I just opened my first vanilla Satin Ice and it smells like playdough. Kind of tastes like it too-should it?

NO it doesn't usually smell like playdough, it has a vanilla smell to it. Can you get someone near you to give it a sniff someone that knows what it should smell like and taste like as taste and smell is very subjective and you can't really get that advice over the net.

Can you contact where you purchased the fondant? It sounds like it might be old.

I just bought it within the last couple of months. I will take it back to the store and see what they say. I really hate the taste of it.

I know that the two cake shops here in Dallas that I go to have stopped selling the white satin ice. They have had issues of it drying out from what I hear. Sounds like there might be something else going on.... I would take it back... try fondx if they have it.

They tell me they have had no problems with the chocolate.

I just bought my first ever 5lbs bucket of Satin Ice over the weekend. When I opened it there was a hair init(actually looked like an eyebrow or eye lash). The bucket was still factory sealed and aw it through the protective wrapping. I was so dissapointed.

ewww, They are very nice at our local cake supply store, so hopefully I wont have a problem. And I hope my next batch is good.

It has been hot here and our air conditioner wasn't really doing it's job. I have been having such a time trying to get some flowers made. I have tried all sorts of combinations of candy clay, chocolate fondant, Michelle Foster's fondant, Satin Ice, gum paste....I was just hoping that a commercially made fondant would work for me.

I think I will contact Satin Ice. Not looking for any refunds its just so they know. As I said it was still sealed and in it's protective wrapper. I will still use it to practice and get the feel for Satin Ice.

Well my cake supply shop said that it was supposed to smell and taste like playdough.

She said to put it into another container with some cotton balls soaked in whatever fragrance/smell I wanted it to be and seal it up and it should take on that odor/smell.

I wont buy it again. I thought I had remembered it getting good reviews here and on other sites.

i use satin ice, granted i don't use it often, but it has never smelled like playdough to me.

Yeah, I just don't think it should smell or taste like that. I will try their suggestion of putting vanilla soaked cotton balls in with it. They said all of the Satin Ice they have is like that so no refunds.

I was tempted to buy a small bucket of another vanilla one (but colored) to see if that was the case, but figured if it tasted ok the reason would be that although its the same flavor the coloring would have something to do with it.

I just had my daughter and her boyfriend smell and taste it, (without telling them what I think about it), and they both said that it smelled and tasted like sugared playdough. My dd boyfriend says it tastes weird.

I will just end up using it for things that wont be eaten.

Help!! What is the best tasting fondant? I heard too that satin ice was the best tasting so I just ordered some. I haven't gotten it yet, so I guess we'll see how it taste. Wilton precolored fondant taste horrible.

I ordered some white vanilla Satin Ice fondant on-line a couple of months ago and couldn't wait to try it. When I first opened the package it smelled wonderful and tasted okay, not wonderful but better than Wilton.

I made a few pearls with it, rolled them in p earl dust, and put them in Tupperware so they would stay soft. When I opened the lid a couple of days later the pearls smelled "chemical-y", not "vanilla-y"at all.

The original bucket of fondant still smells okay (just don't want to eat it anymore!), and it's possible that the chemical smell was from the p earl dust, but I am plan on using candy clay for edible things from now on. I will use the Satin Ice for figures that can air dry hard and won't be consumed.

Gotta say, I was a little disappointed. The fondant is a lot easier to work with than candy clay and I had read such great things about it... Oh well, JMHO.
