This is cracking me up! I absolutely HATE the fountain, stairs, butter cream swags cakes! I'm angry with wilton for keeping those pictures on their websites! I've had two brides bring me the the exact same horrendous wilton picture this summer. icon_cry.gif I want to say , "go look at some pics made this decade!" I had one bride tell that she knows fountain are out of style but she's always wanted one. Well, can't fault her for that! At least she knows! thumbs_up.gif

I really don't like the fountains or stairs either, but I was getting a little concerned about the issues some of you have with basketweave and was wondering if I'm the only one that actually likes it. So, after reading 9 pages of this thread, I did a search and there are 29 pages of cakes with basketweave on this site. When basketweave is done properly and neatly I always thought it added to some cakes.
Please tell me I'm not the only one that likes basketweave!! icon_lol.gif

It was 1991. I think I was 12 (Okay...21...BARELY).

Notice the beautiful puffed sleeves. I thought I was a princess.

17 years later, the cake has been eaten, the waistline has been extended, we have four kids and still are happily married!!!

Amy, it looks beautiful, though. I love the ribbon with the tulips. You look beautiful, too. Those bridesmaids dresses are actually attractive -- what were you thinking?!? Aren't you supposed to torture your bridesmaids?

I LUV basketweave! I push it and promote it and do it a LOT!! Part of my selling point is "A lot of places charge extra because they think it's more work and I can't figure out why they say that. I don't charge extra because I find it very easy to do!"

OMG MY cake has tuk-n-ruffle too!!! icon_biggrin.gif

I didn't even pick it out...my MIL offerred to buy it and I told her to just pick it; that I liked her taste. And I DID...I loved the cake! It was YUM-O, too.

As a side note, don't mean to put anyone down as we are all laughing at the styles. I think it takes alot of talent to do those large cakes!!!

I had a fountain 10 years ago ... I just looked at my cake and I still love it! It was huge.... I will try and scan it soon! We unfortunately had a LOUSY photographer who didn't really get a good picture of it!

Whew!! I was always afraid of saying this.... But I hate fountains and stairs too!

Although, in their time, they were cool and I loved them and always wanted one for my own cake but now...NO WAY!!!! I'd rather have no cake than have a fountain cake.

My friend who got married last year had one because her fiance wanted a fountain. Seriously, we have to update those still living in the 80s and 90s. I didn't dare breathe that I hate fountain cakes. However, her cake did turn out very nice even with the fountain. icon_wink.gif

I just went to a wedding where the groom's mother made the cake. She did a pretty good job, having been out of practice since the 80's. But they did the whole foutain/stairs & satellite cakes look. You'd think it was bad enough BUT...they dyed the water in the fountain blood red. Everyone asked if it was a wedding or a massacre.

OK. I feel better now. Just didn't want to be out on a limb all by myself!! icon_lol.gif

PLUS I had an order for a birthday cake last week and they gave me complete design freedom for decorations and colors. So I did basketweave (pink and white) on the side with a "wreath" of Red, Pink and Yellow Roses around the top edges of the cake. It was one of the few cakes that I did that I was actually pleased with. thumbs_up.gif

"Fountain Goes Goth"

Is that not an attempt to bridge the generations? icon_biggrin.gif

I am so enjoying this thread! The pictures, the stories, the confessions ..... ! It's great!

Lisa....cheesy cake, but beautiful bride!!! Ah, I remember those plastic bells so well! I used to buy 'em by the boxful! icon_lol.gif

(And I STILL like cakes elevated on fountains! icon_redface.gif But I will conceed that the clear acrylic stand looks MUCH better than the plastic white one!)

Heehee...I have a large bow on my butt, too!!! It dwarfed my bum then, but now my bum would dwarf the bow!!!

Add me for another basketweave lover. I love it best with the basketweave tip for the horizontal stripes and a round tip for the vertical. Don't like it with the shell tip...

I have to say that if i am going to use any of the add ons, previously mentioned, I would use the acylic parts. I think that they look so much better. I think that basketweave is still nice. I have to say i have a thing of the ruffle that you put undercakes thinking i would use it. I purchased it about 3 yrs ago and it is still in its orig. package. LOL icon_lol.gif

I <3 this thread. Thank you ladies for sharing your stories and pictures. icon_lol.gif

Many of them look like my parents' wedding pics. My dad and his posse had the two-toned brown suits also. Just add on huge afros.

With all of the 80s stuff coming back lately, I'm glad these things aren't.

Here's the perfect book to accompany the little-people-throwing-themselves-in-a-blood-red-fountain cakes:

Of course, there are indeed tasteful fountain cakes...the blue one posted on this thread is quite lovely!

The frosting was just divine & never tasted any like it since. Yes, the cake has sugar bells & sugar cherubs along with God knows what other embellishments. I honestly didn't care what the cake looked like as taste was more important to me. That fact can be proven by the topper as it looked nothing like my husband or me. Will admit that 41 years later we both still talk about how great that cake tasted & remember little else about it. Sorry the image isn't better but time takes it toll on those antique photos! icon_wink.gif

Haha! I gave my SIL a similar book when I asked her to be a bridesmaid. icon_biggrin.gif
Yeah, the blood-red fountain was a little scary, especially being the Wilton plastic one.

Hey, I'm a die-hard basketweave lover too, I find it very easy to do and it just adds to the cakes, especially when you have lots of flowers.
