I second this...and I just did this on Sunday for the ballerina birthday cake I made for my Aunt's 70th b'day. It was a lot of work, but it really made it pop!
If you just want a 'golden' yellow color, just color the icing w/a gel/powder. But if you want a lustrous metallic, leannsloan nailed it - pipe, dry and paint w/the luster dust. It's tedious, but it is an awesome result. If you want a bright gold, golden charm and if you want a little more depth - old gold is great.
Good luck!

Ditto on the Americolor Gold. It's fabulous!!
That's good to know about the Americolor - haven't really dabbled w/them yet. Thanks for sharing!

Indydebi, I tried that recipe for making silver this past week and it was awesome! I printed the recipe out a long time ago and never tried it until friday and I love it, Can't wait to try it with gold.
I have a cake next week for a Red Egg & Ginger party. The mom wants gold swirls & red gumpaste flowers. Would I be better off just painting the swirls & lines or piping the gold on? I have never worked with gold or silver before other than to dust with. Thanks in advance.
