheap not $200 plus dollars mayeb $40 or so???? I currently ise the spray cans but they get to be expensive with multiple colors. They work good but I'd rather just buy the airbrush colors than the spray.

I made a cake with silver on it. Like Wendy said, I colored the fondant a light gray. I didn't have an airbrush so I painted it on with a large paintbrush. I used nu silver luster dust and mixed in some super pearl to get a nice silver color. I used Wilton's clear vanilla to paint it on and applied another coat after that dried. It didn't take as much luster dust as I thought it would. I get my luster dust from http://paylesscakedecor.com/lusterdust1.htm pretty cheap.

eh... new website - Payless cake decor! thanks for that one- hadn't heard of it before!

What is the difference between petal dust, luster dust, highlighter dust anyway.

Petal dust is a flat color like chalk. Great for gumpaste flowers. Lust dust is the pretty shiny stuff most used on cakes, and highlighter is the really shiny stuff that looks almost like metal. although I'm not sure about using that one on parts of the cake that will be eaten. I've heard different views on whether or not highlighter dust is edible.

Thanks - I know the website had a warning on the highlighter dust that it was not edible, non-toxic, but not technically edible because there are metal particals.

I would cover the cake in grey fondant first and then airbrush it or use PME Silver spray to cover. You may have to do a few coats.Should look really nice!!!

I would airbrush in silver, at least for a base of color. If you topped it off with brush strokes of luster dust, silver dust mixed with extract or wahtever, that would give you a painted look, but the airbrush should cut down on your time. PAINTING that whole cake from white will be a bear, I would think!! Good luck!

Just a little tidbit I learned from someone who works at Bakery Crafts...theirluster airbrush colors and glazes are FDA approved to be consumed!!

HTH with everyone's decisions on these!
