Using A Template To Cut?

This may sound like a dumb question but.... how do you use a template to cut out a cookie? Do I just cut around the edge with a knife? Won't the edges be rough?

I was asked to make teenage mutant ninja turtle cookies but they don't have a cutter. I told the customer I could use a picture as a template and cut the cookies that way but I don't know how icon_redface.gif

I saw a pic of just their head and was going to use that with the different colored head band thing-y. Help please! icon_biggrin.gif

I have only done this a couple of times, I took the picture, blew it up to the size I wanted, cut it out, then traced it on to a piece of cardboard. Then I cut the cardboard out. I put the cardboard on the cookie dough, and cut it out with an exato knife. I have also used quilters plastic and traced the outline on that.

There is a thread on here about this. I don't remember who wrote it though. I do know she does fantastic cookies.

What i do, is trace your template on to a plastic/rubber placemat and cut it out of that. That way it is sturdier and easier to follow with your X-acto, and then you can just wipe it off and save it so you can use it over again if needed/wanted. HTH!

You'll find that you have rough edges but they smooth nicely with just your finger tip. You just don't want to have to make too many this way. It can be a pain in the neck

I do this technique on so many of my cookies and I find that using template plastic (picked up from Joann's) works well. The trick is to make sure that your dough is very well chilled. That will help with the jagged edge issue, which as mentioned can be fixed by lightly touching it with your finger. Have fun!

I use this template technique all the time and love the unlimited possibilities it offers. You HAVE to chill your rolled out dough or you will get the jagged edge. Roll my dough out on parchment, slide a cookie sheet under it then pop it in the freezer while my oven in preheating. When it is set up enough I cut my shape out and it is easy peasy!

Make sure the dough is very chilled and use a very sharp knife-that helps to cut down on the rough edges.
